गहेउ चरन गहि भूमि पछारा। अति लाघवँ उठि पुनि तेहि मारा॥
पुनि आयउ प्रभु पहिं बलवाना। जयति जयति जय कृपानिधाना॥4॥
Kumbhkaran seized Sugriv’s foot and hurled him to the ground, but Sugriv swiftly rose and struck him back with remarkable agility. The mighty Sugriv then rushed to Lord Ram and cried out, “Victory, victory, all glory to the ocean of mercy, Shri Ram!”
उसने सुग्रीव का पैर पकड़कर उनको पृथ्वी पर पछाड़ दिया। फिर सुग्रीव ने बड़ी फुर्ती से उठकर उसको मारा और तब बलवान् सुग्रीव प्रभु के पास आए और बोले- कृपानिधान प्रभु की जय हो, जय हो, जय हो॥4॥
नाक कान काटे जियँ जानी। फिरा क्रोध करि भइ मन ग्लानी॥
सहज भीम पुनि बिनु श्रुति नासा। देखत कपि दल उपजी त्रासा॥5॥
Kumbhkaran was seized with remorse when he realized he had been deprived of his nose and ears, and in a rage he turned back toward the monkey army. Fierce by nature, he looked even more terrifying now without his nose and ears. The moment the monkey army saw him, fear arose in their ranks.
नाक-कान काटे गए, ऐसा मन में जानकर बड़ी ग्लानि हुई और वह क्रोध करके लौटा। एक तो वह स्वभाव (आकृति) से ही भयंकर था और फिर बिना नाक-कान का होने से और भी भयानक हो गया। उसे देखते ही वानरों की सेना में भय उत्पन्न हो गया॥5॥
* जय जय जय रघुबंस मनि धाए कपि दै हूह।
एकहि बार तासु पर छाड़ेन्हि गिरि तरु जूह॥66॥
Making loud hoo-hoo cries, the monkey troops shouted, “Victory, victory, victory to the crown of the Raghu clan, Shri Ram!” They then hurled mountains, rocks, and trees at Kumbhkaran all at once.
‘रघुवंशमणि की जय हो, जय हो’ ऐसा पुकारकर वानर हूह करके दौड़े और सबने एक ही साथ उस पर पहाड़ और वृक्षों के समूह छोड़े॥66॥
* कुंभकरन रन रंग बिरुद्धा। सन्मुख चला काल जनु क्रुद्धा॥
कोटि कोटि कपि धरि धरि खाई। जनु टीड़ी गिरि गुहाँ समाई॥1॥
Kumbhkaran, intoxicated by the lust for battle, advanced upon the enemy like the enraged God of Death, seizing millions of monkeys and devouring them in a single sweep, the sight resembling a swarm of locusts pouring into a mountain cave.
रण के उत्साह में कुंभकर्ण विरुद्ध होकर (उनके) सामने ऐसा चला मानो क्रोधित होकर काल ही आ रहा हो। वह करोड़-करोड़ वानरों को एक साथ पकड़कर खाने लगा! (वे उसके मुँह में इस तरह घुसने लगे) मानो पर्वत की गुफा में टिड्डियाँ समा रही हों॥1॥
कोटिन्ह गहि सरीर सन मर्दा। कोटिन्ह मीजि मिलव महि गर्दा॥
मुख नासा श्रवनन्हि कीं बाटा। निसरि पराहिं भालु कपि ठाटा॥2॥
He seized millions of monkeys, crushing them against his massive body, and millions more he ground between his palms, mixing them with the dust of the battlefield, while terrified hordes of monkeys and bears fled scrambling out of the openings of his nostrils, mouth, and ears.
करोड़ों (वानरों) को पकड़कर उसने शरीर से मसल डाला। करोड़ों को हाथों से मलकर पृथ्वी की धूल में मिला दिया। (पेट में गए हुए) भालू और वानरों के ठट्ट के ठट्ट उसके मुख, नाक और कानों की राह से निकल-निकलकर भाग रहे हैं॥2॥
रन मद मत्त निसाचर दर्पा। बिस्व ग्रसिहि जनु ऐहि बिधि अर्पा॥
मुरे सुभट सब फिरहिं न फेरे। सूझ न नयन सुनहिं नहिं टेरे॥3॥
The demon, inflamed by the thrill of battle, felt as though God Himself had offered him the entire world to devour. The brave warriors turned and fled, refusing to return to the fight even when commanded, for their eyes no longer dared to look back and their ears no longer heeded any call.
रण के मद में मत्त राक्षस कुंभकर्ण इस प्रकार गर्वित हुआ, मानो विधाता ने उसको सारा विश्व अर्पण कर दिया हो और उसे वह ग्रास कर जाएगा। सब योद्धा भाग खड़े हुए, वे लौटाए भी नहीं लौटते। आँखों से उन्हें सूझ नहीं पड़ता और पुकारने से सुनते नहीं!॥3॥
कुंभकरन कपि फौज बिडारी। सुनि धाई रजनीचर धारी॥
देखी राम बिकल कटकाई। रिपु अनीक नाना बिधि आई॥4॥
Hearing that Kumbhkaran had shattered the monkey army and driven them into fearful retreat, the demon forces surged forward. Shri Ram saw His troops distressed and noticed the enemy’s various battalions advancing from all sides.
कुंभकर्ण ने वानर सेना को तितर-बितर कर दिया। यह सुनकर राक्षस सेना भी दौड़ी। श्री रामचंद्रजी ने देखा कि अपनी सेना व्याकुल है और शत्रु की नाना प्रकार की सेना आ गई है॥4॥
* सुनु सुग्रीव बिभीषन अनुज सँभारेहु सैन।
मैं देखउँ खल बल दलहि बोले राजिवनैन॥67॥
The lotus-eyed Shri Ram said, “Listen, Sugriv, Vibhishan, and Lakshman, take care of the army while I go and test the strength and prowess of this wretch.”
तब कमलनयन श्री रामजी बोले- हे सुग्रीव! हे विभीषण! और हे लक्ष्मण! सुनो, तुम सेना को संभालना। मैं इस दुष्ट के बल और सेना को देखता हूँ॥67॥
* कर सारंग साजि कटि भाथा। अरि दल दलन चले रघुनाथा॥
प्रथम कीन्हि प्रभु धनुष टंकोरा। रिपु दल बधिर भयउ सुनि सोरा॥1॥
Adorning the Sharang bow in His hands and fastening the quiver at His waist, Shri Raghunath advanced to crush the enemy, and as He first twanged His bow, the sound alone struck the opposing platoons deaf.
हाथ में शार्गंधनुष और कमर में तरकस सजाकर श्री रघुनाथजी शत्रु सेना को दलन करने चले। प्रभु ने पहले तो धनुष का टंकार किया, जिसकी भयानक आवाज सुनते ही शत्रु दल बहरा हो गया॥1॥
सत्यसंध छाँड़े सर लच्छा। कालसर्प जनु चले सपच्छा॥
जहँ तहँ चले बिपुल नाराचा। लगे कटन भट बिकट पिसाचा॥2॥
The Lord, whose every word is grounded in truth, released one hundred thousand arrows that sped forth like black cobras, and countless iron shafts swept across the battlefield in all directions, cutting down the formidable demon warriors.
फिर सत्यप्रतिज्ञ श्री रामजी ने एक लाख बाण छोड़े। वे ऐसे चले मानो पंखवाले काल सर्प चले हों। जहाँ-तहाँ बहुत से बाण चले, जिनसे भयंकर राक्षस योद्धा कटने लगे॥2॥
कटहिं चरन उर सिर भुजदंडा। बहुतक बीर होहिं सत खंडा॥
घुर्मि घुर्मि घायल महि परहीं। उठि संभारि सुभट पुनि लरहीं॥3॥
Whirling round and round, the wounded warriors fell to the ground, while some valiant champions rose again and, regaining their composure, re-entered the battle.
उनके चरण, छाती, सिर और भुजदण्ड कट रहे हैं। बहुत से वीरों के सौ-सौ टुकड़े हो जाते हैं। घायल चक्कर खा-खाकर पृथ्वी पर पड़ रहे हैं। उत्तम योद्धा फिर संभलकर उठते और लड़ते हैं॥3॥
लागत बान जलद जिमि गाजहिं। बहुतक देखि कठिन सर भाजहिं॥
रुंड प्रचंड मुंड बिनु धावहिं। धरु धरु मारु मारु धुनि गावहिं॥4॥
They roared like thunderclouds as the arrows struck them, while many fled at the mere sight of those fearsome shafts, and formidable headless bodies raced across the battlefield shouting, “Seize, seize, kill, kill.”
बाण लगते ही वे मेघ की तरह गरजते हैं। बहुत से तो कठिन बाणों को देखकर ही भाग जाते हैं। बिना मुण्ड (सिर) के प्रचण्ड रुण्ड (धड़) दौड़ रहे हैं और ‘पकड़ो, पकड़ो, मारो, मारो’ का शब्द करते हुए गा (चिल्ला) रहे हैं॥4॥
* छन महुँ प्रभु के सायकन्हि काटे बिकट पिसाच।
पुनि रघुबीर निषंग महुँ प्रबिसे सब नाराच॥68॥
Within moments, the Lord’s arrows annihilated the formidable demon army, and then each of those arrows returned on its own to Shri Raghuveer’s quiver.
प्रभु के बाणों ने क्षण मात्र में भयानक राक्षसों को काटकर रख दिया। फिर वे सब बाण लौटकर श्री रघुनाथजी के तरकस में घुस गए॥68॥
* कुंभकरन मन दीख बिचारी। हति छन माझ निसाचर धारी॥
भा अति क्रुद्ध महाबल बीरा। कियो मृगनायक नाद गँभीरा॥1॥
When Kumbhkaran understood in his heart that Shri Ram had wiped out the demon army in an instant, the mighty and valorous demon was seized with intense fury and roared loudly like a lion, the King of beasts.
कुंभकर्ण ने मन में विचार कर देखा कि श्री रामजी ने क्षण मात्र में राक्षसी सेना का संहार कर डाला। तब वह महाबली वीर अत्यंत क्रोधित हुआ और उसने गंभीर सिंहनाद किया॥1॥
कोपि महीधर लेइ उपारी। डारइ जहँ मर्कट भट भारी॥
आवत देखि सैल प्रभु भारे। सरन्हि काटि रज सम करि डारे॥2॥
In a fit of fury, he uprooted mountains and hurled them wherever he spotted any brave monkey warriors. Seeing the massive peaks flying toward them, Lord Ram reduced them to dust with His arrows.
वह क्रोध करके पर्वत उखाड़ लेता है और जहाँ भारी-भारी वानर योद्धा होते हैं, वहाँ डाल देता है। बड़े-बड़े पर्वतों को आते देखकर प्रभु ने उनको बाणों से काटकर धूल के समान (चूर-चूर) कर डाला॥2॥
पुनि धनु तानि कोपि रघुनायक। छाँड़े अति कराल बहु सायक॥
तनु महुँ प्रबिसि निसरि सर जाहीं। जिमि दामिनि घन माझ समाहीं॥3॥
Then, aiming His bow in fury, Lord Raghunayak released countless fiercely powerful arrows at Kumbhkaran, and they entered and passed through his body like flashes of lightning piercing a dark thundercloud.
फिर श्री रघुनाथजी ने क्रोध करके धनुष को तानकर बहुत से अत्यंत भयानक बाण छोड़े। वे बाण कुंभकर्ण के शरीर में घुसकर (पीछे से इस प्रकार) निकल जाते हैं (कि उनका पता नहीं चलता), जैसे बिजलियाँ बादल में समा जाती हैं॥3॥
सोनित स्रवत सोह तन कारे। जनु कज्जल गिरि गेरु पनारे॥
बिकल बिलोकि भालु कपि धाए। बिहँसा जबहिं निकट कपि आए॥4॥
The blood gushing from his dark body appeared like streams of red ochre flowing down a mountain of kohl. Seeing Kumbhkaran appearing weakened and uneasy, the monkey and bear warriors surged forward, but the giant only laughed loudly as they approached.
उसके काले शरीर से रुधिर बहता हुआ ऐसे शोभा देता है, मानो काजल के पर्वत से गेरु के पनाले बह रहे हों। उसे व्याकुल देखकर रीछ वानर दौड़े। वे ज्यों ही निकट आए, त्यों ही वह हँसा,॥4॥
* महानाद करि गर्जा कोटि कोटि गहि कीस।
महि पटकइ गजराज इव सपथ करइ दससीस॥69॥
Roaring fiercely, Kumbhkaran seized millions of monkey warriors in his hands each time and smashed them against the ground like a rampaging elephant, all the while shouting, “Victory to the ten-headed Ravan!”
और बड़ा घोर शब्द करके गरजा तथा करोड़-करोड़ वानरों को पकड़कर वह गजराज की तरह उन्हें पृथ्वी पर पटकने लगा और रावण की दुहाई देने लगा॥69॥
* भागे भालु बलीमुख जूथा। बृकु बिलोकि जिमि मेष बरूथा॥
चले भागि कपि भालु भवानी। बिकल पुकारत आरत बानी॥1॥
The bears and monkey troops fled like a flock of sheep at the sight of a wolf. Lord Shiv said to Goddess Parvati, “O’ Bhawani, the monkeys and bears scattered in terror, crying out in distress as they ran for their lives.”
यह देखकर रीछ-वानरों के झुंड ऐसे भागे जैसे भेड़िये को देखकर भेड़ों के झुंड! (शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे भवानी! वानर-भालू व्याकुल होकर आर्तवाणी से पुकारते हुए भाग चले॥1॥
यह निसिचर दुकाल सम अहई। कपिकुल देस परन अब चहई॥
कृपा बारिधर राम खरारी। पाहि पाहि प्रनतारति हारी॥2॥
They cried, “This demon is like a famine, determined to devastate the land in the form of the monkey race. Therefore, O’ Enemy of the Khar demon, Shri Ram, O’ Cloud laden with the water of compassion, O’ Reliever of the suppliant’s agony, save us, protect us.”
(वे कहने लगे-) यह राक्षस दुर्भिक्ष के समान है, जो अब वानर कुल रूपी देश में पड़ना चाहता है। हे कृपा रूपी जल के धारण करने वाले मेघ रूप श्री राम! हे खर के शत्रु! हे शरणागत के दुःख हरने वाले! रक्षा कीजिए, रक्षा कीजिए!॥2॥
सकरुन बचन सुनत भगवाना। चले सुधारि सरासन बाना॥
राम सेन निज पाछें घाली। चले सकोप महा बलसाली॥3॥
Hearing these pitiful cries, the Lord advanced, stringing His bow and readying an arrow in His hands, and the powerful Lord Ram placed His army behind Him as He moved forward in full fury.
करुणा भरे वचन सुनते ही भगवान् धनुष-बाण सुधारकर चले। महाबलशाली श्री रामजी ने सेना को अपने पीछे कर लिया और वे (अकेले) क्रोधपूर्वक चले (आगे बढ़े)॥3॥
खैंचि धनुष सर सत संधाने। छूटे तीर सरीर समाने॥
लागत सर धावा रिस भरा। कुधर डगमगत डोलति धरा॥4॥
Drawing back the bowstring, Shri Ram aimed and released a hundred arrows that vanished into the demon’s body, yet even as they struck him, he charged forward in a fury. The Earth quaked and the mountains shuddered as he ran.
उन्होंने धनुष को खींचकर सौ बाण संधान किए। बाण छूटे और उसके शरीर में समा गए। बाणों के लगते ही वह क्रोध में भरकर दौड़ा। उसके दौड़ने से पर्वत डगमगाने लगे और पृथ्वी हिलने लगी॥4॥
लीन्ह एक तेंहि सैल उपाटी। रघुकुलतिलक भुजा सोइ काटी॥
धावा बाम बाहु गिरि धारी। प्रभु सोउ भुजा काटि महि पारी॥5॥
Kumbhkaran then uprooted a massive mountain, but Shri Ram, the glory of the Raghu clan, severed the arms that held it, and when the demon grasped another peak with his left hand, the Lord struck that arm to the ground as well.
उसने एक पर्वत उखाड़ लिया। रघुकुल तिलक श्री रामजी ने उसकी वह भुजा ही काट दी। तब वह बाएँ हाथ में पर्वत को लेकर दौड़ा। प्रभु ने उसकी वह भुजा भी काटकर पृथ्वी पर गिरा दी॥5॥
काटें भुजा सोह खल कैसा। पच्छहीन मंदर गिरि जैसा॥
उग्र बिलोकनि प्रभुहि बिलोका। ग्रसन चहत मानहुँ त्रैलोका॥6॥
With his arms severed, the wretched demon looked like the Mandrachal mountain without its wings, and he cast such a fierce gaze upon the Lord as if he was prepared to devour all three spheres of the Cosmos (Earth, Heaven, and the Subterranean region).
भुजाओं के कट जाने पर वह दुष्ट कैसी शोभा पाने लगा, जैसे बिना पंख का मंदराचल पहाड़ हो। उसने उग्र दृष्टि से प्रभु को देखा। मानो तीनों लोकों को निगल जाना चाहता हो॥6॥
* करि चिक्कार घोर अति धावा बदनु पसारि।
गगन सिद्ध सुर त्रासित हा हा हेति पुकारि॥70॥
Kumbhkaran roared thunderously and charged toward Shri Ram with his mouth gaping wide, while the Demigods and realized Saints watching from the sky were seized with terror and cried out in fear.
वह बड़े जोर से चिग्घाड़ करके मुँह फैलाकर दौड़ा। आकाश में सिद्ध और देवता डरकर हा! हा! हा! इस प्रकार पुकारने लगे॥70॥
* सभय देव करुनानिधि जान्यो। श्रवन प्रजंत सरासुन तान्यो॥
बिसिख निकर निसिचर मुख भरेऊ। तदपि महाबल भूमि न परेऊ॥1॥
When the ocean of mercy, Shri Ram, saw the Demigods gripped with fear, He drew the bowstring up to His ear and sent a terrifying cluster of arrows piercing through the demon’s mouth, yet the immensely brave Kumbhkaran still did not fall.
करुणानिधान भगवान् ने देवताओं को भयभीत जाना। तब उन्होंने धनुष को कान तक तानकर राक्षस के मुख को बाणों के समूह से भर दिया। तो भी वह महाबली पृथ्वी पर न गिरा॥1॥
सरन्हि भरा मुख सन्मुख धावा। काल त्रोन सजीव जनु आवा॥
तब प्रभु कोपि तीब्र सर लीन्हा। धर ते भिन्न तासु सिर कीन्हा॥2॥
With his mouth stuffed with arrows, Kumbhkaran rushed forward, looking like a living quiver of Death itself. In anger, the Lord then took a formidable arrow and severed Kumbhkaran’s head from his body.
मुख में बाण भरे हुए वह (प्रभु के) सामने दौड़ा। मानो काल रूपी सजीव तरकस ही आ रहा हो। तब प्रभु ने क्रोध करके तीक्ष्ण बाण लिया और उसके सिर को धड़ से अलग कर दिया॥2॥
सो सिर परेउ दसानन आगें। बिकल भयउ जिमि फनि मनि त्यागें॥
धरनि धसइ धर धाव प्रचंडा। तब प्रभु काटि कीन्ह दुइ खंडा॥3॥
The severed head flew and fell before the ten-headed Ravan, who was overcome with anguish at the sight, like a serpent bereft of its crest jewel. The Earth groaned beneath the weight of Kumbhkaran’s massive body as it continued to surge forward, whereupon the Lord severed it into two parts with another arrow.
वह सिर रावण के आगे जा गिरा उसे देखकर रावण ऐसा व्याकुल हुआ जैसे मणि के छूट जाने पर सर्प। कुंभकर्ण का प्रचण्ड धड़ दौड़ा, जिससे पृथ्वी धँसी जाती थी। तब प्रभु ने काटकर उसके दो टुकड़े कर दिए॥3॥
परे भूमि जिमि नभ तें भूधर। हेठ दाबि कपि भालु निसाचर॥
तासु तेज प्रभु बदन समाना। सुर मुनि सबहिं अचंभव माना॥4॥
The two halves of Kumbhkaran’s body crashed to the ground like two immense mountains falling from the sky, crushing monkeys, bears, and demons beneath them, and the radiance of Kumbhkaran’s subtle body entered the Lord’s mouth (ending his cycle of birth and death); all the Demigods and Sages were astonished to witness this act of divine benevolence bestowed upon a demon.
वानर-भालू और निशाचरों को अपने नीचे दबाते हुए वे दोनों टुकड़े पृथ्वी पर ऐसे पड़े जैसे आकाश से दो पहाड़ गिरे हों। उसका तेज प्रभु श्री रामचंद्रजी के मुख में समा गया। (यह देखकर) देवता और मुनि सभी ने आश्चर्य माना॥4॥
सुर दुंदुभीं बजावहिं हरषहिं। अस्तुति करहिं सुमन बहु बरषहिं॥
करि बिनती सुर सकल सिधाए। तेही समय देवरिषि आए॥5॥
The Demigods rejoiced, sounded kettledrums, showered flowers from the sky, and praised the Lord, and after offering their prayers, they departed, and at that very moment the celestial Sage Narad arrived.
देवता नगाड़े बजाते, हर्षित होते और स्तुति करते हुए बहुत से फूल बरसा रहे हैं। विनती करके सब देवता चले गए। उसी समय देवर्षि नारद आए॥5॥
गगनोपरि हरि गुन गन गाए। रुचिर बीररस प्रभु मन भाए॥
बेगि हतहु खल कहि मुनि गए। राम समर महि सोभत भए॥6॥
Standing in mid-air, Narad ji sang the virtues of Lord Hari, Shri Ram, and the Lord was pleased in His heart to hear the warrior spirit with which Narad ji had portrayed Him. When the hymn concluded, Narad ji said, “Now quickly slay the wretched Ravan,” and departed. Shri Ram then advanced into the battlefield, where He shone with majestic splendour.
आकाश के ऊपर से उन्होंने श्री हरि के सुंदर वीर रसयुक्त गुण समूह का गान किया, जो प्रभु के मन को बहुत ही भाया। मुनि यह कहकर चले गए कि अब दुष्ट रावण को शीघ्र मारिए। (उस समय) श्री रामचंद्रजी रणभूमि में आकर (अत्यंत) सुशोभित हुए॥6॥
छंद :
* संग्राम भूमि बिराज रघुपति अतुल बल कोसल धनी।
श्रम बिंदु मुख राजीव लोचन अरुन तन सोनित कनी॥
भुज जुगल फेरत सर सरासन भालु कपि चहु दिसि बने।
कह दास तुलसी कहि न सक छबि सेष जेहि आनन घने॥
Shri Raghupati, the Lord of the Koshal Kingdom and supremely brave, stood resplendent on the battlefield; droplets of sweat adorned His charming face, His lotus eyes glowed slightly red, and specks of blood marked His divine form. With both hands He playfully caressed His bow and arrow as monkeys and bears gathered around Him, and Tulsidas ji declares that even Shesha ji, the thousand-mouthed Lord of Serpents, could not fully describe the splendour of the Lord as He appeared upon that battlefield.
अतुलनीय बल वाले कोसलपति श्री रघुनाथजी रणभूमि में सुशोभित हैं। मुख पर पसीने की बूँदें हैं, कमल समान नेत्र कुछ लाल हो रहे हैं। शरीर पर रक्त के कण हैं, दोनों हाथों से धनुष-बाण फिरा रहे हैं। चारों ओर रीछ-वानर सुशोभित हैं। तुलसीदासजी कहते हैं कि प्रभु की इस छबि का वर्णन शेषजी भी नहीं कर सकते, जिनके बहुत से (हजार) मुख हैं।
* निसिचर अधम मलाकर ताहि दीन्ह निज धाम।
गिरिजा ते नर मंदमति जे न भजहिं श्रीराम॥71॥
Lord Shiv said to Goddess Parvati, “O’ Girija, the demon was vile and filled with wicked qualities, yet Lord Ram granted him a place in His divine abode. Truly dull-witted are those who still do not worship Shri Ram.”
(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे गिरिजे! कुंभकर्ण, जो नीच राक्षस और पाप की खान था, उसे भी श्री रामजी ने अपना परमधाम दे दिया। अतः वे मनुष्य (निश्चय ही) मंदबुद्धि हैं, जो उन श्री रामजी को नहीं भजते॥71॥
*दिन के अंत फिरीं द्वौ अनी। समर भई सुभटन्ह श्रम घनी॥
राम कृपाँ कपि दल बल बाढ़ा। जिमि तृन पाइ लाग अति डाढ़ा॥1॥
At day’s end, both armies retired to their respective camps. The battle had been exceptionally exhausting for the brave warriors, yet by the grace of Shri Ram, the monkey army regained its strength, rising once more like a fire that flares up when fed with straw.
दिन का अन्त होने पर दोनों सेनाएँ लौट पड़ीं। (आज के युद्ध में) योद्धाओं को बड़ी थकावट हुई, परन्तु श्री रामजी की कृपा से वानर सेना का बल उसी प्रकार बढ़ गया, जैसे घास पाकर अग्नि बहुत बढ़ जाती है॥1॥
छीजहिं निसिचर दिनु अरु राती। निज मुख कहें सुकृत जेहि भाँती॥
बहु बिलाप दसकंधर करई। बंधु सीस पुनि पुनि उर धरई॥2॥
The demon troops were dwindling day by day, just as a person’s merit diminishes when he boasts of his own good deeds, and the ten-headed Ravan grieved bitterly, holding his brother’s head and pressing it again and again to his chest.
उधर राक्षस दिन-रात इस प्रकार घटते जा रहे हैं, जिस प्रकार अपने ही मुख से कहने पर पुण्य घट जाते हैं। रावण बहुत विलाप कर रहा है। बार-बार भाई (कुंभकर्ण) का सिर कलेजे से लगाता है॥2॥
रोवहिं नारि हृदय हति पानी। तासु तेज बल बिपुल बखानी॥
मेघनाद तेहि अवसर आयउ। कहि बहु कथा पिता समुझायउ॥3॥
Women in the palace wept and struck their chests, mourning as they praised Kumbhkaran’s extraordinary valour and immense strength. At that moment, Ravan’s son Meghnad arrived and consoled his father by recounting many legends.
स्त्रियाँ उसके बड़े भारी तेज और बल को बखान करके हाथों से छाती पीट-पीटकर रो रही हैं। उसी समय मेघनाद आया और उसने बहुत सी कथाएँ कहकर पिता को समझाया॥3॥
देखेहु कालि मोरि मनुसाई। अबहिं बहुत का करौं बड़ाई॥
इष्टदेव सैं बल रथ पायउँ। सो बल तात न तोहि देखायउँ॥4॥
Meghnad said, “Tomorrow you shall witness my prowess, for there is no purpose in boasting about it now. The divine chariot and the immense strength I once received from my revered deity are powers I have not yet revealed to you, dear father.”
(और कहा-) कल मेरा पुरुषार्थ देखिएगा। अभी बहुत बड़ाई क्या करूँ? हे तात! मैंने अपने इष्टदेव से जो बल और रथ पाया था, वह बल (और रथ) अब तक आपको नहीं दिखलाया था॥4॥
एहि बिधि जल्पत भयउ बिहाना। चहुँ दुआर लागे कपि नाना॥
इति कपि भालु काल सम बीरा। उत रजनीचर अति रनधीरा॥5॥
As he boasted in this way, dawn broke, and the monkey army once again surrounded all four gates of Lanka. On one side stood the monkeys and bears, fearsome as death, and on the other stood the demons, steadfast and formidable in battle.
इस प्रकार डींग मारते हुए सबेरा हो गया। लंका के चारों दरवाजों पर बहुत से वानर आ डटे। इधर काल के समान वीर वानर-भालू हैं और उधर अत्यंत रणधीर राक्षस॥5॥
लरहिं सुभट निज निज जय हेतू। बरनि न जाइ समर खगकेतू॥6॥
Kak Bhushundi ji told Garud ji, “O’ King of birds, every brave warrior fought for the triumph of his own side, and the battle rose to such ferocity that it defied all description.”
दोनों ओर के योद्धा अपनी-अपनी जय के लिए लड़ रहे हैं। हे गरुड़ उनके युद्ध का वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता॥6॥
* मेघनाद मायामय रथ चढ़ि गयउ अकास।
गर्जेउ अट्टहास करि भइ कपि कटकहि त्रास॥72॥
Meanwhile, Meghnad mounted his illusory chariot, rose into the sky, and let out a terrifying laugh that sent fear coursing through the monkey army.
मेघनाद उसी (पूर्वोक्त) मायामय रथ पर चढ़कर आकाश में चला गया और अट्टहास करके गरजा, जिससे वानरों की सेना में भय छा गया॥72॥
* सक्ति सूल तरवारि कृपाना। अस्त्र सस्त्र कुलिसायुध नाना॥
डारइ परसु परिघ पाषाना। लागेउ बृष्टि करै बहु बाना॥1॥
Meghnad unleashed a torrent of formidable weapons, spears, swords, scimitars, thunderbolts, and countless missiles, and poured down axes, iron clubs, and rocks, along with many spell-empowered arrows.
वह शक्ति, शूल, तलवार, कृपाण आदि अस्त्र, शास्त्र एवं वज्र आदि बहुत से आयुध चलाने तथा फरसे, परिघ, पत्थर आदि डालने और बहुत से बाणों की वृष्टि करने लगा॥1॥
दस दिसि रहे बान नभ छाई। मानहुँ मघा मेघ झरि लाई॥
धरु धरु मारु सुनिअ धुनि काना। जो मारइ तेहि कोउ न जाना॥2॥
Arrows filled the sky in all ten directions, as if clouds of Magh, (the star group in the Leo constellation), were pouring down in torrents. Cries of “Catch him, strike him” echoed on all sides, yet no one could see who was actually delivering the blows.
आकाश में दसों दिशाओं में बाण छा गए, मानो मघा नक्षत्र के बादलों ने झड़ी लगा दी हो। ‘पकड़ो, पकड़ो, मारो’ ये शब्द सुनाई पड़ते हैं। पर जो मार रहा है, उसे कोई नहीं जान पाता॥2॥
गहि गिरि तरु अकास कपि धावहिं। देखहिं तेहि न दुखित फिरि आवहिं॥
अवघट घाट बाट गिरि कंदर। माया बल कीन्हेसि सर पंजर॥3॥
Holding mountains and trees, the monkeys leapt into the sky but, unable to see Meghnad, returned in utter disappointment. Using his illusory powers, Meghnad thickly blanketed the rugged valleys, pathways, and mountain caves until they resembled cages made of arrows.
पर्वत और वृक्षों को लेकर वानर आकाश में दौड़कर जाते हैं। पर उसे देख नहीं पाते, इससे दुःखी होकर लौट आते हैं। मेघनाद ने माया के बल से अटपटी घाटियों, रास्तों और पर्वतों-कन्दराओं को बाणों के पिंजरे बना दिए (बाणों से छा दिया)॥3॥
जाहिं कहाँ ब्याकुल भए बंदर। सुरपति बंदि परे जनु मंदर॥
मारुतसुत अंगद नल नीला। कीन्हेसि बिकल सकल बलसीला॥4॥
The monkeys were bewildered and knew not where to turn, feeling helpless as though the Mandrachal mountains themselves had been imprisoned by Indra. Hanuman ji, the son of the Wind God, along with other mighty warriors such as Angad, Nal, and Neel, storehouses of strength and endurance, were utterly distressed.
अब कहाँ जाएँ, यह सोचकर (रास्ता न पाकर) वानर व्याकुल हो गए। मानो पर्वत इंद्र की कैद में पड़े हों। मेघनाद ने मारुति हनुमान्, अंगद, नल और नील आदि सभी बलवानों को व्याकुल कर दिया॥4॥
पुनि लछिमन सुग्रीव बिभीषन। सरन्हि मारि कीन्हेसि जर्जर तन॥
पुनि रघुपति सैं जूझै लागा। सर छाँड़इ होइ लागहिं नागा॥5॥
After that, Meghnad shot a fierce stream of arrows at Lakshman ji, Sugriv, and Vibhishan, wounding their bodies severely, then he charged toward Shri Raghupati, and the arrows he released transformed into serpents as they struck Shri Ram.
फिर उसने लक्ष्मणजी, सुग्रीव और विभीषण को बाणों से मारकर उनके शरीर को छलनी कर दिया। फिर वह श्री रघुनाथजी से लड़ने लगा। वह जो बाण छोड़ता है, वे साँप होकर लगते हैं॥5॥
ब्याल पास बस भए खरारी। स्वबस अनंत एक अबिकारी॥
नट इव कपट चरित कर नाना। सदा स्वतंत्र एक भगवाना॥6॥
The slayer of the demon Khar, Shri Ram, all-capable, independent, infinite, the One without a second and untouched by any defect, was enveloped by the serpents’ coils, and like a skillful juggler, the ever-free, sole Supreme Lord revealed yet another of His wondrous, playful acts.
जो स्वतंत्र, अनन्त, एक (अखंड) और निर्विकार हैं, वे खर के शत्रु श्री रामजी (लीला से) नागपाश के वश में हो गए (उससे बँध गए) श्री रामचंद्रजी सदा स्वतंत्र, एक, (अद्वितीय) भगवान् हैं। वे नट की तरह अनेकों प्रकार के दिखावटी चरित्र करते हैं॥6॥
रन सोभा लगि प्रभुहिं बँधायो। नागपास देवन्ह भय पायो॥7॥
For the splendour befitting the battlefield, the Lord allowed Himself to be bound by the serpent-noose, but this sight filled the Demigods with great fear.
रण की शोभा के लिए प्रभु ने अपने को नागपाश में बाँध लिया, किन्तु उससे देवताओं को बड़ा भय हुआ॥7॥
* गिरिजा जासु नाम जपि मुनि काटहिं भव पास।
सो कि बंध तर आवइ ब्यापक बिस्व निवास॥73॥
Lord Shiv said to Goddess Parvati, “O’ Girija, the very Lord whose name enables Sages to cut the endless bonds of worldly existence, can that omnipresent One, within whom the entire Cosmos resides, ever truly be caught in any snare?…
(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे गिरिजे! जिनका नाम जपकर मुनि भव (जन्म-मृत्यु) की फाँसी को काट डालते हैं, वे सर्वव्यापक और विश्व निवास (विश्व के आधार) प्रभु कहीं बंधन में आ सकते हैं?॥73॥
* चरित राम के सगुन भवानी। तर्कि न जाहिं बुद्धि बल बानी॥
अस बिचारि जे तग्य बिरागी। रामहि भजहिं तर्क सब त्यागी॥1॥
…O’ Bhawani, the exploits of Shri Ram in His human incarnation cannot be grasped by logic, reason, or speech. Understanding this within themselves, those who know the supreme truth and those who are truly detached, abandon all theological speculation and worship only Shri Ram.”
हे भवानी! श्री रामजी की इस सगुण लीलाओं के विषय में बुद्धि और वाणी के बल से तर्क (निर्णय) नहीं किया जा सकता। ऐसा विचार कर जो तत्त्वज्ञानी और विरक्त पुरुष हैं, वे सब तर्क (शंका) छोड़कर श्री रामजी का भजन ही करते हैं॥।1॥
ब्याकुल कटकु कीन्ह घननादा। पुनि भा प्रगट कहइ दुर्बादा॥
जामवंत कह खल रहु ठाढ़ा। सुनि करि ताहि क्रोध अति बाढ़ा॥2॥
Meghnad bewildered the entire monkey army and then finally revealed himself, hurling abuses, and Jambvant said, “O’ Vile one, remain standing for a while,” and hearing these words, Meghnad’s anger flared even more.
मेघनाद ने सेना को व्याकुल कर दिया। फिर वह प्रकट हो गया और दुर्वचन कहने लगा। इस पर जाम्बवान् ने कहा- अरे दुष्ट! खड़ा रह। यह सुनकर उसे बड़ा क्रोध बढ़ा॥2॥
