खल मनुजाद द्विजामिष भोगी। पावहिं गति जो जाचत जोगी॥
उमा राम मृदुचित करुनाकर। बयर भाव सुमिरत मोहि निसिचर॥2॥
The vile demons who once devoured Brahmins and lived as man-eaters thus attained a fate that even the most realized Saints long for. Lord Shiv said, “Uma, Lord Ram is exceedingly tender-hearted and a treasure of compassion, and He thought that even if the demons remembered Him with feelings of enmity, they still kept Him in their minds…
ब्राह्मणों का मांस खाने वाले वे नरभोजी दुष्ट राक्षस भी वह परम गति पाते हैं, जिसकी योगी भी याचना किया करते हैं, (परन्तु सहज में नहीं पाते)। (शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे उमा! श्री रामजी बड़े ही कोमल हृदय और करुणा की खान हैं। (वे सोचते हैं कि) राक्षस मुझे वैरभाव से ही सही, स्मरण तो करते ही हैं॥2॥
देहिं परम गति सो जियँ जानी। अस कृपाल को कहहु भवानी॥
अस प्रभु सुनि न भजहिं भ्रम त्यागी। नर मतिमंद ते परम अभागी॥3॥
…Thinking this way, Shri Ram granted them the highest state of liberation. Who can be as kind as Him, O’ Bhawani? If someone hears of such a Lord and still does not give up worldly infatuation to worship Shri Ram, there is no one more dull-witted or more unfortunate than that person.”
ऐसा हृदय में जानकर वे उन्हें परमगति (मोक्ष) देते हैं। हे भवानी! कहो तो ऐसे कृपालु (और) कौन हैं? प्रभु का ऐसा स्वभाव सुनकर भी जो मनुष्य भ्रम त्याग कर उनका भजन नहीं करते, वे अत्यंत मंदबुद्धि और परम भाग्यहीन हैं॥3॥
अंगद अरु हनुमंत प्रबेसा। कीन्ह दुर्ग अस कह अवधेसा॥
लंकाँ द्वौ कपि सोहहिं कैसें। मथहिं सिंधु दुइ मंदर जैसें॥4॥
The Lord of Ayodhya, Shri Ram, said, “Angad and Hanuman have entered the fort, and in their mighty rampage they shine like two Mandrachal mountains churning the ocean.”
श्री रामजी ने कहा कि अंगद और हनुमान किले में घुस गए हैं। दोनों वानर लंका में (विध्वंस करते) कैसे शोभा देते हैं, जैसे दो मन्दराचल समुद्र को मथ रहे हों॥4॥
* भुज बल रिपु दल दलमलि देखि दिवस कर अंत।
कूदे जुगल बिगत श्रम आए जहँ भगवंत॥45॥
With the strength of their arms, Angad and Hanuman ji crushed and battered the enemy troops. As the day drew to a close, the two leapt down from the fort with effortless ease and returned to where Lord Shri Ram was.
भुजाओं के बल से शत्रु की सेना को कुचलकर और मसलकर, फिर दिन का अंत होता देखकर हनुमान् और अंगद दोनों कूद पड़े और श्रम थकावट रहित होकर वहाँ आ गए, जहाँ भगवान् श्री रामजी थे॥45॥
* प्रभु पद कमल सीस तिन्ह नाए। देखि सुभट रघुपति मन भाए॥
राम कृपा करि जुगल निहारे। भए बिगतश्रम परम सुखारे॥1॥
They bowed their heads at the Lord’s lotus feet, and seeing the two warriors, Shri Raghupati felt great joy in His heart. Shri Ram cast a gracious glance upon them, and all their weariness vanished, leaving them filled with deep happiness.
उन्होंने प्रभु के चरण कमलों में सिर नवाए। उत्तम योद्धाओं को देखकर श्री रघुनाथजी मन में बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। श्री रामजी ने कृपा करके दोनों को देखा, जिससे वे श्रमरहित और परम सुखी हो गए॥1॥
गए जानि अंगद हनुमाना। फिरे भालु मर्कट भट नाना॥
जातुधान प्रदोष बल पाई। धाए करि दससीस ई॥2॥
Seeing that Angad and Hanuman ji had left the battlefield, many monkey warriors also began returning to their camp. Meanwhile, with dusk setting in, the demons regained strength and chased after the monkey army, shouting praises of the ten-headed Ravan’s victory.
अंगद और हनुमान् को गए जानकर सभी भालू और वानर वीर लौट पड़े। राक्षसों ने प्रदोष (सायं) काल का बल पाकर रावण की दुहाई देते हुए वानरों पर धावा किया॥2॥
निसिचर अनी देखि कपि फिरे। जहँ तहँ कटकटाइ भट भिरे॥
द्वौ दल प्रबल पचारि पचारी। लरत सुभट नहिं मानहिं हारी॥3॥
Seeing the demon army advancing, the monkeys turned back from all sides, letting out fierce, shrill noises through their teeth. Warriors from both sides clashed with full force. Each army was formidable, challenging the other with equal might, and no one was willing to accept defeat.
राक्षसों की सेना आती देखकर वानर लौट पड़े और वे योद्धा जहाँ-तहाँ कटकटाकर भिड़ गए। दोनों ही दल बड़े बलवान् हैं। योद्धा ललकार-ललकारकर ल़ड़ते हैं, कोई हार नहीं मानते॥3॥
महाबीर निसिचर सब कारे। नाना बरन बलीमुख भारे॥
सबल जुगल दल समबल जोधा। कौतुक करत लरत करि क्रोधा॥4॥
The demons were powerful warriors with dark complexions, while the monkeys were massive in size and appeared in many colours. Both armies were equally formidable, and their warriors matched one another in strength. Displaying their martial skill, they fought with intense fury.
सभी राक्षस महान् वीर और अत्यंत काले हैं और वानर विशालकाय तथा अनेकों रंगों के हैं। दोनों ही दल बलवान् हैं और समान बल वाले योद्धा हैं। वे क्रोध करके लड़ते हैं और खेल करते (वीरता दिखलाते) हैं॥4॥
प्राबिट सरद पयोद घनेरे। लरत मनहुँ मारुत के प्रेरे॥
अनिप अकंपन अरु अतिकाया। बिचलत सेन कीन्हि इन्ह माया॥5॥
It looked as though masses of rain clouds and autumn clouds were crashing into one another, driven by powerful winds. Seeing their armies lose ground, the demon commanders Akampan and Atikay unleashed their illusionary powers.
(राक्षस और वानर युद्ध करते हुए ऐसे जान पड़ते हैं) मानो क्रमशः वर्षा और शरद् ऋतु में बहुत से बादल पवन से प्रेरित होकर लड़ रहे हों। अकंपन और अतिकाय इन सेनापतियों ने अपनी सेना को विचलित होते देखकर माया की॥5॥
भयउ निमिष महँ अति अँधिआरा। बृष्टि होइ रुधिरोपल छारा॥6॥
Within moments, darkness covered everything, and blood, stones, and ashes began to rain down from the sky.
पलभर में अत्यंत अंधकार हो गया। खून, पत्थर और राख की वर्षा होने लगी॥6॥
* देखि निबिड़ तम दसहुँ दिसि कपिदल भयउ खभार।
एकहि एक न देखई जहँ तहँ करहिं पुकार॥46॥
Seeing thick darkness spread in all directions, the monkey army became anxious. It was so dark that they could not even see one another, and cries of fear rose from every side.
दसों दिशाओं में अत्यंत घना अंधकार देखकर वानरों की सेना में खलबली पड़ गई। एक को एक (दूसरा) नहीं देख सकता और सब जहाँ-तहाँ पुकार रहे हैं॥46॥
* सकल मरमु रघुनायक जाना। लिए बोलि अंगद हनुमाना॥
समाचार सब कहि समुझाए। सुनत कोपि कपिकुंजर धाए॥1॥
Lord Raghunayak understood the demons’ ploy and summoned Angad and Hanuman ji. He explained that the demon commanders had created this scene through sorcery and gave them His instructions. Hearing this, the two elephants among monkeys rushed to aid their army.
श्री रघुनाथजी सब रहस्य जान गए। उन्होंने अंगद और हनुमान् को बुला लिया और सब समाचार कहकर समझाया। सुनते ही वे दोनों कपिश्रेष्ठ क्रोध करके दौड़े॥1॥
पुनि कृपाल हँसि चाप चढ़ावा। पावक सायक सपदि चलावा॥
भयउ प्रकास कतहुँ तम नाहीं। ग्यान उदयँ जिमि संसय जाहीं॥2॥
Then the merciful Lord laughed and swiftly strung His bow, releasing a fire arrow. At once, brightness spread everywhere, and not a trace of darkness remained, just as, when the light of wisdom arises, every doubt is dispelled.
फिर कृपालु श्री रामजी ने हँसकर धनुष चलाया और तुरंत ही अग्निबाण चलाया, जिससे प्रकाश हो गया, कहीं अँधेरा नहीं रह गया। जैसे ज्ञान के उदय होने पर (सब प्रकार के) संदेह दूर हो जाते हैं॥2॥
भालु बलीमुख पाई प्रकासा। धाए हरष बिगत श्रम त्रासा॥
हनूमान अंगद रन गाजे। हाँक सुनत रजनीचर भाजे॥3॥
Seeing the brightness, the monkeys and bears ran forward in joy, and all their fatigue disappeared. Hanuman ji and Angad thundered across the battlefield, and at the sound of their mighty roars, the demons fled.
भालू और वानर प्रकाश पाकर श्रम और भय से रहित तथा प्रसन्न होकर दौड़े। हनुमान् और अंगद रण में गरज उठे। उनकी हाँक सुनते ही राक्षस भाग छूटे॥3॥
भागत भट पटकहिं धरि धरनी। करहिं भालु कपि अद्भुत करनी॥
गहि पद डारहिं सागर माहीं। मकर उरग झष धरि धरि खाहीं॥4॥
The monkeys and bears displayed their fierce strength and skill by grabbing the fleeing demon warriors and smashing them down. Then, holding them by their feet, they hurled them into the ocean, where crocodiles, serpents, and fish caught and devoured them.
भागते हुए राक्षस योद्धाओं को वानर और भालू पकड़कर पृथ्वी पर दे मारते हैं और अद्भुत (आश्चर्यजनक) करनी करते हैं (युद्धकौशल दिखलाते हैं)। पैर पकड़कर उन्हें समुद्र में डाल देते हैं। वहाँ मगर, साँप और मच्छ उन्हें पकड़-पकड़कर खा डालते हैं॥4॥
* कछु मारे कछु घायल कछु गढ़ चढ़े पराइ।
गर्जहिं भालु बलीमुख रिपु दल बल बिचलाइ॥47॥
Some demons were killed, others were wounded, and many fled by scrambling back onto the fort. With their immense strength, the monkeys and bears overpowered the demon army, driving them back and roaring loudly in triumph.
कुछ मारे गए, कुछ घायल हुए, कुछ भागकर गढ़ पर चढ़ गए। अपने बल से शत्रुदल को विचलित करके रीछ और वानर (वीर) गरज रहे हैं॥47॥
* निसा जानि कपि चारिउ अनी। आए जहाँ कोसला धनी॥
राम कृपा करि चितवा सबही। भए बिगतश्रम बानर तबही॥1॥
Knowing night had fallen, the four divisions of the army returned to where the Lord of Koshal was. Lord Ram cast a merciful glance upon them, and at once all the monkeys and bears were freed from their fatigue.
रात हुई जानकर वानरों की चारों सेनाएँ (टुकड़ियाँ) वहाँ आईं, जहाँ कोसलपति श्री रामजी थे। श्री रामजी ने ज्यों ही सबको कृपा करके देखा त्यों ही ये वानर श्रमरहित हो गए॥1॥
उहाँ दसानन सचिव हँकारे। सब सन कहेसि सुभट जे मारे॥
आधा कटकु कपिन्ह संघारा। कहहु बेगि का करिअ बिचारा॥2॥
In Lanka, the ten-headed Ravan called all his Ministers together. He informed them of the brave warriors who had been slain and said, “The monkeys have killed half of our army. Now tell me quickly, what plan should we undertake?”
वहाँ (लंका में) रावण ने मंत्रियों को बुलाया और जो योद्धा मारे गए थे, उन सबको सबसे बताया। (उसने कहा-) वानरों ने आधी सेना का संहार कर दिया! अब शीघ्र बताओ, क्या विचार (उपाय) करना चाहिए?॥2॥
माल्यवंत अति जरठ निसाचर। रावन मातु पिता मंत्री बर॥
बोला बचन नीति अति पावन। सुनहु तात कछु मोर सिखावन॥3॥

माल्यवंत (नाम का एक) अत्यंत बूढ़ा राक्षस था। वह रावण की माता का पिता (अर्थात् उसका नाना) और श्रेष्ठ मंत्री था। वह अत्यंत पवित्र नीति के वचन बोला- हे तात! कुछ मेरी सीख भी सुनो-॥3॥
जब ते तुम्ह सीता हरि आनी। असगुन होहिं न जाहिं बखानी॥
बेद पुरान जासु जसु गायो। राम बिमुख काहुँ न सुख पायो॥4॥

जब से तुम सीता को हर लाए हो, तब से इतने अपशकुन हो रहे हैं कि जो वर्णन नहीं किए जा सकते। वेद-पुराणों ने जिनका यश गाया है, उन श्री राम से विमुख होकर किसी ने सुख नहीं पाया॥4॥
* हिरन्याच्छ भ्राता सहित मधु कैटभ बलवान।
जेहिं मारे सोइ अवतरेउ कृपासिंधु भगवान॥48 क॥
…That same ocean of mercy, the Lord who slew Hiranyakashyapu and Hiranyaksha, and who destroyed the powerful demons Madhu and Kaitabha, has now descended as Lord Ram…
भाई हिरण्यकशिपु सहित हिरण्याक्ष को बलवान् मधु-कैटभ को जिन्होंने मारा था, वे ही कृपा के समुद्र भगवान् (रामरूप से) अवतरित हुए हैं॥ 48 क॥
कालरूप खल बन दहन गुनागार घनबोध।
सिव बिरंचि जेहि सेवहिं तासों कवन बिरोध॥48 ख॥
…the very embodiment of Death, a blazing fire that consumes sinners, a treasure of virtues, and a mine of wisdom. What purpose is served by opposing the One worshipped by Lord Shiv and Lord Brahma?…
जो कालस्वरूप हैं, दुष्टों के समूह रूपी वन के भस्म करने वाले (अग्नि) हैं, गुणों के धाम और ज्ञानघन हैं एवं शिवजी और ब्रह्माजी भी जिनकी सेवा करते हैं, उनसे वैर कैसा?॥48 ख॥
* परिहरि बयरु देहु बैदेही। भजहु कृपानिधि परम सनेही॥
ताके बचन बान सम लागे। करिआ मुँह करि जाहि अभागे॥1॥
…Therefore, give up this enmity, return Videhi ji to Him, and worship the mine of mercy, who is endlessly loving toward His devotees.” Malyavan’s words pierced Ravan like arrows, and Ravan shouted, “O’ Worthless one, blacken your face and get out of here…
(अतः) वैर छोड़कर उन्हें जानकीजी को दे दो और कृपानिधान परम स्नेही श्री रामजी का भजन करो। रावण को उसके वचन बाण के समान लगे। (वह बोला-) अरे अभागे! मुँह काला करके (यहाँ से) निकल जा॥1॥
बूढ़ भएसि न त मरतेउँ तोही। अब जनि नयन देखावसि मोही॥
तेहिं अपने मन अस अनुमाना। बध्यो चहत एहि कृपानिधाना॥2॥
…You have grown old, otherwise I would have killed you. Never show me your face again.” Hearing this, Malyavan reflected in his heart that the repository of mercy, Lord Ram, had surely decided to end Ravan’s life, for only then would Ravan ignore every wise counsel placed before him.
तू बूढ़ा हो गया, नहीं तो तुझे मार ही डालता। अब मेरी आँखों को अपना मुँह न दिखला। रावण के ये वचन सुनकर उसने (माल्यवान् ने) अपने मन में ऐसा अनुमान किया कि इसे कृपानिधान श्री रामजी अब मारना ही चाहते हैं॥2॥
सो उठि गयउ कहत दुर्बादा। तब सकोप बोलेउ घननादा॥
कौतुक प्रात देखिअहु मोरा। करिहउँ बहुत कहौं का थोरा॥3॥
Malyavan rose and left after speaking harsh words. Then, filled with anger, Meghnad declared, “Just wait until morning and witness my prowess. What is the use of describing a little? I will accomplish far more than I can even speak of.”
वह रावण को दुर्वचन कहता हुआ उठकर चला गया। तब मेघनाद क्रोधपूर्वक बोला- सबेरे मेरी करामात देखना। मैं बहुत कुछ करूँगा, थोड़ा क्या कहूँ? (जो कुछ वर्णन करूँगा थोड़ा ही होगा)॥3॥
सुनि सुत बचन भरोसा आवा। प्रीति समेत अंक बैठावा॥
करत बिचार भयउ भिनुसारा। लागे कपि पुनि चहूँ दुआरा॥4॥
Hearing his son’s words, Ravan felt reassured and affectionately seated Meghnad on his lap. As they discussed their plans, dawn broke, and the monkeys once again attacked the four gates of Lanka.
पुत्र के वचन सुनकर रावण को भरोसा आ गया। उसने प्रेम के साथ उसे गोद में बैठा लिया। विचार करते-करते ही सबेरा हो गया। वानर फिर चारों दरवाजों पर जा लगे॥4॥
कोपि कपिन्ह दुर्घट गढ़ु घेरा। नगर कोलाहलु भयउ घनेरा॥
बिबिधायुध धर निसिचर धाए। गढ़ ते पर्बत सिखर ढहाए॥5॥
In their fury, the monkey army laid siege to the mighty fort. A great outcry rose throughout the city of Lanka. The demons rushed out, carrying various weapons, and hurled mountain peaks from the top of the fort.
वानरों ने क्रोध करके दुर्गम किले को घेर लिया। नगर में बहुत ही कोलाहल (शोर) मच गया। राक्षस बहुत तरह के अस्त्र-शस्त्र धारण करके दौड़े और उन्होंने किले पर पहाड़ों के शिखर ढहाए॥5॥
छंद :
* ढाहे महीधर सिखर कोटिन्ह बिबिध बिधि गोला चले।
घहरात जिमि पबिपात गर्जत जनु प्रलय के बादले॥
मर्कट बिकट भट जुटत कटत न लटत तन जर्जर भए।
गहि सैल तेहि गढ़ पर चलावहि जहँ सो तहँ निसिचर हए॥
The demons hurled down millions of mountain peaks and all kinds of bombshells upon the monkey army. The bombs burst with thunderous force like lightning, while the battling warriors roared like clouds at the time of universal dissolution. The mighty monkey fighters clashed with the demons, and though severely wounded and badly battered, they did not retreat. Gripping rocks and mountain peaks, they hurled them at the fort, crushing and killing the demons wherever they stood.
उन्होंने पर्वतों के करोड़ों शिखर ढहाए, अनेक प्रकार से गोले चलने लगे। वे गोले ऐसा घहराते हैं जैसे वज्रपात हुआ हो (बिजली गिरी हो) और योद्धा ऐसे गरजते हैं, मानो प्रलयकाल के बादल हों। विकट वानर योद्धा भिड़ते हैं, कट जाते हैं (घायल हो जाते हैं), उनके शरीर जर्जर (चलनी) हो जाते हैं, तब भी वे लटते नहीं (हिम्मत नहीं हारते)। वे पहाड़ उठाकर उसे किले पर फेंकते हैं। राक्षस जहाँ के तहाँ (जो जहाँ होते हैं, वहीं) मारे जाते हैं।
* मेघनाद सुनि श्रवन अस गढ़ पुनि छेंका आइ।
उतर्यो बीर दुर्ग तें सन्मुख चल्यो बजाइ॥49॥
When Meghnad heard that the monkey army had once again surrounded the fort, the brave warrior descended and advanced at the beat of drums to confront the enemy face to face.
मेघनाद ने कानों से ऐसा सुना कि वानरों ने आकर फिर किले को घेर लिया है। तब वह वीर किले से उतरा और डंका बजाकर उनके सामने चला॥49॥
* कहँ कोसलाधीस द्वौ भ्राता। धन्वी सकल लोक बिख्याता॥
कहँ नल नील दुबिद सुग्रीवा। अंगद हनूमंत बल सींवा॥1॥
He shouted, “Where are the two Brothers, the Princes of the Koshal Kingdom, those famous archers renowned across all the Realms of creation? Where are Nal, Neel, Dvivid, Sugriv, and those limits of strength, Angad and Hanuman?…
(मेघनाद ने पुकारकर कहा-) समस्त लोकों में प्रसिद्ध धनुर्धर कोसलाधीश दोनों भाई कहाँ हैं? नल, नील, द्विविद, सुग्रीव और बल की सीमा अंगद और हनुमान् कहाँ हैं?॥1॥
कहाँ बिभीषनु भ्राताद्रोही। आजु सबहि हठि मारउँ ओही॥
अस कहि कठिन बान संधाने। अतिसय क्रोध श्रवन लगि ताने॥2॥
…Where is that Vibhishan who has betrayed his own brother? Today I will stubbornly strike down everyone, including that wicked traitor”. Saying this, he set a hard and piercing arrow to his bow and, filled with intense anger, drew it back all the way to his ear.
भाई से द्रोह करने वाला विभीषण कहाँ है? आज मैं सबको और उस दुष्ट को तो हठपूर्वक (अवश्य ही) मारूँगा। ऐसा कहकर उसने धनुष पर कठिन बाणों का सन्धान किया और अत्यंत क्रोध करके उसे कान तक खींचा॥2॥
सर समूह सो छाड़ै लागा। जनु सपच्छ धावहिं बहु नागा॥
जहँ तहँ परत देखिअहिं बानर। सन्मुख होइ न सके तेहि अवसर॥3॥
He began releasing volleys of arrows that flew like winged serpents. Monkeys fell to the ground in every direction, and at that moment no one dared to face him.
वह बाणों के समूह छोड़ने लगा। मानो बहुत से पंखवाले साँप दौड़े जा रहे हों। जहाँ-तहाँ वानर गिरते दिखाई पड़ने लगे। उस समय कोई भी उसके सामने न हो सके॥3॥
जहँ तहँ भागि चले कपि रीछा। बिसरी सबहि जुद्ध कै ईछा॥
सो कपि भालु न रन महँ देखा। कीन्हेसि जेहि न प्रान अवसेषा॥4॥
The monkeys and bears fled in all directions, their desire to continue fighting completely forgotten. In the battlefield, there was not a single monkey or bear left whom he had not reduced to the mere trace of life, leaving them with nothing but the faintest breath with all strength and valour lost.
रीछ-वानर जहाँ-तहाँ भाग चले। सबको युद्ध की इच्छा भूल गई। रणभूमि में ऐसा एक भी वानर या भालू नहीं दिखाई पड़ा, जिसको उसने प्राणमात्र अवशेष न कर दिया हो (अर्थात् जिसके केवल प्राणमात्र ही न बचे हों, बल, पुरुषार्थ सारा जाता न रहा हो)॥4॥
* दस दस सर सब मारेसि परे भूमि कपि बीर।
सिंहनाद करि गर्जा मेघनाद बल धीर॥50॥
He shot ten arrows at each one of them, and the valiant monkeys fell to the ground. Meghnad, mighty and steadfast in battle, roared like a lion as he thundered across the field.
फिर उसने सबको दस-दस बाण मारे, वानर वीर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े। बलवान् और धीर मेघनाद सिंह के समान नाद करके गरजने लगा॥50॥
* देखि पवनसुत कटक बिहाला। क्रोधवंत जनु धायउ काला॥
महासैल एक तुरत उपारा। अति रिस मेघनाद पर डारा॥1॥
Seeing the army in distress, the son of the Wind God, Hanuman ji, charged forward in fury, like the God of Death himself rushing into battle. He swiftly uprooted a massive mountain and hurled it toward Meghnad with intense rage.
सारी सेना को बेहाल (व्याकुल) देखकर पवनसुत हनुमान् क्रोध करके ऐसे दौड़े मानो स्वयं काल दौड़ आता हो। उन्होंने तुरंत एक बड़ा भारी पहाड़ उखाड़ लिया और बड़े ही क्रोध के साथ उसे मेघनाद पर छोड़ा॥1॥
आवत देखि गयउ नभ सोई। रथ सारथी तुरग सब खोई॥
बार बार पचार हनुमाना। निकट न आव मरमु सो जाना॥2॥
Seeing the mountain peaks hurling toward him, Meghnad fled into the sky. His chariot, charioteer, and horses were all destroyed. Hanuman ji repeatedly challenged him, but he did not come near, knowing well the extent of Hanuman ji’s power.
पहाड़ों को आते देखकर वह आकाश में उड़ गया। (उसके) रथ, सारथी और घोड़े सब नष्ट हो गए (चूर-चूर हो गए) हनुमान्जी उसे बार-बार ललकारते हैं। पर वह निकट नहीं आता, क्योंकि वह उनके बल का मर्म जानता था॥2॥
रघुपति निकट गयउ घननादा। नाना भाँति करेसि दुर्बादा॥
अस्त्र सस्त्र आयुध सब डारे। कौतुकहीं प्रभु काटि निवारे॥3॥
Meghnad then went toward Lord Raghupati and hurled every kind of abuse at Him, launching all sorts of weapons, both those empowered by spells and those deadly by their very nature, at Shri Ram. The Lord, in sheer play, cut them all apart before they could reach Him.
(तब) मेघनाद श्री रघुनाथजी के पास गया और उसने (उनके प्रति) अनेकों प्रकार के दुर्वचनों का प्रयोग किया। (फिर) उसने उन पर अस्त्र-शस्त्र तथा और सब हथियार चलाए। प्रभु ने खेल में ही सबको काटकर अलग कर दिया॥3॥
देखि प्रताप मूढ़ खिसिआना। करै लाग माया बिधि नाना॥
जिमि कोउ करै गरुड़ सैं खेला। डरपावै गहि स्वल्प सपेला॥4॥
Seeing the Lord’s valour, the fool grew angry and frustrated. He then began displaying his various illusionary powers, just as a person holding a small snake performs antics with it, trying in vain to frighten Garud, the King of Birds.
श्री रामजी का प्रताप (सामर्थ्य) देखकर वह मूर्ख लज्जित हो गया और अनेकों प्रकार की माया करने लगा। जैसे कोई व्यक्ति छोटा सा साँप का बच्चा हाथ में लेकर गरुड़ को डरावे और उससे खेल करे॥4॥
* जासु प्रबल माया बस सिव बिरंचि बड़ छोट।
ताहि दिखावइ निसिचर निज माया मति खोट॥51॥
Whose powerful illusory energy governs all, including Lord Shiv, Lord Brahma, the great Demigods, and even realized beings, before that very Lord the foolish-minded demon was displaying his own petty illusion.
शिवजी और ब्रह्माजी तक बड़े-छोटे (सभी) जिनकी अत्यंत बलवान् माया के वश में हैं, नीच बुद्धि निशाचर उनको अपनी माया दिखलाता है॥51॥

* नभ चढ़ि बरष बिपुल अंगारा। महि ते प्रगट होहिं जलधारा॥
नाना भाँति पिसाच पिसाची। मारु काटु धुनि बोलहिं नाची॥1॥
Meghnad soared high into the sky and rained down blazing fragments of rock and molten fire. He caused countless streams of water to burst forth from the Earth. The ground and the sky swarmed with terrifying demons and demonesses, dancing and shrieking, “Kill them, cut them all!”
आकाश में (ऊँचे) चढ़कर वह बहुत से अंगारे बरसाने लगा। पृथ्वी से जल की धाराएँ प्रकट होने लगीं। अनेक प्रकार के पिशाच तथा पिशाचिनियाँ नाच-नाचकर ‘मारो, काटो’ की आवाज करने लगीं॥1॥
बिष्टा पूय रुधिर कच हाड़ा। बरषइ कबहुँ उपल बहु छाड़ा॥
बरषि धूरि कीन्हेसि अँधिआरा। सूझ न आपन हाथ पसारा॥2॥
At times he rained down filth, pus, blood, hair, and bones, and at other times he hurled countless stones from the sky. Sometimes he released such thick dust that darkness covered everything, and one could not even see their own hands.
वह कभी तो विष्टा, पीब, खून, बाल और हड्डियाँ बरसाता था और कभी बहुत से पत्थर फेंक देता था। फिर उसने धूल बरसाकर ऐसा अँधेरा कर दिया कि अपना ही पसारा हुआ हाथ नहीं सूझता था॥2॥
कपि अकुलाने माया देखें। सब कर मरन बना ऐहि लेखें॥
कौतुक देखि राम मुसुकाने। भए सभीत सकल कपि जाने॥3॥
Seeing the Maya unleashed by Meghnad, the monkeys were overwhelmed with distress, believing that at this rate their lives would soon come to an end. Watching this terrifying display, Shri Ram smiled gently, fully aware of their fear.
माया देखकर वानर अकुला उठे। वे सोचने लगे कि इस हिसाब से (इसी तरह रहा) तो सबका मरण आ बना। यह कौतुक देखकर श्री रामजी मुस्कुराए। उन्होंने जान लिया कि सब वानर भयभीत हो गए हैं॥3॥
एक बान काटी सब माया। जिमि दिनकर हर तिमिर निकाया॥
कृपादृष्टि कपि भालु बिलोके। भए प्रबल रन रहहिं न रोके॥4॥
He then cut through the spell of the demonic illusion with a single arrow, just as the Sun scatters a thick veil of darkness. He cast His gracious glance upon the monkeys and bears, and they became so strong that they appeared unstoppable in battle.
तब श्री रामजी ने एक ही बाण से सारी माया काट डाली, जैसे सूर्य अंधकार के समूह को हर लेता है। तदनन्तर उन्होंने कृपाभरी दृष्टि से वानर-भालुओं की ओर देखा, (जिससे) वे ऐसे प्रबल हो गए कि रण में रोकने पर भी नहीं रुकते थे॥4॥
* आयसु मागि राम पहिं अंगदादि कपि साथ।
लछिमन चले क्रुद्ध होइ बान सरासन हाथ॥52॥
Lakshman ji then bowed at Lord Ram’s feet, and with the Lord’s permission he set out to confront Meghnad in full fury, accompanied by Angad and other brave warriors, his bow and arrow firmly in hand.
श्री रामजी से आज्ञा माँगकर, अंगद आदि वानरों के साथ हाथों में धनुष-बाण लिए हुए श्री लक्ष्मणजी क्रुद्ध होकर चले॥52॥
* छतज नयन उर बाहु बिसाला। हिमगिरि निभ तनु कछु एक लाला॥
इहाँ दसानन सुभट पठाए। नाना अस्त्र सस्त्र गहि धाए॥1॥
Shri Lakshman’s eyes were blood-red, his chest broad, and his arms long and powerful. His complexion shone like the Himalayan mountain with a soft hue of red. There on the battlefield, the ten-headed Ravan sent forth many brave warriors, who charged ahead with countless missiles and weapons in their hands.
उनके लाल नेत्र हैं, चौड़ी छाती और विशाल भुजाएँ हैं। हिमाचल पर्वत के समान उज्ज्वल (गौरवर्ण) शरीर कुछ ललाई लिए हुए है। इधर रावण ने भी बड़े-बड़े योद्धा भेजे, जो अनेकों अस्त्र-शस्त्र लेकर दौड़े॥1॥
भूधर नख बिटपायुध धारी। धाए कपि जय राम पुकारी॥
भिरे सकल जोरिहि सन जोरी। इत उत जय इच्छा नहिं थोरी॥2॥
With mountains, claws, and trees as their weapons, the monkeys rushed forward to meet the demons, shouting, “Victory to Shri Ram!” The armies from both sides clashed, each warrior facing an opponent equal in size and strength. Both sides were equally eager to claim victory in battle.
पर्वत, नख और वृक्ष रूपी हथियार धारण किए हुए वानर ‘श्री रामचंद्रजी की जय’ पुकारकर दौड़े। वानर और राक्षस सब जोड़ी से जोड़ी भिड़ गए। इधर और उधर दोनों ओर जय की इच्छा कम न थी (अर्थात् प्रबल थी)॥2॥
मुठिकन्ह लातन्ह दातन्ह काटहिं। कपि जयसील मारि पुनि डाटहिं॥
मारु मारु धरु धरु धरु मारू। सीस तोरि गहि भुजा उपारू॥3॥
The monkeys struck the demons with their fists and feet and bit them with their teeth. Victorious and fearless, they kept attacking and scolding the demons, shouting, “Finish them, strike them down, capture them, seize them, break their heads, hold their arms and tear them apart!”
वानर उनको घूँसों और लातों से मारते हैं, दाँतों से काटते हैं। विजयशील वानर उन्हें मारकर फिर डाँटते भी हैं। ‘मारो, मारो, पकड़ो, पकड़ो, पकड़कर मार दो, सिर तोड़ दो और भुजाऐँ पकड़कर उखाड़ लो’॥3॥
असि रव पूरि रही नव खंडा। धावहिं जहँ तहँ रुंड प्रचंडा॥
देखहिं कौतुक नभ सुर बृंदा। कबहुँक बिसमय कबहुँ अनंदा॥4॥
Such cries echoed across all nine divisions of the world. Headless bodies ran wildly in every direction. Watching this fierce scene from the sky, the hosts of Demigods rejoiced whenever Lord Ram’s army prevailed and grew distressed whenever Ravan’s demon forces gained the upper hand.
नवों खंडों में ऐसी आवाज भर रही है। प्रचण्ड रुण्ड (धड़) जहाँ-तहाँ दौड़ रहे हैं। आकाश में देवतागण यह कौतुक देख रहे हैं। उन्हें कभी खेद होता है और कभी आनंद॥4॥
* रुधिर गाड़ भरि भरि जम्यो ऊपर धूरि उड़ाइ।
जनु अँगार रासिन्ह पर मृतक धूम रह्यो छाइ॥53॥
The potholes were filled with blood, and a thin sheet of dust covered them, looking like ashes of the dead spread over heaps of glowing coal and lava.
खून गड्ढों में भर-भरकर जम गया है और उस पर धूल उड़कर पड़ रही है (वह दृश्य ऐसा है) मानो अंगारों के ढेरों पर राख छा रही हो॥53॥
* घायल बीर बिराजहिं कैसे। कुसुमति किंसुक के तरु जैसे॥
लछिमन मेघनाद द्वौ जोधा। भिरहिं परसपर करि अति क्रोधा॥1॥
The wounded fighters, their bodies battered and bloodied, looked like palash trees adorned with crimson blossoms. The mighty warriors Lakshman ji and Meghnad fought one another with intense, blazing fury.
घायल वीर कैसे शोभित हैं, जैसे फूले हुए पलास के पेड़। लक्ष्मण और मेघनाद दोनों योद्धा अत्यंत क्रोध करके एक-दूसरे से भिड़ते हैं॥1॥
