सुर दुंदुभीं बजावहिं हरषहिं। अस्तुति करहिं सुमन बहु बरषहिं॥
करि बिनती सुर सकल सिधाए। तेही समय देवरिषि आए॥5॥
The Demigods rejoiced, sounded kettledrums, showered flowers from the sky, and praised the Lord, and after offering their prayers, they departed, and at that very moment the celestial Sage Narad arrived.
देवता नगाड़े बजाते, हर्षित होते और स्तुति करते हुए बहुत से फूल बरसा रहे हैं। विनती करके सब देवता चले गए। उसी समय देवर्षि नारद आए॥5॥
गगनोपरि हरि गुन गन गाए। रुचिर बीररस प्रभु मन भाए॥
बेगि हतहु खल कहि मुनि गए। राम समर महि सोभत भए॥6॥
Standing in mid-air, Narad ji sang the virtues of Lord Hari, Shri Ram, and the Lord was pleased in His heart to hear the warrior spirit with which Narad ji had portrayed Him. When the hymn concluded, Narad ji said, “Now quickly slay the wretched Ravan,” and departed. Shri Ram then advanced into the battlefield, where He shone with majestic splendour.
आकाश के ऊपर से उन्होंने श्री हरि के सुंदर वीर रसयुक्त गुण समूह का गान किया, जो प्रभु के मन को बहुत ही भाया। मुनि यह कहकर चले गए कि अब दुष्ट रावण को शीघ्र मारिए। (उस समय) श्री रामचंद्रजी रणभूमि में आकर (अत्यंत) सुशोभित हुए॥6॥
छंद :
* संग्राम भूमि बिराज रघुपति अतुल बल कोसल धनी।
श्रम बिंदु मुख राजीव लोचन अरुन तन सोनित कनी॥
भुज जुगल फेरत सर सरासन भालु कपि चहु दिसि बने।
कह दास तुलसी कहि न सक छबि सेष जेहि आनन घने॥
Shri Raghupati, the Lord of the Koshal Kingdom and supremely brave, stood resplendent on the battlefield; droplets of sweat adorned His charming face, His lotus eyes glowed slightly red, and specks of blood marked His divine form. With both hands He playfully caressed His bow and arrow as monkeys and bears gathered around Him, and Tulsidas ji declares that even Shesha ji, the thousand-mouthed Lord of Serpents, could not fully describe the splendour of the Lord as He appeared upon that battlefield.
अतुलनीय बल वाले कोसलपति श्री रघुनाथजी रणभूमि में सुशोभित हैं। मुख पर पसीने की बूँदें हैं, कमल समान नेत्र कुछ लाल हो रहे हैं। शरीर पर रक्त के कण हैं, दोनों हाथों से धनुष-बाण फिरा रहे हैं। चारों ओर रीछ-वानर सुशोभित हैं। तुलसीदासजी कहते हैं कि प्रभु की इस छबि का वर्णन शेषजी भी नहीं कर सकते, जिनके बहुत से (हजार) मुख हैं।
* निसिचर अधम मलाकर ताहि दीन्ह निज धाम।
गिरिजा ते नर मंदमति जे न भजहिं श्रीराम॥71॥
Lord Shiv said to Goddess Parvati, “O’ Girija, the demon was vile and filled with wicked qualities, yet Lord Ram granted him a place in His divine abode. Truly dull-witted are those who still do not worship Shri Ram.”
(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे गिरिजे! कुंभकर्ण, जो नीच राक्षस और पाप की खान था, उसे भी श्री रामजी ने अपना परमधाम दे दिया। अतः वे मनुष्य (निश्चय ही) मंदबुद्धि हैं, जो उन श्री रामजी को नहीं भजते॥71॥
*दिन के अंत फिरीं द्वौ अनी। समर भई सुभटन्ह श्रम घनी॥
राम कृपाँ कपि दल बल बाढ़ा। जिमि तृन पाइ लाग अति डाढ़ा॥1॥
At day’s end, both armies retired to their respective camps. The battle had been exceptionally exhausting for the brave warriors, yet by the grace of Shri Ram, the monkey army regained its strength, rising once more like a fire that flares up when fed with straw.
दिन का अन्त होने पर दोनों सेनाएँ लौट पड़ीं। (आज के युद्ध में) योद्धाओं को बड़ी थकावट हुई, परन्तु श्री रामजी की कृपा से वानर सेना का बल उसी प्रकार बढ़ गया, जैसे घास पाकर अग्नि बहुत बढ़ जाती है॥1॥
छीजहिं निसिचर दिनु अरु राती। निज मुख कहें सुकृत जेहि भाँती॥
बहु बिलाप दसकंधर करई। बंधु सीस पुनि पुनि उर धरई॥2॥
The demon troops were dwindling day by day, just as a person’s merit diminishes when he boasts of his own good deeds, and the ten-headed Ravan grieved bitterly, holding his brother’s head and pressing it again and again to his chest.
उधर राक्षस दिन-रात इस प्रकार घटते जा रहे हैं, जिस प्रकार अपने ही मुख से कहने पर पुण्य घट जाते हैं। रावण बहुत विलाप कर रहा है। बार-बार भाई (कुंभकर्ण) का सिर कलेजे से लगाता है॥2॥
रोवहिं नारि हृदय हति पानी। तासु तेज बल बिपुल बखानी॥
मेघनाद तेहि अवसर आयउ। कहि बहु कथा पिता समुझायउ॥3॥
Women in the palace wept and struck their chests, mourning as they praised Kumbhkaran’s extraordinary valour and immense strength. At that moment, Ravan’s son Meghnad arrived and consoled his father by recounting many legends.
स्त्रियाँ उसके बड़े भारी तेज और बल को बखान करके हाथों से छाती पीट-पीटकर रो रही हैं। उसी समय मेघनाद आया और उसने बहुत सी कथाएँ कहकर पिता को समझाया॥3॥
देखेहु कालि मोरि मनुसाई। अबहिं बहुत का करौं बड़ाई॥
इष्टदेव सैं बल रथ पायउँ। सो बल तात न तोहि देखायउँ॥4॥
Meghnad said, “Tomorrow you shall witness my prowess, for there is no purpose in boasting about it now. The divine chariot and the immense strength I once received from my revered deity are powers I have not yet revealed to you, dear father.”
(और कहा-) कल मेरा पुरुषार्थ देखिएगा। अभी बहुत बड़ाई क्या करूँ? हे तात! मैंने अपने इष्टदेव से जो बल और रथ पाया था, वह बल (और रथ) अब तक आपको नहीं दिखलाया था॥4॥
एहि बिधि जल्पत भयउ बिहाना। चहुँ दुआर लागे कपि नाना॥
इति कपि भालु काल सम बीरा। उत रजनीचर अति रनधीरा॥5॥
As he boasted in this way, dawn broke, and the monkey army once again surrounded all four gates of Lanka. On one side stood the monkeys and bears, fearsome as death, and on the other stood the demons, steadfast and formidable in battle.
इस प्रकार डींग मारते हुए सबेरा हो गया। लंका के चारों दरवाजों पर बहुत से वानर आ डटे। इधर काल के समान वीर वानर-भालू हैं और उधर अत्यंत रणधीर राक्षस॥5॥
लरहिं सुभट निज निज जय हेतू। बरनि न जाइ समर खगकेतू॥6॥
Kak Bhushundi ji told Garud ji, “O’ King of birds, every brave warrior fought for the triumph of his own side, and the battle rose to such ferocity that it defied all description.”
दोनों ओर के योद्धा अपनी-अपनी जय के लिए लड़ रहे हैं। हे गरुड़ उनके युद्ध का वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता॥6॥
* मेघनाद मायामय रथ चढ़ि गयउ अकास।
गर्जेउ अट्टहास करि भइ कपि कटकहि त्रास॥72॥
Meanwhile, Meghnad mounted his illusory chariot, rose into the sky, and let out a terrifying laugh that sent fear coursing through the monkey army.
मेघनाद उसी (पूर्वोक्त) मायामय रथ पर चढ़कर आकाश में चला गया और अट्टहास करके गरजा, जिससे वानरों की सेना में भय छा गया॥72॥
* सक्ति सूल तरवारि कृपाना। अस्त्र सस्त्र कुलिसायुध नाना॥
डारइ परसु परिघ पाषाना। लागेउ बृष्टि करै बहु बाना॥1॥
Meghnad unleashed a torrent of formidable weapons, spears, swords, scimitars, thunderbolts, and countless missiles, and poured down axes, iron clubs, and rocks, along with many spell-empowered arrows.
वह शक्ति, शूल, तलवार, कृपाण आदि अस्त्र, शास्त्र एवं वज्र आदि बहुत से आयुध चलाने तथा फरसे, परिघ, पत्थर आदि डालने और बहुत से बाणों की वृष्टि करने लगा॥1॥
दस दिसि रहे बान नभ छाई। मानहुँ मघा मेघ झरि लाई॥
धरु धरु मारु सुनिअ धुनि काना। जो मारइ तेहि कोउ न जाना॥2॥
Arrows filled the sky in all ten directions, as if clouds of Magh, (the star group in the Leo constellation), were pouring down in torrents. Cries of “Catch him, strike him” echoed on all sides, yet no one could see who was actually delivering the blows.
आकाश में दसों दिशाओं में बाण छा गए, मानो मघा नक्षत्र के बादलों ने झड़ी लगा दी हो। ‘पकड़ो, पकड़ो, मारो’ ये शब्द सुनाई पड़ते हैं। पर जो मार रहा है, उसे कोई नहीं जान पाता॥2॥
गहि गिरि तरु अकास कपि धावहिं। देखहिं तेहि न दुखित फिरि आवहिं॥
अवघट घाट बाट गिरि कंदर। माया बल कीन्हेसि सर पंजर॥3॥
Holding mountains and trees, the monkeys leapt into the sky but, unable to see Meghnad, returned in utter disappointment. Using his illusory powers, Meghnad thickly blanketed the rugged valleys, pathways, and mountain caves until they resembled cages made of arrows.
पर्वत और वृक्षों को लेकर वानर आकाश में दौड़कर जाते हैं। पर उसे देख नहीं पाते, इससे दुःखी होकर लौट आते हैं। मेघनाद ने माया के बल से अटपटी घाटियों, रास्तों और पर्वतों-कन्दराओं को बाणों के पिंजरे बना दिए (बाणों से छा दिया)॥3॥
जाहिं कहाँ ब्याकुल भए बंदर। सुरपति बंदि परे जनु मंदर॥
मारुतसुत अंगद नल नीला। कीन्हेसि बिकल सकल बलसीला॥4॥
The monkeys were bewildered and knew not where to turn, feeling helpless as though the Mandrachal mountains themselves had been imprisoned by Indra. Hanuman ji, the son of the Wind God, along with other mighty warriors such as Angad, Nal, and Neel, storehouses of strength and endurance, were utterly distressed.
अब कहाँ जाएँ, यह सोचकर (रास्ता न पाकर) वानर व्याकुल हो गए। मानो पर्वत इंद्र की कैद में पड़े हों। मेघनाद ने मारुति हनुमान्, अंगद, नल और नील आदि सभी बलवानों को व्याकुल कर दिया॥4॥
पुनि लछिमन सुग्रीव बिभीषन। सरन्हि मारि कीन्हेसि जर्जर तन॥
पुनि रघुपति सैं जूझै लागा। सर छाँड़इ होइ लागहिं नागा॥5॥
After that, Meghnad shot a fierce stream of arrows at Lakshman ji, Sugriv, and Vibhishan, wounding their bodies severely, then he charged toward Shri Raghupati, and the arrows he released transformed into serpents as they struck Shri Ram.
फिर उसने लक्ष्मणजी, सुग्रीव और विभीषण को बाणों से मारकर उनके शरीर को छलनी कर दिया। फिर वह श्री रघुनाथजी से लड़ने लगा। वह जो बाण छोड़ता है, वे साँप होकर लगते हैं॥5॥
ब्याल पास बस भए खरारी। स्वबस अनंत एक अबिकारी॥
नट इव कपट चरित कर नाना। सदा स्वतंत्र एक भगवाना॥6॥
The slayer of the demon Khar, Shri Ram, all-capable, independent, infinite, the One without a second and untouched by any defect, was enveloped by the serpents’ coils, and like a skillful juggler, the ever-free, sole Supreme Lord revealed yet another of His wondrous, playful acts.
जो स्वतंत्र, अनन्त, एक (अखंड) और निर्विकार हैं, वे खर के शत्रु श्री रामजी (लीला से) नागपाश के वश में हो गए (उससे बँध गए) श्री रामचंद्रजी सदा स्वतंत्र, एक, (अद्वितीय) भगवान् हैं। वे नट की तरह अनेकों प्रकार के दिखावटी चरित्र करते हैं॥6॥
रन सोभा लगि प्रभुहिं बँधायो। नागपास देवन्ह भय पायो॥7॥
For the splendour befitting the battlefield, the Lord allowed Himself to be bound by the serpent-noose, but this sight filled the Demigods with great fear.
रण की शोभा के लिए प्रभु ने अपने को नागपाश में बाँध लिया, किन्तु उससे देवताओं को बड़ा भय हुआ॥7॥
* गिरिजा जासु नाम जपि मुनि काटहिं भव पास।
सो कि बंध तर आवइ ब्यापक बिस्व निवास॥73॥
Lord Shiv said to Goddess Parvati, “O’ Girija, the very Lord whose name enables Sages to cut the endless bonds of worldly existence, can that omnipresent One, within whom the entire Cosmos resides, ever truly be caught in any snare?…
(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे गिरिजे! जिनका नाम जपकर मुनि भव (जन्म-मृत्यु) की फाँसी को काट डालते हैं, वे सर्वव्यापक और विश्व निवास (विश्व के आधार) प्रभु कहीं बंधन में आ सकते हैं?॥73॥
* चरित राम के सगुन भवानी। तर्कि न जाहिं बुद्धि बल बानी॥
अस बिचारि जे तग्य बिरागी। रामहि भजहिं तर्क सब त्यागी॥1॥
…O’ Bhawani, the exploits of Shri Ram in His human incarnation cannot be grasped by logic, reason, or speech. Understanding this within themselves, those who know the supreme truth and those who are truly detached, abandon all theological speculation and worship only Shri Ram.”
हे भवानी! श्री रामजी की इस सगुण लीलाओं के विषय में बुद्धि और वाणी के बल से तर्क (निर्णय) नहीं किया जा सकता। ऐसा विचार कर जो तत्त्वज्ञानी और विरक्त पुरुष हैं, वे सब तर्क (शंका) छोड़कर श्री रामजी का भजन ही करते हैं॥।1॥
ब्याकुल कटकु कीन्ह घननादा। पुनि भा प्रगट कहइ दुर्बादा॥
जामवंत कह खल रहु ठाढ़ा। सुनि करि ताहि क्रोध अति बाढ़ा॥2॥
Meghnad bewildered the entire monkey army and then finally revealed himself, hurling abuses, and Jambvant said, “O’ Vile one, remain standing for a while,” and hearing these words, Meghnad’s anger flared even more.
मेघनाद ने सेना को व्याकुल कर दिया। फिर वह प्रकट हो गया और दुर्वचन कहने लगा। इस पर जाम्बवान् ने कहा- अरे दुष्ट! खड़ा रह। यह सुनकर उसे बड़ा क्रोध बढ़ा॥2॥
बूढ़ जानि सठ छाँड़ेउँ तोही। लागेसि अधम पचारै मोही॥
अस कहि तरल त्रिसूल चलायो। जामवंत कर गहि सोइ धायो॥3॥
He said, “O’ Fool, knowing you were old, I had spared your life, yet you dare challenge me, O’ Lowly creature,” and with these words Meghnad hurled his swift-moving trident at Jambvant. Jambvant caught it with his hands, charged toward Meghnad,…
अरे मूर्ख! मैंने बूढ़ा जानकर तुझको छोड़ दिया था। अरे अधम! अब तू मुझे ही ललकारने लगा है? ऐसा कहकर उसने चमकता हुआ त्रिशूल चलाया। जाम्बवान् उसी त्रिशूल को हाथ से पकड़कर दौड़ा॥3॥
मारिसि मेघनाद कै छाती। परा भूमि घुर्मित सुरघाती॥
पुनि रिसान गहि चरन फिरायो। महि पछारि निज बल देखरायो॥4॥
…and drove it into his chest. The enemy of the Demigods swirled and fell to the ground, and in a fit of fury Jambvant seized Meghnad by the foot, swung him around, and dashed him against the Earth, thus displaying his strength before him.
और उसे मेघनाद की छाती पर दे मारा। वह देवताओं का शत्रु चक्कर खाकर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा। जाम्बवान् ने फिर क्रोध में भरकर पैर पकड़कर उसको घुमाया और पृथ्वी पर पटककर उसे अपना बल दिखलाया॥4॥
बर प्रसाद सो मरइ न मारा। तब गहि पद लंका पर डारा॥
इहाँ देवरिषि गरुड़ पठायो। राम समीप सपदि सो आयो॥5॥
But due to the boon granted to him by Lord Brahma, Meghnad did not die even after such a deadly blow, whereupon Jambvant seized him by the foot and hurled him into Lanka, and at that moment Sage Narad sent Garud ji, who swiftly arrived at Lord Ram’s side.
(किन्तु) वरदान के प्रताप से वह मारे नहीं मरता। तब जाम्बवान् ने उसका पैर पकड़कर उसे लंका पर फेंक दिया। इधर देवर्षि नारदजी ने गरुड़ को भेजा। वे तुरंत ही श्री रामजी के पास आ पहुँचे॥5॥
* खगपति सब धरि खाए माया नाग बरुथ।
माया बिगत भए सब हरषे बानर जूथ॥74 क॥
TThe King of Birds, Garud ji, seized and consumed all the swarms of snakes produced by Meghnad’s illusory power, and once that illusion was dispelled, the monkey army rejoiced.
पक्षीराज गरुड़जी सब माया-सर्पों के समूहों को पकड़कर खा गए। तब सब वानरों के झुंड माया से रहित होकर हर्षित हुए॥74 क॥
गहि गिरि पादप उपल नख धाए कीस रिसाइ।
चले तमीचर बिकलतर गढ़ पर चढ़े पराइ॥74 ख॥
In a furious rage, the monkeys surged forward with mountains, rocks, and trees in their hands, even using their claws as weapons, and the terrified demons fled in panic, scrambling up the fort for safety.
पर्वत, वृक्ष, पत्थर और नख धारण किए वानर क्रोधित होकर दौड़े। निशाचर विशेष व्याकुल होकर भाग चले और भागकर किले पर चढ़ गए॥74 ख॥
* मेघनाद कै मुरछा जागी। पितहि बिलोकि लाज अति लागी॥
तुरत गयउ गिरिबर कंदरा। करौं अजय मख अस मन धरा॥1॥
Meanwhile, Meghnad regained consciousness and, feeling deeply ashamed before his father, immediately departed for a mountain cave, harbouring the intent to perform a sacrificial rite through which he hoped to attain invincibility.
मेघनाद की मूर्च्छा छूटी, (तब) पिता को देखकर उसे बड़ी शर्म लगी। मैं अजय (अजेय होने को) यज्ञ करूँ, ऐसा मन में निश्चय करके वह तुरंत श्रेष्ठ पर्वत की गुफा में चला गया॥1॥
इहाँ बिभीषन मंत्र बिचारा। सुनहु नाथ बल अतुल उदारा॥
मेघनाद मख करइ अपावन। खल मायावी देव सतावन॥2॥
Here, Vibhishan reflected on the matter and said, “O’ Lord, unmatched in strength and full of noble grace, listen! Meghnad, the wicked master of deceitful illusions, who torments the Demigods, is performing an impure sacrificial ritual…
यहाँ विभीषण ने सलाह विचारी (और श्री रामचंद्रजी से कहा-) हे अतुलनीय बलवान् उदार प्रभो! देवताओं को सताने वाला दुष्ट, मायावी मेघनाद अपवित्र यज्ञ कर रहा है॥2॥
जौं प्रभु सिद्ध होइ सो पाइहि। नाथ बेगि पुनि जीति न जाइहि॥
सुनि रघुपति अतिसय सुख माना। बोले अंगदादि कपि नाना॥3॥
…O’ Lord, if that sacrificial rite is completed successfully, then O’ Master, Meghnad will no longer be easily defeated. Hearing this, Shri Raghunath was greatly pleased and called for many monkeys, including Angad, and said,…
हे प्रभो! यदि वह यज्ञ सिद्ध हो पाएगा तो हे नाथ! फिर मेघनाद जल्दी जीता न जा सकेगा। यह सुनकर श्री रघुनाथजी ने बहुत सुख माना और अंगदादि बहुत से वानरों को बुलाया (और कहा-)॥3॥
लछिमन संग जाहु सब भाई। करहु बिधंस जग्य कर जाई॥
तुम्ह लछिमन मारेहु रन ओही। देखि सभय सुर दुख अति मोही॥4॥
…“O’ Brothers, go with Lakshman and destroy that sacrificial rite, and Lakshman, go and slay Meghnad in battle, for I am deeply grieved to see the Demigods in fear…
हे भाइयों! सब लोग लक्ष्मण के साथ जाओ और जाकर यज्ञ को विध्वंस करो। हे लक्ष्मण! संग्राम में तुम उसे मारना। देवताओं को भयभीत देखकर मुझे बड़ा दुःख है॥4॥
मारेहु तेहि बल बुद्धि उपाई। जेहिं छीजै निसिचर सुनु भाई॥
जामवंत सुग्रीव बिभीषन। सेन समेत रहेहु तीनिउ जन॥5॥
…Brother, listen, strike him down through strength and wise strategy in such a way that the demon is certainly destroyed. O’ Jambvant, Sugriv, and Vibhishan, the three of you remain with him along with the army.”
हे भाई! सुनो, उसको ऐसे बल और बुद्धि के उपाय से मारना, जिससे निशाचर का नाश हो। हे जाम्बवान, सुग्रीव और विभीषण! तुम तीनों जन सेना समेत (इनके) साथ रहना॥5॥
जब रघुबीर दीन्हि अनुसासन। कटि निषंग कसि साजि सरासन॥
प्रभु प्रताप उर धरि रनधीरा। बोले घन इव गिरा गँभीरा॥6॥
As soon as Shri Raghuveer issued His command, the valiant Shri Lakshman fastened his quiver at his waist and strung his bow, and invoking the Lord’s glory within his heart, he spoke in a voice deep as thunder,…
(इस प्रकार) जब श्री रघुवीर ने आज्ञा दी, तब कमर में तरकस कसकर और धनुष सजाकर (चढ़ाकर) रणधीर श्री लक्ष्मणजी प्रभु के प्रताप को हृदय में धारण करके मेघ के समान गंभीर वाणी बोले-॥6॥
जौं तेहि आजु बंधे बिनु आवौं। तौ रघुपति सेवक न कहावौं॥
जौं सत संकर करहिं सहाई। तदपि हतउँ रघुबीर ई॥7॥
…”If I return today without slaying Meghnad, then I shall no longer call myself a servant of Raghupati. Even if hundreds of Lord Shankars come to his aid, I will yet kill him. I swear upon Shri Raghuveer.”
यदि मैं आज उसे बिना मारे आऊँ, तो श्री रघुनाथजी का सेवक न कहलाऊँ। यदि सैकड़ों शंकर भी उसकी सहायता करें तो भी श्री रघुवीर की दुहाई है, आज मैं उसे मार ही डालूँगा॥7॥
* रघुपति चरन नाइ सिरु चलेउ तुरंत अनंत।
अंगद नील मयंद नल संग सुभट हनुमंत॥75॥
Bowing his head at Lord Raghupati’s feet, Lakshman ji advanced swiftly, accompanied by brave warriors such as Angad, Mayand, Nal, Neel, and Hanuman.
श्री रघुनाथजी के चरणों में सिर नवाकर शेषावतार श्री लक्ष्मणजी तुरंत चले। उनके साथ अंगद, नील, मयंद, नल और हनुमान आदि उत्तम योद्धा थे॥75॥
* जाइ कपिन्ह सो देखा बैसा। आहुति देत रुधिर अरु भैंसा॥
कीन्ह कपिन्ह सब जग्य बिधंसा। जब न उठइ तब करहिं प्रसंसा॥1॥
The monkeys went and saw him seated, offering blood and buffalo oblations into the fire. They destroyed the entire ritual, yet he did not rise, so they began to praise him instead.
वानरों ने जाकर देखा कि वह बैठा हुआ खून और भैंसे की आहुति दे रहा है। वानरों ने सब यज्ञ विध्वंस कर दिया। फिर भी वह नहीं उठा, तब वे उसकी प्रशंसा करने लगे॥1॥
तदपि न उठइ धरेन्हि कच जाई। लातन्हि हति हति चले पराई॥
लै त्रिसूल धावा कपि भागे। आए जहँ रामानुज आगे॥2॥
When he still refused to rise (for standing up would have broken his sacrificial ritual) the monkeys seized him by the hair, kicked him one after another, and then scattered. Enraged, Meghnad leapt to his feet, trident in hand, and charged after them, eventually arriving at the place where Shri Ram’s younger brother, Lakshman ji, stood before his army.
इतने पर भी वह न उठा, (तब) उन्होंने जाकर उसके बाल पकड़े और लातों से मार-मारकर वे भाग चले। वह त्रिशूल लेकर दौड़ा, तब वानर भागे और वहाँ आ गए, जहाँ आगे लक्ष्मणजी खड़े थे॥2॥
आवा परम क्रोध कर मारा। गर्ज घोर रव बारहिं बारा॥
कोपि मरुतसुत अंगद धाए। हति त्रिसूल उर धरनि गिराए॥3॥
Driven by intense fury over the ruin of his sacrificial rite, Meghnad roared again and again, and when Angad and Hanuman ji, the son of the Wind God, rushed forward to confront him, he struck them both with his trident and hurled them to the ground.
वह अत्यंत क्रोध का मारा हुआ आया और बार-बार भयंकर शब्द करके गरजने लगा। मारुति (हनुमान्) और अंगद क्रोध करके दौड़े। उसने छाती में त्रिशूल मारकर दोनों को धरती पर गिरा दिया॥3॥
प्रभु कहँ छाँड़ेसि सूल प्रचंडा। सर हति कृत अनंत जुग खंडा॥
उठि बहोरि मारुति जुबराजा। हतहिं कोपि तेहि घाउ न बाजा॥4॥
Meghnad then hurled his fierce trident at Lakshman ji, but Anant (Shri Lakshman) intercepted it with an arrow, shattering it into two pieces, and meanwhile Hanuman ji, the son of the Wind God, and Prince Angad rose and angrily struck Meghnad, yet they were unable to inflict any injury upon him.
फिर उसने प्रभु श्री लक्ष्मणजी पर त्रिशूल छोड़ा। अनन्त (श्री लक्ष्मणजी) ने बाण मारकर उसके दो टुकड़े कर दिए। हनुमान्जी और युवराज अंगद फिर उठकर क्रोध करके उसे मारने लगे, उसे चोट न लगी॥4॥
फिरे बीर रिपु मरइ न मारा। तब धावा करि घोर चिकारा॥
आवत देखि कुरद्ध जनु काला। लछिमन छाड़े बिसिख कराला॥5॥
When the enemy remained invincible despite their greatest efforts, the mighty monkey warriors turned back. At that very moment Meghnad advanced with a terrifying scream. Seeing him charge forward in fury, like Death personified, Lakshman ji unleashed a volley of fierce arrows.
शत्रु (मेघनाद) मारे नहीं मरता, यह देखकर जब वीर लौटे, तब वह घोर चिग्घाड़ करके दौड़ा। उसे क्रुद्ध काल की तरह आता देखकर लक्ष्मणजी ने भयानक बाण छोड़े॥5॥
देखेसि आवत पबि सम बाना। तुरत भयउ खल अंतरधाना॥
बिबिध बेष धरि करइ लराई। कबहुँक प्रगट कबहुँ दुरि जाई॥6॥
As arrows swift like thunderbolts sped toward him, the vile demon instantly turned invisible, then began assuming various forms to battle Lakshman ji, at times appearing directly before him and at times vanishing completely from sight.
वज्र के समान बाणों को आते देखकर वह दुष्ट तुरंत अंतर्धान हो गया और फिर भाँति-भाँति के रूप धारण करके युद्ध करने लगा। वह कभी प्रकट होता था और कभी छिप जाता था॥6॥
देखि अजय रिपु डरपे कीसा। परम क्रुद्ध तब भयउ अहीसा॥
लछिमन मन अस मंत्र दृढ़ावा। ऐहि पापिहि मैं बहुत खेलावा॥7॥
Seeing such an invincible foe, the monkeys were gripped with fear, while Lakshman ji, the Lord of Serpents, grew intensely furious and resolved in his heart, “I have played with this wretch long enough, now it is time to end him.”
शत्रु को पराजित न होता देखकर वानर डरे। तब सर्पराज शेषजी (लक्ष्मणजी) बहुत क्रोधित हुए। लक्ष्मणजी ने मन में यह विचार दृढ़ किया कि इस पापी को मैं बहुत खेला चुका (अब और अधिक खेलाना अच्छा नहीं, अब तो इसे समाप्त ही कर देना चाहिए।)॥7॥
सुमिरि कोसलाधीस प्रतापा। सर संधान कीन्ह करि दापा॥
छाड़ा बान माझ उर लागा। मरती बार कपटु सब त्यागा॥8॥
Then, invoking the glory of Shri Ram, the Lord of the Koshal Kingdom, within his heart, Lakshman ji set an arrow to his bow and, with blazing fury, released it; the arrow struck Meghnad in the centre of the chest, and at the moment of death the demon abandoned all his deceptive forms.
कोसलपति श्री रामजी के प्रताप का स्मरण करके लक्ष्मणजी ने वीरोचित दर्प करके बाण का संधान किया। बाण छोड़ते ही उसकी छाती के बीच में लगा। मरते समय उसने सब कपट त्याग दिया॥8॥
* रामानुज कहँ रामु कहँ अस कहि छाँड़ेसि प्रान।
धन्य धन्य तव जननी कह अंगद हनुमान॥76॥
With the words, “Where is the younger brother of Ram? Where is Ram?” Meghnad breathed his last. Hearing this, Angad and Hanuman ji praised him, saying, “Blessed indeed is your mother, for her son uttered the names of Lord Ram and Lakshman ji at the moment of death.”
राम के छोटे भाई लक्ष्मण कहाँ हैं? राम कहाँ हैं? ऐसा कहकर उसने प्राण छोड़ दिए। अंगद और हनुमान कहने लगे- तेरी माता धन्य है, धन्य है (जो तू लक्ष्मणजी के हाथों मरा और मरते समय श्री राम-लक्ष्मण को स्मरण करके तूने उनके नामों का उच्चारण किया।)॥76॥
* बिनु प्रयास हनुमान उठायो। लंका द्वार राखि पुनि आयो॥
तासु मरन सुनि सुर गंधर्बा। चढ़ि बिमान आए नभ सर्बा॥1॥
With little effort, Hanuman ji lifted Meghnad, placed him outside the gate of Lanka, and returned, and when the Demigods and Sages heard of Meghnad’s death, they appeared in the sky above in their aerial vehicles.
हनुमान्जी ने उसको बिना ही परिश्रम के उठा लिया और लंका के दरवाजे पर रखकर वे लौट आए। उसका मरना सुनकर देवता और गंधर्व आदि सब विमानों पर चढ़कर आकाश में आए॥1॥
बरषि सुमन दुंदुभीं बजावहिं। श्रीरघुनाथ बिमल जसु गावहिं॥
जय अनंत जय जगदाधारा। तुम्ह प्रभु सब देवन्हि निस्तारा॥2॥
Showering flowers and sounding kettledrums, they sang the sacred glory of Shri Raghunath. “Victory to Lord Anant, victory to the support of the entire Universe! O’ Lord, you have lifted the sorrow of all the Demigods.”
वे फूल बरसाकर नगाड़े बजाते हैं और श्री रघुनाथजी का निर्मल यश गाते हैं। हे अनन्त! आपकी जय हो, हे जगदाधार! आपकी जय हो। हे प्रभो! आपने सब देवताओं का (महान् विपत्ति से) उद्धार किया॥2॥
अस्तुति करि सुर सिद्ध सिधाए। लछिमन कृपासिंधु पहिं आए॥
सुत बध सुना दसानन जबहीं। मुरुछित भयउ परेउ महि तबहीं॥3॥
After offering their praises, the Demigods and realized Saints departed, and Lakshman ji returned to Shri Ram, the ocean of mercy. The moment the ten-headed Ravan heard of his son’s death, he collapsed unconscious to the ground.
देवता और सिद्ध स्तुति करके चले गए, तब लक्ष्मणजी कृपा के समुद्र श्री रामजी के पास आए। रावण ने ज्यों ही पुत्रवध का समाचार सुना, त्यों ही वह मूर्च्छित होकर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा॥3॥
मंदोदरी रुदन कर भारी। उर ताड़न बहु भाँति पुकारी॥
नगर लोग सब ब्याकुल सोचा। सकल कहहिं दसकंधर पोचा॥4॥
Mandodari wept bitterly, striking her chest again and again as she wailed in many ways, and the citizens of Lanka were overwhelmed with sorrow; all of them blamed Ravan and spoke harshly against him.
मंदोदरी छाती पीट-पीटकर और बहुत प्रकार से पुकार-पुकारकर बड़ा भारी विलाप करने लगी। नगर के सब लोग शोक से व्याकुल हो गए। सभी रावण को नीच कहने लगे॥4॥
* तब दसकंठ बिबिधि बिधि समुझाईं सब नारि।
नस्वर रूप जगत सब देखहु हृदयँ बिचारि॥77॥
The ten-headed Ravan then tried to console the women in many ways, saying, “This entire world is perishable; understand and accept this truth in your hearts.”
तब रावण ने सब स्त्रियों को अनेकों प्रकार से समझाया कि समस्त जगत् का यह (दृश्य)रूप नाशवान् है, हृदय में विचारकर देखो॥77॥
* तिन्हहि ग्यान उपदेसा रावन। आपुन मंद कथा सुभ पावन॥
पर उपदेस कुसल बहुतेरे। जे आचरहिं ते नर न घनेरे॥1॥
Ravan then lectured them on spiritual knowledge; though he was dull-witted, the stories he narrated were sacred and pure, for the world is filled with those who can preach well, yet those who truly live by what they teach are exceedingly rare.
रावण ने उनको ज्ञान का उपदेश किया। वह स्वयं तो नीच है, पर उसकी कथा (बातें) शुभ और पवित्र हैं। दूसरों को उपदेश देने में तो बहुत लोग निपुण होते हैं। पर ऐसे लोग अधिक नहीं हैं, जो उपदेश के अनुसार आचरण भी करते हैं॥1॥
निसा सिरानि भयउ भिनुसारा। लगे भालु कपि चारिहुँ द्वारा॥
सुभट बोलाइ दसानन बोला। रन सन्मुख जाकर मन डोला॥2॥
