* काटत सिर होइहि बिकल छुटि जाइहि तव ध्यान।
तब रावनहि हृदय महुँ मरिहहिं रामु सुजान॥99॥
…When Ravan, distressed by the severing of his heads, turns his mind away from thoughts of you, at that very moment the all-wise Shri Ram will strike an arrow into Ravan’s heart.”
सिरों के बार-बार काटे जाने से जब वह व्याकुल हो जाएगा और उसके हृदय से तुम्हारा ध्यान छूट जाएगा, तब सुजान (अंतर्यामी) श्री रामजी रावण के हृदय में बाण मारेंगे॥99॥
* अस कहि बहुत भाँति समुझाई। पुनि त्रिजटा निज भवन सिधाई॥
राम सुभाउ सुमिरि बैदेही। उपजी बिरह बिथा अति तेही॥1॥
In this way, Trijita consoled Sita ji with gentle words and then returned to her home. Videhi ji thereafter recalled the tender and compassionate nature of Shri Ram, and the memory of Him intensified the deep anguish born of their separation.
ऐसा कहकर और सीताजी को बहुत प्रकार से समझाकर फिर त्रिजटा अपने घर चली गई। श्री रामचंद्रजी के स्वभाव का स्मरण करके जानकीजी को अत्यंत विरह व्यथा उत्पन्न हुई॥1॥
निसिहि ससिहि निंदति बहु भाँति। जुग सम भई सिराति न राती॥
करति बिलाप मनहिं मन भारी। राम बिरहँ जानकी दुखारी॥2॥
She cursed the night and the Moon in many ways and said to Herself, “This night has stretched on like an age and refuses to end.” Tormented by separation from Shri Ram, Janaki ji grieved deeply within Her heart.
वे रात्रि की और चंद्रमा की बहुत प्रकार से निंदा कर रही हैं (और कह रही हैं-) रात युग के समान बड़ी हो गई, वह बीतती ही नहीं। जानकीजी श्री रामजी के विरह में दुःखी होकर मन ही मन भारी विलाप कर रही हैं॥2॥
जब अति भयउ बिरह उर दाहू। फरकेउ बाम नयन अरु बाहू॥
सगुन बिचारि धरी मन धीरा। अब मिलिहहिं कृपाल रघुबीरा॥3॥
When Sita ji’s heart overflowed with intense anguish from the pain of separation, Her left arm and eye began to throb. Taking this as a favourable omen, She steadied Herself and said, “Now the compassionate Raghuveer will surely come to meet me.”
जब विरह के मारे हृदय में दारुण दाह हो गया, तब उनका बायाँ नेत्र और बाहु फड़क उठे। शकुन समझकर उन्होंने मन में धैर्य धारण किया कि अब कृपालु श्री रघुवीर अवश्य मिलेंगे॥3॥
इहाँ अर्धनिसि रावनु जागा। निज सारथि सन खीझन लागा।
सठ रनभूमि छड़ाइसि मोही। धिग धिग अधम मंदमति तोही॥4॥
In his palace at midnight, Ravan regained consciousness and began scolding his charioteer, saying, “O’ Fool, you brought me away from the battlefield. Shame, shame on you, O’ Vile and dull-witted one.”
यहाँ आधी रात को रावण (मूर्च्छा से) जागा और अपने सारथी पर रुष्ट होकर कहने लगा- अरे मूर्ख! तूने मुझे रणभूमि से अलग कर दिया। अरे अधम! अरे मंदबुद्धि! तुझे धिक्कार है, धिक्कार है!॥4॥
तेहिं पद गहि बहु बिधि समुझावा। भोरु भएँ रथ चढ़ि पुनि धावा॥
सुनि आगवनु दसानन केरा। कपि दल खरभर भयउ घनेरा॥5॥
The charioteer clasped his feet and explained to him in various ways. At dawn, Ravan once again mounted his chariot and rushed back to the battlefield. Hearing that the ten-headed Ravan had returned, a great commotion arose within the monkey army.
सारथि ने चरण पकड़कर रावण को बहुत प्रकार से समझाया। सबेरा होते ही वह रथ पर चढ़कर फिर दौड़ा। रावण का आना सुनकर वानरों की सेना में बड़ी खलबली मच गई॥5॥
जहँ तहँ भूधर बिटप उपारी। धाए कटकटाइ भट भारी॥6॥
The brave fighters uprooted mountains and trees wherever they could find them, and, gnashing their teeth and uttering shrill cries, they rushed forward to engage Ravan in battle.
वे भारी योद्धा जहाँ-तहाँ से पर्वत और वृक्ष उखाड़कर (क्रोध से) दाँत कटकटाकर दौड़े॥6॥
छंद :
* धाए जो मर्कट बिकट भालु कराल कर भूधर धरा।
अति कोप करहिं प्रहार मारत भजि चले रजनीचरा॥
बिचलाइ दल बलवंत कीसन्ह घेरि पुनि रावनु लियो।
चहुँ दिसि चपेटन्हि मारि नखन्हि बिदारि तन ब्याकुल कियो॥
The formidable monkeys and bears charged forward with mountains in their hands, hurling them in fury at the demon army and forcing it to scatter and flee. Having driven the demons away, the mighty monkeys surrounded Ravan on all sides, striking him with slaps, tearing at his body with their claws, and leaving him battered and distressed.
विकट और विकराल वानर-भालू हाथों में पर्वत लिए दौड़े। वे अत्यंत क्रोध करके प्रहार करते हैं। उनके मारने से राक्षस भाग चले। बलवान् वानरों ने शत्रु की सेना को विचलित करके फिर रावण को घेर लिया। चारों ओर से चपेटे मारकर और नखों से शरीर विदीर्ण कर वानरों ने उसको व्याकुल कर दिया॥
* देखि महा मर्कट प्रबल रावन कीन्ह बिचार।
अंतरहित होइ निमिष महुँ कृत माया बिस्तार॥100॥
Seeing the mighty monkey army closing in, Ravan devised a scheme. In an instant, he vanished from sight and spread his illusory powers across the battlefield.
वानरों को बड़ा ही प्रबल देखकर रावण ने विचार किया और अंतर्धान होकर क्षणभर में उसने माया फैलाई॥100॥
छंद :
* जब कीन्ह तेहिं पाषंड। भए प्रगट जंतु प्रचंड॥
बेताल भूत पिसाच। कर धरें धनु नाराच॥1॥
When he unleashed his illusory powers, the battlefield suddenly filled with terrifying forms, ghosts, goblins, and restless spirits appearing everywhere, many of them armed with bows and arrows, spreading fear and confusion in all directions.
जब उसने पाखंड (माया) रचा, तब भयंकर जीव प्रकट हो गए। बेताल, भूत और पिशाच हाथों में धनुष-बाण लिए प्रकट हुए!॥1॥
जोगिनि गहें करबाल। एक हाथ मनुज कपाल॥
करि सद्य सोनित पान। नाचहिं करहिं बहु गान॥2॥
The yoginis held swords in one hand and human skulls in the other, drinking fresh blood from them as they danced wildly and sang in many fierce and dreadful strains.
योगिनियाँ एक हाथ में तलवार और दूसरे हाथ में मनुष्य की खोपड़ी लिए ताजा खून पीकर नाचने और बहुत तरह के गीत गाने लगीं॥2॥
धरु मारु बोलहिं घोर। रहि पूरि धुनि चहुँ ओर॥
मुख बाइ धावहिं खान। तब लगे कीस परान॥3॥
They cried aloud, “Seize them, seize them, capture and kill,” and their voices echoed in all directions. With open mouths, they rushed forward to devour the monkeys, who fled in terror.
वे ‘पक़ड़ो, मारो’ आदि घोर शब्द बोल रही हैं। चारों ओर (सब दिशाओं में) यह ध्वनि भर गई। वे मुख फैलाकर खाने दौड़ती हैं। तब वानर भागने लगे॥3॥
जहँ जाहिं मर्कट भागि। तहँ बरत देखहिं आगि॥
भए बिकल बानर भालु। पुनि लाग बरषै बालु॥4॥
In every direction the monkeys ran, they saw blazing fires. Terrified and distressed, the monkeys and bears panicked, and then Ravan began showering them with torrents of sand.
वानर भागकर जहाँ भी जाते हैं, वहीं आग जलती देखते हैं। वानर-भालू व्याकुल हो गए। फिर रावण बालू बरसाने लगा॥4॥
जहँ तहँ थकित करि कीस। गर्जेउ बहुरि दससीस॥
लछिमन कपीस समेत। भए सकल बीर अचेत॥5॥
Having exhausted and confused the monkeys, the ten-headed Ravan roared loudly once again. Through his illusory power, Ravan made all the brave warriors, including Lakshman ji and Sugriv, appear unconscious.
वानरों को जहाँ-तहाँ थकित (शिथिल) कर रावण फिर गरजा। लक्ष्मणजी और सुग्रीव सहित सभी वीर अचेत हो गए॥5॥
हा राम हा रघुनाथ। कहि सुभट मीजहिं हाथ॥
ऐहि बिधि सकल बल तोरि। तेहिं कीन्ह कपट बहोरि॥6॥
Rubbing their hands in despair, the brave fighters cried out, “Ah, Ram ji, alas, Raghunath ji.” In this way, Ravan shattered the spirit and strength of all, and then once again resorted to another deceitful illusion.
हा राम! हा रघुनाथ पुकारते हुए श्रेष्ठ योद्धा अपने हाथ मलते (पछताते) हैं। इस प्रकार सब का बल तोड़कर रावण ने फिर दूसरी माया रची॥6॥
प्रगटेसि बिपुल हनुमान। धाए गहे पाषान॥
तिन्ह रामु घेरे जाइ। चहुँ दिसि बरूथ बनाइ॥7॥
He manifested countless Hanumans on the battlefield. Holding mountains in their hands, they rushed forward in formation, surrounding Shri Ram on every side.
उसने बहुत से हनुमान् प्रकट किए, जो पत्थर लिए दौड़े। उन्होंने चारों ओर दल बनाकर श्री रामचंद्रजी को जा घेरा॥7॥
मारहु धरहु जनि जाइ। कटकटहिं पूँछ उठाइ॥
दहँ दिसि लँगूर बिराज। तेहिं मध्य कोसलराज॥8॥
Raising their tails and gnashing their teeth, they cried, “Seize Him, kill Him, do not let Him escape.” Encircled on all sides by their tails, the Lord of the Koshal Kingdom, Shri Ram, shone resplendent in their midst.
वे पूँछ उठाकर कटकटाते हुए पुकारने लगे, ‘मारो, पकड़ो, जाने न पावे’। उनके लंगूर (पूँछ) दसों दिशाओं में शोभा दे रहे हैं और उनके बीच में कोसलराज श्री रामजी हैं॥8॥
छंद :
* तेहिं मध्य कोसलराज सुंदर स्याम तन सोभा लही।
जनु इंद्रधनुष अनेक की बर बारि तुंग तमालही॥
प्रभु देखि हरष बिषाद उर सुर बदत जय जय जय करी।
रघुबीर एकहिं तीर कोपि निमेष महुँ माया हरी॥1॥
In the midst of the long-tailed Hanumans, the Lord of the Koshal Kingdom, Shri Ram, with His bluish-hued body, stood tall like a lofty bay leaf tree surrounded by a beautiful array of rainbows. The Demigods felt both joy and sorrow in their hearts and shouted, “Victory, victory, victory!” Shri Raghuveer then flew into a rage of righteous anger and instantly dispelled the entire illusion with a single arrow.
उनके बीच में कोसलराज का सुंदर श्याम शरीर ऐसी शोभा पा रहा है, मानो ऊँचे तमाल वृक्ष के लिए अनेक इंद्रधनुषों की श्रेष्ठ बाढ़ (घेरा) बनाई गई हो। प्रभु को देखकर देवता हर्ष और विषादयुक्त हृदय से ‘जय, जय, जय’ ऐसा बोलने लगे। तब श्री रघुवीर ने क्रोध करके एक ही बाण में निमेषमात्र में रावण की सारी माया हर ली॥1॥
माया बिगत कपि भालु हरषे बिटप गिरि गहि सब फिरे।
सर निकर छाड़े राम रावन बाहु सिर पुनि महि गिरे॥
श्रीराम रावन समर चरित अनेक कल्प जो गावहीं।
सत सेष सारद निगम कबि तेउ तदपि पार न पावहीं॥2॥
As soon as the illusion vanished, the monkeys and bears rejoiced and, seizing trees and mountains, rushed back into battle. Lord Ram unleashed volleys of arrows, severing Ravan’s arms and heads, which once again fell to the ground. Tulsidas ji says, “Even if thousands of Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of Speech, the Serpent Lord Shesha, the Vedas, and countless poets were to sing for endless ages, they would still be unable to fully describe the battle between Shri Ram and Ravan…
माया दूर हो जाने पर वानर-भालू हर्षित हुए और वृक्ष तथा पर्वत ले-लेकर सब लौट पड़े। श्री रामजी ने बाणों के समूह छोड़े, जिनसे रावण के हाथ और सिर फिर कट-कटकर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े। श्री रामजी और रावण के युद्ध का चरित्र यदि सैकड़ों शेष, सरस्वती, वेद और कवि अनेक कल्पों तक गाते रहें, तो भी उसका पार नहीं पा सकते॥2॥
* ताके गुन गन कछु कहे जड़मति तुलसीदास।
जिमि निज बल अनुरूप ते माछी उड़इ अकास॥101 क॥
…I, dull-witted Tulsidas, have merely attempted to recount a few notable moments of that combat, much like a tiny fly moving through the vast sky according to its limited strength.”
उसी चरित्र के कुछ गुणगण मंदबुद्धि तुलसीदास ने कहे हैं, जैसे मक्खी भी अपने पुरुषार्थ के अनुसार आकाश में उड़ती है॥101 क॥
काटे सिर भुज बार बहु मरत न भट लंकेस।
प्रभु क्रीड़त सुर सिद्ध मुनि ब्याकुल देखि कलेस॥101 ख॥
Even after his heads and arms were severed repeatedly, the valiant King of Lanka did not die. While it was merely a divine play for Lord Ram, the Demigods, Sages, and realized Saints became anxious, fearing that Lord Ram might be enduring distress.
सिर और भुजाएँ बहुत बार काटी गईं। फिर भी वीर रावण मरता नहीं। प्रभु तो खेल कर रहे हैं, परन्तु मुनि, सिद्ध और देवता उस क्लेश को देखकर (प्रभु को क्लेश पाते समझकर) व्याकुल हैं॥101 ख॥
* काटत बढ़हिं सीस समुदाई। जिमि प्रति लाभ लोभ अधिकाई॥
मरइ न रिपु श्रम भयउ बिसेषा। राम बिभीषन तन तब देखा॥1॥
As soon as his heads were cut off, clusters of new ones sprang forth, just as greed grows with every fresh gain. When the enemy could not be slain despite a long and relentless attempts, Shri Ram turned His gaze toward Vibhishan.
काटते ही सिरों का समूह बढ़ जाता है, जैसे प्रत्येक लाभ पर लोभ बढ़ता है। शत्रु मरता नहीं और परिश्रम बहुत हुआ। तब श्री रामचंद्रजी ने विभीषण की ओर देखा॥1॥
उमा काल मर जाकीं ईछा। सो प्रभु जन कर प्रीति परीछा॥
सुनु सरबग्य चराचर नायक। प्रनतपाल सुर मुनि सुखदायक॥2॥
Lord Shiv says to Goddess Parvati, “Uma, the Lord, by whose will even Death itself meets death, was only testing the devotion of His servant.” Vibhishan then spoke, “Listen, O’ All-knowing Lord, ruler of the animate and inanimate worlds, protector of the suppliant and delight of the Demigods and Sages,…
(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे उमा! जिसकी इच्छा मात्र से काल भी मर जाता है, वही प्रभु सेवक की प्रीति की परीक्षा ले रहे हैं। (विभीषणजी ने कहा-) हे सर्वज्ञ! हे चराचर के स्वामी! हे शरणागत के पालन करने वाले! हे देवता और मुनियों को सुख देने वाले! सुनिए-॥2॥
नाभिकुंड पियूष बस याकें। नाथ जिअत रावनु बल ताकें॥
सुनत बिभीषन बचन कृपाला। हरषि गहे कर बान कराला॥3॥
…nectar resides in the reservoir of Ravan’s navel, and it is because of this that Ravan continues to survive.” Hearing Vibhishan’s words, the all-merciful Lord was pleased and took fearsome arrows in His hand.
इसके नाभिकुंड में अमृत का निवास है। हे नाथ! रावण उसी के बल पर जीता है। विभीषण के वचन सुनते ही कृपालु श्री रघुनाथजी ने हर्षित होकर हाथ में विकराल बाण लिए॥3॥
असुभ होन लागे तब नाना। रोवहिं खर सृकाल बहु स्वाना॥
बोलहिं खग जग आरति हेतू। प्रगट भए नभ जहँ तहँ केतू॥4॥
At that very moment, many dreadful omens appeared. Donkeys, jackals, and dogs began to howl, birds shrieked as if warning the world of impending doom, and the sky filled with comets scattered in every direction.
उस समय नाना प्रकार के अपशकुन होने लगे। बहुत से गदहे, स्यार और कुत्ते रोने लगे। जगत् के दुःख (अशुभ) को सूचित करने के लिए पक्षी बोलने लगे। आकाश में जहाँ-तहाँ केतु (पुच्छल तारे) प्रकट हो गए॥4॥
दस दिसि दाह होन अति लागा। भयउ परब बिनु रबि उपरागा॥
मंदोदरि उर कंपति भारी। प्रतिमा स्रवहिं नयन मग बारी॥5॥
Fire blazed in all ten directions of the Universe, and an untimely solar eclipse darkened the sky. Mandodari’s heart trembled violently, and the idols shed tears from their eyes, as if the world itself sensed the approaching calamity.
दसों दिशाओं में अत्यंत दाह होने लगा (आग लगने लगी) बिना ही पर्व (योग) के सूर्यग्रहण होने लगा। मंदोदरी का हृदय बहुत काँपने लगा। मूर्तियाँ नेत्र मार्ग से जल बहाने लगीं॥5॥
छंद :
* प्रतिमा रुदहिं पबिपात नभ अति बात बह डोलति मही।
बरषहिं बलाहक रुधिर कच रज असुभ अति सक को कही॥
उतपात अमित बिलोकि नभ सुर बिकल बोलहिं जय जए।
सुर सभय जानि कृपाल रघुपति चाप सर जोरत भए॥
The idols wept, lightning flashed, and thunder roared across the sky. Violent winds swept through the quarters, the Earth trembled, and clouds poured down blood, hair, and dust. Who could ever recount such dreadful omens? Beholding this boundless devastation, the Demigods watching from the Heavens shouted, “Victory, victory, victory,” and seeing their distress, the gracious Lord of the Raghus calmly fitted many arrows to His bow.
मूर्तियाँ रोने लगीं, आकाश से वज्रपात होने लगे, अत्यंत प्रचण्ड वायु बहने लगी, पृथ्वी हिलने लगी, बादल रक्त, बाल और धूल की वर्षा करने लगे। इस प्रकार इतने अधिक अमंगल होने लगे कि उनको कौन कह सकता है? अपरिमित उत्पात देखकर आकाश में देवता व्याकुल होकर जय-जय पुकार उठे। देवताओं को भयभीत जानकर कृपालु श्री रघुनाथजी धनुष पर बाण सन्धान करने लगे।
* खैंचि सरासन श्रवन लगि छाड़े सर एकतीस।
रघुनायक सायक चले मानहुँ काल फनीस॥102॥
Drawing the bow-string all the way to His ear, Shri Raghunayak released thirty-one arrows that shot forth like deadly serpents of Death.
कानों तक धनुष को खींचकर श्री रघुनाथजी ने इकतीस बाण छोड़े। वे श्री रामचंद्रजी के बाण ऐसे चले मानो कालसर्प हों॥102॥
* सायक एक नाभि सर सोषा। अपर लगे भुज सिर करि रोषा॥
लै सिर बाहु चले नाराचा। सिर भुज हीन रुंड महि नाचा॥1॥
One arrow dried up the reservoir of nectar in Ravan’s navel, while the others, in a fierce assault, severed his heads and arms, carrying them away and leaving his headless, armless trunk writhing and dancing upon the battlefield.
एक बाण ने नाभि के अमृत कुंड को सोख लिया। दूसरे तीस बाण कोप करके उसके सिरों और भुजाओं में लगे। बाण सिरों और भुजाओं को लेकर चले। सिरों और भुजाओं से रहित रुण्ड (धड़) पृथ्वी पर नाचने लगा॥1॥
धरनि धसइ धर धाव प्रचंडा। तब सर हति प्रभु कृत दुइ खंडा॥
गर्जेउ मरत घोर रव भारी। कहाँ रामु रन हतौं पचारी॥2॥
The Earth sank beneath the weight of Ravan’s raging trunk as it charged about wildly, until the Lord split it into two pieces with a single arrow. With a dreadful final roar, Ravan cried, “Where is Ram? I will challenge Him and kill Him in battle.” With these last words, he met his end.
धड़ प्रचण्ड वेग से दौड़ता है, जिससे धरती धँसने लगी। तब प्रभु ने बाण मारकर उसके दो टुकड़े कर दिए। मरते समय रावण बड़े घोर शब्द से गरजकर बोला- राम कहाँ हैं? मैं ललकारकर उनको युद्ध में मारूँ!॥2॥
डोली भूमि गिरत दसकंधर। छुभित सिंधु सरि दिग्गज भूधर॥
धरनि परेउ द्वौ खंड बढ़ाई। चापि भालु मर्कट समुदाई॥3॥
The Earth shook as the ten-headed Ravan fell to the ground. The oceans and rivers churned, the elephants guarding the ten directions trembled, and the mountains quaked. As he collapsed, the two halves of his body spread out, crushing many monkeys and bears beneath their weight.
रावण के गिरते ही पृथ्वी हिल गई। समुद्र, नदियाँ, दिशाओं के हाथी और पर्वत क्षुब्ध हो उठे। रावण धड़ के दोनों टुकड़ों को फैलाकर भालू और वानरों के समुदाय को दबाता हुआ पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा॥3॥
मंदोदरि आगें भुज सीसा। धरि सर चले जहाँ जगदीसा॥
प्रबिसे सब निषंग महुँ जाई। देखि सुरन्ह दुंदुभीं बजाई॥4॥
After casting Ravan’s heads and arms before Mandodari, the arrows returned to Shri Ram, the Lord of the Cosmos. One by one, they re-entered His quiver. Witnessing this wondrous sight, the Demigods rejoiced and began beating kettledrums in celebration.
रावण की भुजाओं और सिरों को मंदोदरी के सामने रखकर रामबाण वहाँ चले, जहाँ जगदीश्वर श्री रामजी थे। सब बाण जाकर तरकस में प्रवेश कर गए। यह देखकर देवताओं ने नगाड़े बजाए॥4॥
तासु तेज समान प्रभु आनन। हरषे देखि संभु चतुरानन॥
जय जय धुनि पूरी ब्रह्मंडा। जय रघुबीर प्रबल भुजदंडा॥5॥
Ravan’s subtle body entered the Lord’s mouth, and on witnessing this wondrous sight, Lord Shambu and the four-faced Lord Brahma rejoiced. The entire Cosmos resounded with triumphant chants of “Victory, victory, glory of Shri Raghuveer, the Lord with mighty and unconquerable arms.”
रावण का तेज प्रभु के मुख में समा गया। यह देखकर शिवजी और ब्रह्माजी हर्षित हुए। ब्रह्माण्डभर में जय-जय की ध्वनि भर गई। प्रबल भुजदण्डों वाले श्री रघुवीर की जय हो॥5॥
बरषहिं सुमन देव मुनि बृंदा। जय कृपाल जय जयति मुकुंदा॥6॥
Hosts of Demigods and Sages showered flowers from the Heavens, exclaiming, “Glory to the all-merciful Lord! Victory, victory to Lord Mukunda, the giver of both worldly joy and ultimate liberation…
देवता और मुनियों के समूह फूल बरसाते हैं और कहते हैं- कृपालु की जय हो, मुकुन्द की जय हो, जय हो!॥6॥
छंद :
* जय कृपा कंद मुकुंद द्वंद हरन सरन सुखप्रद प्रभो।
खल दल बिदारन परम कारन कारुनीक सदा बिभो॥
सुर सुमन बरषहिं हरष संकुल बाज दुंदुभि गहगही।
संग्राम अंगन राम अंग अनंग बहु सोभा लही॥1॥
…Glory to the fountain of mercy, the bestower of bliss and liberation, the One who dispels all fear born of duality (such as birth and death, joy and sorrow, attachment and aversion), the giver of delight to the suppliant, the Almighty, the destroyer of vile hosts, the primal cause, ever compassionate, all-pervading, and the Supreme Lord.” As the Demigods showered flowers, their kettledrums thundered in celebration, and on the battlefield the radiant limbs of Lord Ram shone with a beauty surpassing that of countless Cupids.
हे कृपा के कंद! हे मोक्षदाता मुकुन्द! हे (राग-द्वेष, हर्ष-शोक, जन्म-मृत्यु आदि) द्वंद्वों के हरने वाले! हे शरणागत को सुख देने वाले प्रभो! हे दुष्ट दल को विदीर्ण करने वाले! हे कारणों के भी परम कारण! हे सदा करुणा करने वाले! हे सर्वव्यापक विभो! आपकी जय हो। देवता हर्ष में भरे हुए पुष्प बरसाते हैं, घमाघम नगाड़े बज रहे हैं। रणभूमि में श्री रामचंद्रजी के अंगों ने बहुत से कामदेवों की शोभा प्राप्त की॥1॥
सिर जटा मुकुट प्रसून बिच बिच अति मनोहर राजहीं।
जनु नीलगिरि पर तड़ित पटल समेत उडुगन भ्राजहीं॥
भुजदंड सर कोदंड फेरत रुधिर कन तन अति बने।
जनु रायमुनीं तमाल पर बैठीं बिपुल सुख आपने॥2॥
The crown of matted hair upon Lord Ram’s head, adorned with lovely flowers, looked supremely enchanting, as if stars and flashes of lightning were adorning the peak of a blue mountain. Shri Ram gently moved His bow and arrows between His arms, and tiny specks of blood upon His divine body appeared like a flock of red avadavat birds joyfully perched on a bay-leaf tree, each absorbed in its own delight.
सिर पर जटाओं का मुकुट है, जिसके बीच में अत्यंत मनोहर पुष्प शोभा दे रहे हैं। मानो नीले पर्वत पर बिजली के समूह सहित नक्षत्र सुशोभित हो रहे हैं। श्री रामजी अपने भुजदण्डों से बाण और धनुष फिरा रहे हैं। शरीर पर रुधिर के कण अत्यंत सुंदर लगते हैं। मानो तमाल के वृक्ष पर बहुत सी ललमुनियाँ चिड़ियाँ अपने महान् सुख में मग्न हुई निश्चल बैठी हों॥2॥
* कृपादृष्टि करि बृष्टि प्रभु अभय किए सुर बृंद।
भालु कीस सब हरषे जय सुख धाम मुकुंद॥103॥
With showers of His merciful glance, the Lord dispelled the fears of the Demigods. The monkeys and bears rejoiced and proclaimed, “Victory to the source of bliss, the bestower of happiness and liberation.”
प्रभु श्री रामचंद्रजी ने कृपा दृष्टि की वर्षा करके देव समूह को निर्भय कर दिया। वानर-भालू सब हर्षित हुए और सुखधाम मुकुन्द की जय हो, ऐसा पुकारने लगे॥103॥
* पति सिर देखत मंदोदरी। मुरुछित बिकल धरनि खसि परी॥
जुबति बृंद रोवत उठि धाईं। तेहि उठाइ रावन पहिं आईं॥1॥
The moment Mandodari saw Ravan’s severed heads, she fainted in grief and fell to the ground. Ravan’s other wives rose in anguish, and after lifting and supporting Mandodari, they all hurried to the battlefield where Ravan’s body lay.
पति के सिर देखते ही मंदोदरी व्याकुल और मूर्च्छित होकर धरती पर गिर पड़ी। स्त्रियाँ रोती हुई दौड़ीं और उस (मंदोदरी) को उठाकर रावण के पास आईं॥1॥
पति गति देखि ते करहिं पुकारा। छूटे कच नहिं बपुष सँभारा॥
उर ताड़ना करहिं बिधि नाना। रोवत करहिं प्रताप बखाना॥2॥
Seeing the condition of their husband, they wailed aloud, their hair falling loose as they lost all awareness of themselves. Beating their chests in anguish, they lamented in many ways, recalling and proclaiming his former glories.
पति की दशा देखकर वे पुकार-पुकारकर रोने लगीं। उनके बाल खुल गए, देह की संभाल नहीं रही। वे अनेकों प्रकार से छाती पीटती हैं और रोती हुई रावण के प्रताप का बखान करती हैं॥2॥
तव बल नाथ डोल नित धरनी। तेज हीन पावक ससि तरनी॥
सेष कमठ सहि सकहिं न भारा। सो तनु भूमि परेउ भरि छारा॥3॥
They lamented, “O’ Lord, under the weight of your body the Earth once trembled, and the splendour of the Demigods, Fire, Moon, and the Sun grew dim before you. Even Sheshnag (the Serpent God), and the divine Tortoise could scarcely bear your burden, and yet today that very body of yours lies upon the ground, covered in dust…
(वे कहती हैं-) हे नाथ! तुम्हारे बल से पृथ्वी सदा काँपती रहती थी। अग्नि, चंद्रमा और सूर्य तुम्हारे सामने तेजहीन थे। शेष और कच्छप भी जिसका भार नहीं सह सकते थे, वही तुम्हारा शरीर आज धूल में भरा हुआ पृथ्वी पर पड़ा है!॥3॥
बरुन कुबेर सुरेस समीरा। रन सन्मुख धरि काहुँ न धीरा॥
भुजबल जितेहु काल जम साईं। आजु परेहु अनाथ की नाईं॥4॥
…The Demigods Varun (the God of Water), Kuber (the God of Wealth), Indra (the Lord of the Demigods), and even Pawan (the Wind God) never had the courage to face you on the battlefield. O’ Lord, with the might of your arms you conquered even Death itself and Yam (the judge of the afterworld), and yet today you lie here like an orphan…
वरुण, कुबेर, इंद्र और वायु, इनमें से किसी ने भी रण में तुम्हारे सामने धैर्य धारण नहीं किया। हे स्वामी! तुमने अपने भुजबल से काल और यमराज को भी जीत लिया था। वही तुम आज अनाथ की तरह पड़े हो॥4॥
जगत बिदित तुम्हारि प्रभुताई। सुत परिजन बल बरनि न जाई॥
राम बिमुख अस हाल तुम्हारा। रहा न कोउ कुल रोवनिहारा॥5॥
…Your greatness was known throughout the world, and even your sons and kinsmen possessed boundless strength. This tragic fate has come from your enmity toward Shri Ram, and today there is no one left in your clan to mourn your death…
तुम्हारी प्रभुता जगत् भर में प्रसिद्ध है। तुम्हारे पुत्रों और कुटुम्बियों के बल का हाय! वर्णन ही नहीं हो सकता। श्री रामचंद्रजी के विमुख होने से तुम्हारी ऐसी दुर्दशा हुई कि आज कुल में कोई रोने वाला भी न रह गया॥5॥
तव बस बिधि प्रचंड सब नाथा। सभय दिसिप नित नावहिं माथा॥
अब तव सिर भुज जंबुक खाहीं। राम बिमुख यह अनुचित नाहीं॥6॥
…O’ Lord, the mighty creation of Lord Brahma lay under your command, and the Guardians of all ten directions trembled before you, bowing their heads in fear each day, yet now your severed heads and arms are being devoured by jackals, and yet this fate is not unfitting for one who stood in hostility toward Shri Ram.
हे नाथ! विधाता की सारी सृष्टि तुम्हारे वश में थी। लोकपाल सदा भयभीत होकर तुमको मस्तक नवाते थे, किन्तु हाय! अब तुम्हारे सिर और भुजाओं को गीदड़ खा रहे हैं। राम विमुख के लिए ऐसा होना अनुचित भी नहीं है (अर्थात् उचित ही है)॥6॥
काल बिबस पति कहा न माना। अग जग नाथु मनुज करि जाना॥7॥
…O’ Beloved husband, doomed by your own fate, you listened to no one and regarded the Lord of all creation, both animate and inanimate, as nothing more than a mere human…
हे पति! काल के पूर्ण वश में होने से तुमने (किसी का) कहना नहीं माना और चराचर के नाथ परमात्मा को मनुष्य करके जाना॥7॥

* जान्यो मनुज करि दनुज कानन दहन पावक हरि स्वयं।
जेहि नमत सिव ब्रह्मादि सुर पिय भजेहु नहिं करुनामयं॥
आजन्म ते परद्रोह रत पापौघमय तव तनु अयं।
तुम्हहू दियो निज धाम राम नमामि ब्रह्म निरामयं॥
…You mistook Lord Hari Himself for a mere human, though He is the blazing fire destined to consume the forest of the demon race. To Him bow Lord Shiv, Lord Brahma, and all the Demigods, yet, O’ Beloved husband, you never worshipped that boundless ocean of mercy, Shri Ram. From the very beginning, your body was engaged in harming others and committing sinful deeds, and yet the Supreme Lord, beyond all material qualities, has granted you His own divine abode. दैत्य रूपी वन को जलाने के लिए अग्निस्वरूप साक्षात् श्री हरि को तुमने मनुष्य करके जाना। शिव और ब्रह्मा आदि देवता जिनको नमस्कार करते हैं, उन करुणामय भगवान् को हे प्रियतम! तुमने नहीं भजा। तुम्हारा यह शरीर जन्म से ही दूसरों से द्रोह करने में तत्पर तथा पाप समूहमय रहा! इतने पर भी जिन निर्विकार ब्रह्म श्री रामजी ने तुमको अपना धाम दिया, उनको मैं नमस्कार करती हूँ।
* अहह नाथ रघुनाथ सम कृपासिंधु नहिं आन।
जोगि बृंद दुर्लभ गति तोहि दीन्हि भगवान॥104॥
…Ah my lord, there is none as compassionate as Shri Raghunath, who has granted you a state that even the most realized Sages find difficult to attain.”
अहह! नाथ! श्री रघुनाथजी के समान कृपा का समुद्र दूसरा कोई नहीं है, जिन भगवान् ने तुमको वह गति दी, जो योगि समाज को भी दुर्लभ है॥104॥
* मंदोदरी बचन सुनि काना। सुर मुनि सिद्ध सबन्हि सुख माना॥
अज महेस नारद सनकादी। जे मुनिबर परमारथबादी॥1॥

मंदोदरी के वचन कानों में सुनकर देवता, मुनि और सिद्ध सभी ने सुख माना। ब्रह्मा, महादेव, नारद और सनकादि तथा और भी जो परमार्थवादी (परमात्मा के तत्त्व को जानने और कहने वाले) श्रेष्ठ मुनि थे॥1॥
भरि लोचन रघुपतिहि निहारी। प्रेम मगन सब भए सुखारी॥
रुदन करत देखीं सब नारी। गयउ बिभीषनु मनु दुख भारी॥2॥

वे सभी श्री रघुनाथजी को नेत्र भरकर निरखकर प्रेममग्न हो गए और अत्यंत सुखी हुए। अपने घर की सब स्त्रियों को रोती हुई देखकर विभीषणजी के मन में बड़ा भारी दुःख हुआ और वे उनके पास गए॥2॥
बंधु दसा बिलोकि दुख कीन्हा। तब प्रभु अनुजहि आयसु दीन्हा॥
लछिमन तेहि बहु बिधि समुझायो। बहुरि बिभीषन प्रभु पहिं आयो॥3॥
…and on beholding the condition of his brother, Vibhishan too was overcome with grief. Then the Lord instructed His younger brother, Lakshman ji, who comforted and consoled Vibhishan in many ways, after which Vibhishan returned to the Lord.
उन्होंने भाई की दशा देखकर दुःख किया। तब प्रभु श्री रामजी ने छोटे भाई को आज्ञा दी (कि जाकर विभीषण को धैर्य बँधाओ)। लक्ष्मणजी ने उन्हें बहुत प्रकार से समझाया। तब विभीषण प्रभु के पास लौट आए॥3॥
कृपादृष्टि प्रभु ताहि बिलोका। करहु क्रिया परिहरि सब सोका॥
कीन्हि क्रिया प्रभु आयसु मानी। बिधिवत देस काल जियँ जानी॥4॥
The Lord cast His gracious glance upon Vibhishan and said, “Now perform all the last rites of Ravan and lay aside all sorrow.” Obeying Shri Ram’s command, Vibhishan carried out the final rites with due reverence, in accordance with the prescribed rituals, the proper time, and the appropriate place.
प्रभु ने उनको कृपापूर्ण दृष्टि से देखा (और कहा-) सब शोक त्यागकर रावण की अंत्येष्टि क्रिया करो। प्रभु की आज्ञा मानकर और हृदय में देश और काल का विचार करके विभीषणजी ने विधिपूर्वक सब क्रिया की॥4॥
