सोक कनकलोचन मति छोनी। हरी बिमल गुन गन जगजोनी॥
भरत बिबेक बराहँ बिसाला। अनायास उधरी तेहि काला॥2॥
Sorrow, in the form of Hiranyaaksh with golden eyes, swallowed the Earth, which here symbolized the collective wisdom of the assembly – the very womb of the world that gives rise to pure virtues. At that very moment, Bharat ji’s wisdom took the form of a mighty Varaha (boar incarnation of the Lord) and, without the slightest effort, rescued that Earth by destroying the demon of grief.
शोक रूपी हिरण्याक्ष ने (सारी सभा की) बुद्धि रूपी पृथ्वी को हर लिया जो विमल गुण समूह रूपी जगत की योनि (उत्पन्न करने वाली) थी। भरतजी के विवेक रूपी विशाल वराह (वराह रूप धारी भगवान) ने (शोक रूपी हिरण्याक्ष को नष्ट कर) बिना ही परिश्रम उसका उद्धार कर दिया!॥2॥
करि प्रनामु सब कहँ कर जोरे। रामु राउ गुर साधु निहोरे॥
छमब आजु अति अनुचित मोरा। कहउँ बदन मृदु बचन कठोरा॥3॥
With folded hands and deep reverence, Bharat bowed before Shri Ram, King Janak, Guru Vashishth, and the assembled Sages. He pleaded, “Forgive me today for my most improper conduct. From this immature mouth of mine, I must now speak words that may sound harsh.”
भरतजी ने प्रणाम करके सबके प्रति हाथ जोड़े तथा श्री रामचन्द्रजी, राजा जनकजी, गुरु वशिष्ठजी और साधु-संत सबसे विनती की और कहा- आज मेरे इस अत्यन्त अनुचित बर्ताव को क्षमा कीजिएगा। मैं कोमल (छोटे) मुख से कठोर (धृष्टतापूर्ण) वचन कह रहा हूँ॥3॥
हियँ सुमिरी सारदा सुहाई। मानस तें मुख पंकज आई॥
बिमल बिबेक धरम नय साली। भरत भारती मंजु मराली॥4॥
Bharat ji then invoked the gracious Goddess Sharda within his heart, and She arose gracefully from the Mansarovar lake of his mind to dwell upon his lotus-like lips. His words shone with pure wisdom, righteousness, and prudence, like a swan that effortlessly separates virtue from vice.
फिर उन्होंने हृदय में सुहावनी सरस्वती का स्मरण किया। वे मानस से (उनके मन रूपी मानसरोवर से) उनके मुखारविंद पर आ विराजीं। निर्मल विवेक, धर्म और नीति से युक्त भरतजी की वाणी सुंदर हंसिनी (के समान गुण-दोष का विवेचन करने वाली) है॥4॥
* निरखि बिबेक बिलोचनन्हि सिथिल सनेहँ समाजु।
करि प्रनामु बोले भरतु सुमिरि सीय रघुराजु॥297॥

विवेक के नेत्रों से सारे समाज को प्रेम से शिथिल देख, सबको प्रणाम कर, श्री सीताजी और श्री रघुनाथजी का स्मरण करके भरतजी बोले-॥297॥
* प्रभु पितु मातु सुहृद गुर स्वामी। पूज्य परम हित अंतरजामी॥
सरल सुसाहिबु सील निधानू। प्रनतपाल सर्बग्य सुजानू॥1॥

हे प्रभु! आप पिता, माता, सुहृद् (मित्र), गुरु, स्वामी, पूज्य, परम हितैषी और अन्तर्यामी हैं। सरल हृदय, श्रेष्ठ मालिक, शील के भंडार, शरणागत की रक्षा करने वाले, सर्वज्ञ, सुजान,॥1॥
समरथ सरनागत हितकारी। गुनगाहकु अवगुन अघ हारी॥
स्वामि गोसाँइहि सरिस गोसाईं। मोहि समान मैं साइँ ईं॥2॥
…all-capable, and gracious to those who surrender to You. You delight in the virtues of others (never seeing their faults) and dispel their shortcomings and sins. O’ Lord of the senses, if there is anyone equal to You, it is You alone. And one who is disloyal to their master, such a person is none other than me…
समर्थ, शरणागत का हित करने वाले, गुणों का आदर करने वाले और अवगुणों तथा पापों को हरने वाले हैं। हे गोसाईं! आप सरीखे स्वामी आप ही हैं और स्वामी के साथ द्रोह करने में मेरे समान मैं ही हूँ॥2॥
प्रभु पितु बचन मोह बस पेली। आयउँ इहाँ समाजु सकेली॥
जग भल पोच ऊँच अरु नीचू। अमिअ अमरपद माहुरु मीचू॥3॥
…O’ Lord, blinded by my attachments, I disregarded the command of my Lord (You) and my father, and brought everyone here. In this world, there is good and evil, high and low, nectar and immortality, poison and death…
मैं मोहवश प्रभु (आप) के और पिताजी के वचनों का उल्लंघन कर और समाज बटोरकर यहाँ आया हूँ। जगत में भले-बुरे, ऊँचे और नीचे, अमृत और अमर पद (देवताओं का पद), विष और मृत्यु आदि-॥3॥
राम रजाइ मेट मन माहीं। देखा सुना कतहुँ कोउ नाहीं॥
सो मैं सब बिधि कीन्हि ढिठाई। प्रभु मानी सनेह सेवकाई॥4॥
…Yet I have never seen nor heard of anyone who would even dare to think of disobeying Your command. But I, in my audacity, failed to follow Your order in every way possible. And still, O’ Lord, You have graciously accepted my actions as though they were an offering of love and service to You…
किसी को भी कहीं ऐसा नहीं देखा-सुना जो मन में भी श्री रामचन्द्रजी (आप) की आज्ञा को मेट दे। मैंने सब प्रकार से वही ढिठाई की, परन्तु प्रभु ने उस ढिठाई को स्नेह और सेवा मान लिया!॥4॥
* कृपाँ भलाईं आपनी नाथ कीन्ह भल मोर।
दूषन भे भूषन सरिस सुजसु चारु चहुँ ओर॥298॥
…Through Your mercy and grace, my Lord, You have blessed me with goodness. My shortcomings have been turned into virtues, and my humble name now shines with honour far and wide…
हे नाथ! आपने अपनी कृपा और भलाई से मेरा भला किया, जिससे मेरे दूषण (दोष) भी भूषण (गुण) के समान हो गए और चारों ओर मेरा सुंदर यश छा गया॥298॥
* राउरि रीति सुबानि बड़ाई। जगत बिदित निगमागम गाई॥
कूर कुटिल खल कुमति कलंकी। नीच निसील निरीस निसंकी॥1॥
…Your ways, sweet words, and glory are celebrated throughout the world and praised in the Vedas and the sacred Scriptures. Even the cruel, deceitful, wretched, evil-minded, sinful, lowly, arrogant, faithless, and those who feel no restraint, fear, or hesitation in committing wrongful deeds…
हे नाथ! आपकी रीति और सुंदर स्वभाव की बड़ाई जगत में प्रसिद्ध है और वेद-शास्त्रों ने गाई है। जो क्रूर, कुटिल, दुष्ट, कुबुद्धि, कलंकी, नीच, शीलरहित, निरीश्वरवादी (नास्तिक) और निःशंक (निडर) है॥1॥
तेउ सुनि सरन सामुहें आए। सकृत प्रनामु किहें अपनाए॥
देखि दोष कबहुँ न उर आने। सुनि गुन साधु समाज बखाने॥2॥
…are known to be embraced by You as Your own the very moment they seek refuge, even if it is only by bowing to You once. You have never kept their faults in Your heart, even when witnessed with Your own eyes. Instead, upon discovering even a trace of their virtues, You praise them in the assembly of the noble and saintly…
उन्हें भी आपने शरण में सम्मुख आया सुनकर एक बार प्रणाम करने पर ही अपना लिया। उन (शरणागतों) के दोषों को देखकर भी आप कभी हृदय में नहीं लाए और उनके गुणों को सुनकर साधुओं के समाज में उनका बखान किया॥2॥
को साहिब सेवकहि नेवाजी। आपु समाज साज सब साजी॥
निज करतूति न समुझिअ सपनें। सेवक सकुच सोचु उर अपनें॥3॥
…There is truly no one as magnanimous as You. You graciously bestow far more than Your devotees could ever desire, granting them every essential blessing. Yet, in Your humility, You never seek recognition for Your kindness, ever mindful of the feelings of Your servants so that they may not feel the slightest embarrassment…
ऐसा सेवक पर कृपा करने वाला स्वामी कौन है, जो आप ही सेवक का सारा साज-सामान सज दे (उसकी सारी आवश्यकताओं को पूर्ण कर दे) और स्वप्न में भी अपनी कोई करनी न समझकर (अर्थात मैंने सेवक के लिए कुछ किया है, ऐसा न जानकर) उलटा सेवक को संकोच होगा, इसका सोच अपने हृदय में रखे!॥3॥
सो गोसाइँ नहिं दूसर कोपी। भुजा उठाइ कहउँ पन रोपी॥
पसु नाचत सुक पाठ प्रबीना। गुन गति नट पाठक आधीना॥4॥
…O’ Lord of the senses, with my arm raised in solemn truth, I declare that no master can ever be compared to You. Monkeys and bears may be trained to dance, and parrots may be taught to repeat words, yet their abilities will always remain dependent on their masters…
मैं भुजा उठाकर और प्रण रोपकर (बड़े जोर के साथ) कहता हूँ, ऐसा स्वामी आपके सिवा दूसरा कोई नहीं है। (बंदर आदि) पशु नाचते और तोते (सीखे हुए) पाठ में प्रवीण हो जाते हैं, परन्तु तोते का (पाठ प्रवीणता रूप) गुण और पशु के नाचने की गति (क्रमशः) पढ़ाने वाले और नचाने वाले के अधीन है॥4॥
* यों सुधारि सनमानि जन किए साधु सिरमोर।
को कृपाल बिनु पालिहै बिरिदावलि बरजोर॥299॥
…In the same way, You transform the flaws of Your devotees into virtues and raise them to the highest rank among the holy. O’ Ocean of Mercy, who else but You can so powerfully uphold the vow of granting grace to those who seek refuge?…
इस प्रकार अपने सेवकों की (बिगड़ी) बात सुधारकर और सम्मान देकर आपने उन्हें साधुओं का शिरोमणि बना दिया। कृपालु (आप) के सिवा अपनी विरदावली का और कौन जबर्दस्ती (हठपूर्वक) पालन करेगा?॥299॥
* सोक सनेहँ कि बाल सुभाएँ। आयउँ लाइ रजायसु बाएँ॥
तबहुँ कृपाल हेरि निज ओरा। सबहि भाँति भल मानेउ मोरा॥1॥
…Driven by sorrow, love, or perhaps sheer childishness, I came here without regard for royal commands. Yet, true to Your boundless nature, my compassionate Lord, You have graciously accepted me in every way…
मैं शोक से या स्नेह से या बालक स्वभाव से आज्ञा को बाएँ लाकर (न मानकर) चला आया, तो भी कृपालु स्वामी (आप) ने अपनी ओर देखकर सभी प्रकार से मेरा भला ही माना (मेरे इस अनुचित कार्य को अच्छा ही समझा)॥1॥
देखेउँ पाय सुमंगल मूला। जानेउँ स्वामि सहज अनुकूला।
बड़ें समाज बिलोकेउँ भागू। बड़ीं चूक साहिब अनुरागू॥2॥
…I looked upon Your feet, the fountain of all blessings, and understood that my Lord is naturally gracious toward me. In this great assembly, I see my own good fortune, for even after committing such a grave mistake, You still remain pleased with me…
मैंने सुंदर मंगलों के मूल आपके चरणों का दर्शन किया और यह जान लिया कि स्वामी मुझ पर स्वभाव से ही अनुकूल हैं। इस बड़े समाज में अपने भाग्य को देखा कि इतनी बड़ी चूक होने पर भी स्वामी का मुझ पर कितना अनुराग है!॥2॥
कृपा अनुग्रहु अंगु अघाई। कीन्हि कृपानिधि सब अधिकाई॥
राखा मोर दुलार गोसाईं। अपनें सील सुभायँ भलाई॥3॥
…My all-merciful Lord has showered me with kindness and compassion in every way, far beyond what I could ever deserve. O’ Lord of the senses, through Your humility, benevolence, and goodness, You have nurtured me…
कृपानिधान ने मुझ पर सांगोपांग भरपेट कृपा और अनुग्रह, सब अधिक ही किए हैं (अर्थात मैं जिसके जरा भी लायक नहीं था, उतनी अधिक सर्वांगपूर्ण कृपा आपने मुझ पर की है)। हे गोसाईं! आपने अपने शील, स्वभाव और भलाई से मेरा दुलार रखा॥3॥
नाथ निपट मैं कीन्हि ढिठाई। स्वामि समाज सकोच बिहाई॥
अबिनय बिनय जथारुचि बानी। छमिहि देउ अति आरति जानी॥4॥
…O’ Lord, I acted with audacity, disregarding the feelings of my Lord and this sacred assembly. I spoke both courteous and discourteous words as I pleased. Yet, trusting in Your compassion and knowing my deep remorse, I am certain that my Lord will forgive me…
हे नाथ! मैंने स्वामी और समाज के संकोच को छोड़कर अविनय या विनय भरी जैसी रुचि हुई वैसी ही वाणी कहकर सर्वथा ढिठाई की है। हे देव! मेरे आर्तभाव (आतुरता) को जानकर आप क्षमा करेंगे॥4॥
* सुहृद सुजान सुसाहिबहि बहुत कहब बड़ि खोरि।
आयसु देइअ देव अब सबइ सुधारी मोरि॥300॥
…To speak excessively before a true well-wisher, all-wise and compassionate master, is a grave mistake. O’ Lord, You have corrected all my faults and fulfilled my wishes. Now, kindly grant me Your command…
सुहृद् (बिना ही हेतु के हित करने वाले), बुद्धिमान और श्रेष्ठ मालिक से बहुत कहना बड़ा अपराध है, इसलिए हे देव! अब मुझे आज्ञा दीजिए, आपने मेरी सभी बात सुधार दी॥300॥
* प्रभु पद पदुम पराग ई। सत्य सुकृत सुख सीवँ सुहाई॥
सो करि कहउँ हिए अपने की। रुचि जागत सोवत सपने की॥1॥
…Invoking the sacred dust of the Lord’s lotus feet, the very limit of truth, virtue, and bliss, I reveal the heartfelt longing that abides within me, whether awake, asleep, or in dreams…
प्रभु (आप) के चरणकमलों की रज, जो सत्य, सुकृत (पुण्य) और सुख की सुहावनी सीमा (अवधि) है, उसकी दुहाई करके मैं अपने हृदय को जागते, सोते और स्वप्न में भी बनी रहने वाली रुचि (इच्छा) कहता हूँ॥1॥
सहज सनेहँ स्वामि सेवकाई। स्वारथ छल फल चारि बिहाई॥
अग्यासम न सुसाहिब सेवा। सो प्रसादु जन पावै देवा॥2॥
…That longing is to renounce deceit, selfishness, and even the four pursuits of life (wealth, righteousness, desire, and liberation), and to serve the Lord with pure, natural love. Among all forms of service, none is greater than obedience to the Master’s command. O Lord, may this gracious command itself be granted to Your servant as a blessing.”
वह रुचि है- कपट, स्वार्थ और (अर्थ-धर्म-काम-मोक्ष रूप) चारों फलों को छोड़कर स्वाभाविक प्रेम से स्वामी की सेवा करना। और आज्ञा पालन के समान श्रेष्ठ स्वामी की और कोई सेवा नहीं है। हे देव! अब वही आज्ञा रूप प्रसाद सेवक को मिल जाए॥2॥
अस कहि प्रेम बिबस भए भारी। पुलक सरीर बिलोचन बारी॥
प्रभु पद कमल गहे अकुलाई। समउ सनेहु न सो कहि जाई॥3॥
Saying these words, Bharat ji was overwhelmed with love. His body quivered with emotion, his eyes filled with tears, and in deep anguish, he clasped the lotus feet of Shri Ram. The love of that moment was beyond expression.
भरतजी ऐसा कहकर प्रेम के बहुत ही विवश हो गए। शरीर पुलकित हो उठा, नेत्रों में (प्रेमाश्रुओं का) जल भर आया। अकुलाकर (व्याकुल होकर) उन्होंने प्रभु श्री रामचन्द्रजी के चरणकमल पकड़ लिए। उस समय को और स्नेह को कहा नहीं जा सकता॥3॥
कृपासिंधु सनमानि सुबानी। बैठाए समीप गहि पानी॥
भरत बिनय सुनिदेखि सुभाऊ। सिथिल सनेहँ सभा रघुराऊ॥4॥
The ocean of mercy, Shri Ram, comforted Bharat ji with gentle words and, holding his hand, seated him by His side. Hearing Bharat ji’s plea and witnessing his humility, the entire assembly, along with Shri Raghuveer, was overcome with love and grew still in tender emotion.
कृपासिन्धु श्री रामचन्द्रजी ने सुंदर वाणी से भरतजी का सम्मान करके हाथ पकड़कर उनको अपने पास बिठा लिया। भरतजी की विनती सुनकर और उनका स्वभाव देखकर सारी सभा और श्री रघुनाथजी स्नेह से शिथिल हो गए॥4॥
छन्द :
* रघुराउ सिथिल सनेहँ साधु समाज मुनि मिथिला धनी।
मन महुँ सराहत भरत भायप भगति की महिमा घनी॥
भरतहि प्रसंसत बिबुध बरषत सुमन मानस मलिन से।
तुलसी बिकल सब लोग सुनि सकुचे निसागम नलिन से॥
Shri Raghuraj, the assembly of Sages, Guru Vashishth, and King Janak of Mithila were all deeply moved with love. Within their hearts, they admired Bharat ji’s boundless devotion and affection for his brother. Even the Demigods, though tainted at heart, glorified Bharat ji and rained flowers from the Heavens. Tulsidas ji says that upon hearing Bharat ji’s words, all present bowed into humility, like lotus blossoms folding at nightfall.
श्री रघुनाथजी, साधुओं का समाज, मुनि वशिष्ठजी और मिथिलापति जनकजी स्नेह से शिथिल हो गए। सब मन ही मन भरतजी के भाईपन और उनकी भक्ति की अतिशय महिमा को सराहने लगे। देवता मलिन से मन से भरतजी की प्रशंसा करते हुए उन पर फूल बरसाने लगे। तुलसीदासजी कहते हैं- सब लोग भरतजी का भाषण सुनकर व्याकुल हो गए और ऐसे सकुचा गए जैसे रात्रि के आगमन से कमल!
* देखि दुखारी दीन दुहु समाज नर नारि सब।
मघवा महा मलीन मुए मारि मंगल चहत॥301॥
Witnessing the grief and anguish of men and women on both sides, the cruel-hearted Demigod Indra sought his own gain at the cost of the already afflicted, as though trying to slay those who were already dead.
दोनों समाजों के सभी नर-नारियों को दीन और दुःखी देखकर महामलिन मन इन्द्र मरे हुओं को मारकर अपना मंगल चाहता है॥301॥
* कपट कुचालि सीवँ सुरराजू। पर अकाज प्रिय आपन काजू॥
काक समान पाकरिपु रीती। छली मलीन कतहुँ न प्रतीती॥1॥
The Lord of the Demigods, Indra, was infamous for his deceitful ways. He valued his own gain even at the cost of others’ loss. Indra, the slayer of the demon Paak, was like a cunning crow, crafty, driven by malice, and harbouring deep mistrust towards all.
देवराज इन्द्र कपट और कुचाल की सीमा है। उसे पराई हानि और अपना लाभ ही प्रिय है। इन्द्र की रीति कौए के समान है। वह छली और मलिन मन है, उसका कहीं किसी पर विश्वास नहीं है॥1॥
प्रथम कुमत करि कपटु सँकेला। सो उचाटु सब कें सिर मेला॥
सुरमायाँ सब लोग बिमोहे। राम प्रेम अतिसय न बिछोहे॥2॥
First, Indra, with wicked intent, gathered many forms of deceit. Then he cast a spell of illusion (unsettling their minds with restlessness and disinterest) upon everyone. Through his illusory powers, all the people were thoroughly deluded and bewildered. Yet, despite such enchantment, their abundant love for Shri Ram was not fully severed; a measure of devotion still endured.
पहले तो कुमत (बुरा विचार) करके कपट को बटोरा (अनेक प्रकार के कपट का साज सजा)। फिर वह (कपटजनित) उचाट सबके सिर पर डाल दिया। फिर देवमाया से सब लोगों को विशेष रूप से मोहित कर दिया, किन्तु श्री रामचन्द्रजी के प्रेम से उनका अत्यन्त बिछोह नहीं हुआ (अर्थात उनका श्री रामजी के प्रति प्रेम कुछ तो बना ही रहा)॥2॥
भय उचाट बस मन थिर नाहीं। छन बन रुचि छन सदन सोहाहीं॥
दुबिध मनोगति प्रजा दुखारी। सरित सिंधु संगम जनु बारी॥3॥
Under the sway of fear and deception, people’s minds grew restless and unsettled. At one moment they yearned to stay in the forest with Shri Ram, and the next they wished to return to their homes. This inner conflict tormented the citizens, like the turbulent waters at the meeting of a river and the ocean.
भय और उचाट के वश किसी का मन स्थिर नहीं है। क्षण में उनकी वन में रहने की इच्छा होती है और क्षण में उन्हें घर अच्छे लगने लगते हैं। मन की इस प्रकार की दुविधामयी स्थिति से प्रजा दुःखी हो रही है। मानो नदी और समुद्र के संगम का जल क्षुब्ध हो रहा हो। (जैसे नदी और समुद्र के संगम का जल स्थिर नहीं रहता, कभी इधर आता और कभी उधर जाता है, उसी प्रकार की दशा प्रजा के मन की हो गई)॥3॥
दुचित कतहुँ परितोषु न लहहीं। एक एक सन मरमु न कहहीं॥
लखि हियँ हँसि कह कृपानिधानू। सरिस स्वान मघवान जुबानू॥4॥
Caught between these two choices, their hearts were torn, finding no peace anywhere. Each kept their inner feelings concealed from the other. Seeing this, Shri Ram smiled within and remarked, “A dog, Lord Indra, and a reckless youth are all the same.”
चित्त दो तरफा हो जाने से वे कहीं संतोष नहीं पाते और एक-दूसरे से अपना मर्म भी नहीं कहते। कृपानिधान श्री रामचन्द्रजी यह दशा देखकर हृदय में हँसकर कहने लगे- कुत्ता, इन्द्र और नवयुवक (कामी पुरुष) एक सरीखे (एक ही स्वभाव के) हैं। (पाणिनीय व्याकरण के अनुसार, श्वन, युवन और मघवन शब्दों के रूप भी एक सरीखे होते हैं)॥4॥
* भरतु जनकु मुनिजन सचिव साधु सचेत बिहाइ।
लागि देवमाया सबहि जथाजोगु जनु पाइ॥302॥
Except for Bharat ji, Janak ji, the Sages, Ministers, and other Hermits, all were influenced by the illusory powers of Indra, each according to the state of their own mind, as he swayed their thoughts with distractions.
भरतजी, जनकजी, मुनिजन, मंत्री और ज्ञानी साधु-संतों को छोड़कर अन्य सभी पर जिस मनुष्य को जिस योग्य (जिस प्रकृति और जिस स्थिति का) पाया, उस पर वैसे ही देवमाया लग गई॥302॥
* कृपासिंधु लखि लोग दुखारे। निज सनेहँ सुरपति छल भारे॥
सभा राउ गुर महिसुर मंत्री। भरत भगति सब कै मति जंत्री॥1॥
The ocean of mercy, Shri Ram, beheld the people’s turmoil, torn between their love for Him and the deceptive influence of Indra. Yet Bharat ji’s steadfast devotion to Shri Ram held firm the minds of King Janak, the Gurus, Brahmins, and the Ministers, leaving no room for Indra’s deceitful power to touch or enter them.
कृपासिंधु श्री रामचन्द्रजी ने लोगों को अपने स्नेह और देवराज इन्द्र के भारी छल से दुःखी देखा। सभा, राजा जनक, गुरु, ब्राह्मण और मंत्री आदि सभी की बुद्धि को भरतजी की भक्ति ने कील दिया॥1॥
रामहि चितवत चित्र लिखे से। सकुचत बोलत बचन सिखे से॥
भरत प्रीति नति बिनय बड़ाई। सुनत सुखद बरनत कठिनाई॥2॥
Everyone stood still like a painting, their eyes fixed on Shri Ram. They spoke with hesitation, repeating the same words as though taught to them. Bharat ji’s affection, virtues, gentleness, and glory are pleasing to hear, yet far too profound to be fully expressed in words.
सब लोग चित्रलिखे से श्री रामचन्द्रजी की ओर देख रहे हैं। सकुचाते हुए सिखाए हुए से वचन बोलते हैं। भरतजी की प्रीति, नम्रता, विनय और बड़ाई सुनने में सुख देने वाली है, पर उसका वर्णन करने में कठिनता है॥2॥
जासु बिलोकि भगति लवलेसू। प्रेम मगन मुनिगन मिथिलेसू॥
महिमा तासु कहै किमि तुलसी। भगति सुभायँ सुमति हियँ हुलसी॥3॥
Upon seeing just a drop of Bharat ji’s steadfast devotion, the assembly of Sages and King Janak of Mithila were overcome with emotion. Tulsidas ji reflects, “If a single drop can move them so deeply, how can I ever describe his full glory?” Beholding Bharat ji’s devotion and gracious nature, profound feelings arose in the heart of Tulsidas ji.
जिनकी भक्ति का लवलेश देखकर मुनिगण और मिथिलेश्वर जनकजी प्रेम में मग्न हो गए, उन भरतजी की महिमा तुलसीदास कैसे कहे? उनकी भक्ति और सुंदर भाव से (कवि के) हृदय में सुबुद्धि हुलस रही है (विकसित हो रही है)॥3॥
आपु छोटि महिमा बड़ि जानी। कबिकुल कानि मानि सकुचानी॥
कहि न सकति गुन रुचि अधिकाई। मति गति बाल बचन की नाई॥4॥
Thinking itself small and Bharat’s glory immense, the poet’s intellect shrank in humility, honouring the tradition of poets. Though deeply drawn to his countless virtues, it could not express them, the mind faltered, like the stammering speech of a child.
परन्तु वह बुद्धि अपने को छोटी और भरतजी की महिमा को बड़ी जानकर कवि परम्परा की मर्यादा को मानकर सकुचा गई (उसका वर्णन करने का साहस नहीं कर सकी)। उसकी गुणों में रुचि तो बहुत है, पर उन्हें कह नहीं सकती। बुद्धि की गति बालक के वचनों की तरह हो गई (वह कुण्ठित हो गई)!॥4॥
* भरत बिमल जसु बिमल बिधु सुमति चकोरकुमारि।
उदित बिमल जन हृदय नभ एकटक रही निहारि॥303॥
Bharat ji’s pure glory is like the spotless Moon (even purer than the real Moon which has spots), and the poet’s fine wisdom is like the devoted female chakor bird, which gazes endlessly at the shining Moon. In the clear sky of the devotees’ hearts, this Moon of Bharat ji’s fame has arisen, and the poet’s mind can only keep looking at it in wonder (unable to describe it in words).
भरतजी का निर्मल यश निर्मल चन्द्रमा है और कवि की सुबुद्धि चकोरी है, जो भक्तों के हृदय रूपी निर्मल आकाश में उस चन्द्रमा को उदित देखकर उसकी ओर टकटकी लगाए देखती ही रह गई है (तब उसका वर्णन कौन करे?)॥303॥
* भरत सुभाउ न सुगम निगमहूँ। लघु मति चापलता कबि छमहूँ॥
कहत सुनत सति भाउ भरत को। सीय राम पद होइ न रत को॥1॥
Even the Vedas struggle to comprehend the depth of Bharat ji’s nature. With humility, Tulsidas ji pleads, “O’ Noble poets, forgive the wavering of my limited intellect.” For one who sincerely recites or listens to the sacred virtues of Bharat ji, is it possible not to be filled with pure devotion for the divine feet of Sita ji and Ram ji?
भरतजी के स्वभाव का वर्णन वेदों के लिए भी सुगम नहीं है। (अतः) मेरी तुच्छ बुद्धि की चंचलता को कवि लोग क्षमा करें! भरतजी के सद्भाव को कहते-सुनते कौन मनुष्य श्री सीता-रामजी के चरणों में अनुरक्त न हो जाएगा॥1॥
सुमिरत भरतहि प्रेमु राम को। जेहि न सुलभु तेहि सरिस बाम को॥
देखि दयाल दसा सबही की। राम सुजान जानि जन जी की॥2॥

धरम धुरीन धीर नय नागर। सत्य सनेह सील सुख सागर॥
देसु कालु लखि समउ समाजू। नीति प्रीति पालक रघुराजू॥3॥

बोले बचन बानि सरबसु से। हित परिनाम सुनत ससि रसु से॥
तात भरत तुम्ह धरम धुरीना। लोक बेद बिद प्रेम प्रबीना॥4॥

(तदनुसार) ऐसे वचन बोले जो मानो वाणी के सर्वस्व ही थे, परिणाम में हितकारी थे और सुनने में चन्द्रमा के रस (अमृत) सरीखे थे। (उन्होंने कहा-) हे तात भरत! तुम धर्म की धुरी को धारण करने वाले हो, लोक और वेद दोनों के जानने वाले और प्रेम में प्रवीण हो॥4॥
* करम बचन मानस बिमल तुम्ह समान तुम्ह तात।
गुर समाज लघु बंधु गुन कुसमयँ किमि कहि जात॥304॥
….O’ Brother, if there is one who is pure in thought, word, and deed, it is you alone, none but you can be compared with yourself. How can I possibly praise the virtues of my younger brother, especially before the elders and revered Gurus, and that too in such trying circumstances?…
हे तात! कर्म से, वचन से और मन से निर्मल तुम्हारे समान तुम्हीं हो। गुरुजनों के समाज में और ऐसे कुसमय में छोटे भाई के गुण किस तरह कहे जा सकते हैं?॥304॥
* जानहु तात तरनि कुल रीती। सत्यसंध पितु कीरति प्रीती॥
समउ समाजु लाज गुरजन की। उदासीन हित अनहित मन की॥1॥

हे तात! तुम सूर्यकुल की रीति को, सत्यप्रतिज्ञ पिताजी की कीर्ति और प्रीति को, समय, समाज और गुरुजनों की लज्जा (मर्यादा) को तथा उदासीन, मित्र और शत्रु सबके मन की बात को जानते हो॥1॥
तुम्हहि बिदित सबही कर करमू। आपन मोर परम हित धरमू॥
मोहि सब भाँति भरोस तुम्हारा। तदपि कहउँ अवसर अनुसारा॥2॥

तुमको सबके कर्मों (कर्तव्यों) का और अपने तथा मेरे परम हितकारी धर्म का पता है। यद्यपि मुझे तुम्हारा सब प्रकार से भरोसा है, तथापि मैं समय के अनुसार कुछ कहता हूँ॥2॥
तात तात बिनु बात हमारी। केवल गुरकुल कृपाँ सँभारी॥
नतरु प्रजा परिजन परिवारू। हमहि सहित सबु होत खुआरू॥3॥
…O’ Dear brother! In the absence of our Father, it is only by the grace of the lineage of our revered Gurus that our well-being has been sustained; otherwise, along with us, the subjects, relatives, and the entire family would have been ruined…
हे तात! पिताजी के बिना (उनकी अनुपस्थिति में) हमारी बात केवल गुरुवंश की कृपा ने ही सम्हाल रखी है, नहीं तो हमारे समेत प्रजा, कुटुम्ब, परिवार सभी बर्बाद हो जाते॥3॥
जौं बिनु अवसर अथवँ दिनेसू। जग केहि कहहु न होइ कलेसू॥
तस उतपातु तात बिधि कीन्हा। मुनि मिथिलेस राखि सबु लीन्हा॥4॥
…If the Sun were to set well before its time, tell me, who in the world would not be distressed? O’ Dear brother! In the same way, fate has brought about such a calamity (the untimely death of our father). Yet, the great Sage and the King of Mithila have saved everyone from ruin…
यदि बिना समय के (सन्ध्या से पूर्व ही) सूर्य अस्त हो जाए, तो कहो जगत में किस को क्लेश न होगा? हे तात! उसी प्रकार का उत्पात विधाता ने यह (पिता की असामयिक मृत्यु) किया है। पर मुनि महाराज ने तथा मिथिलेश्वर ने सबको बचा लिया॥4॥
* राज काज सब लाज पति धरम धरनि धन धाम।
गुर प्रभाउ पालिहि सबहि भल होइहि परिनाम॥305॥
…All the affairs of the Kingdom, its honour, prestige, righteousness, land, wealth, and household, shall be safeguarded by the grace, power and authority of the revered Guru, and the outcome will indeed be auspicious…
राज्य का सब कार्य, लज्जा, प्रतिष्ठा, धर्म, पृथ्वी, धन, घर- इन सभी का पालन (रक्षण) गुरुजी का प्रभाव (सामर्थ्य) करेगा और परिणाम शुभ होगा॥305॥
* सहित समाज तुम्हार हमारा। घर बन गुर प्रसाद रखवारा॥
मातु पिता गुर स्वामि निदेसू। सकल धरम धरनीधर सेसू॥1॥

सो तुम्ह करहु करावहु मोहू। तात तरनिकुल पालक होहू॥
साधक एक सकल सिधि देनी। कीरति सुगति भूतिमय बेनी॥2॥
…Therefore, follow their commands yourself and guide me to do the same, and be the protector of the Solar dynasty, dear brother. For a seeker, this single practice of obeying the commands (of Mother, Father, Guru, and Master) is like the sacred Triveni, bestowing all accomplishments and leading to the threefold attainments of life: glory, liberation, and prosperity…
हे तात! तुम वही करो और मुझसे भी कराओ तथा सूर्यकुल के रक्षक बनो। साधक के लिए यह एक ही (आज्ञा पालन रूपी साधना) सम्पूर्ण सिद्धियों की देने वाली, कीर्तिमयी, सद्गतिमयी और ऐश्वर्यमयी त्रिवेणी है॥2॥
सो बिचारि सहि संकटु भारी। करहु प्रजा परिवारू सुखारी॥
बाँटी बिपति सबहिं मोहि भाई। तुम्हहि अवधि भरि बड़ि कठिनाई॥3॥
…Therefore, endure the great hardship with this thought in mind, and keep the people and the family happy. O’ Brother! All have shared in my hardship, but for the full term of fourteen years, you alone must bear the greatest sorrow…
इसे विचारकर भारी संकट सहकर भी प्रजा और परिवार को सुखी करो। हे भाई! मेरी विपत्ति सभी ने बाँट ली है, परन्तु तुमको तो अवधि (चौदह वर्ष) तक बड़ी कठिनाई है (सबसे अधिक दुःख है)॥3॥
जानि तुम्हहि मृदु कहउँ कठोरा। कुसमयँ तात न अनुचित मोरा॥
होहिं कुठायँ सुबंधु सहाए। ओड़िअहिं हाथ असनिहु के धाए॥4॥
…Though I know you to be tender-hearted, I must still speak these harsh words of separation. O’ Dear brother! In difficult times, this is not unfitting for me. For in adverse moments, it is the good-intentioned brothers who come forth as true helpers, just as even the blows of thunderbolts are warded off by one’s own hand…
तुमको कोमल जानकर भी मैं कठोर (वियोग की बात) कह रहा हूँ। हे तात! बुरे समय में मेरे लिए यह कोई अनुचित बात नहीं है। कुठौर (कुअवसर) में श्रेष्ठ भाई ही सहायक होते हैं। वज्र के आघात भी हाथ से ही रोके जाते हैं॥4॥
* सेवक कर पद नयन से मुख सो साहिबु होइ।
तुलसी प्रीति कि रीति सुनि सुकबि सराहहिं सोइ॥306॥
…A devotee should be like the hands, feet, and eyes, while a good master should embody the role of the mouth. (The hands, feet, and eyes gather sustenance for the mouth, which in turn distributes nourishment fairly to all the organs, restoring their strength in due measure. And in times of danger, these limbs are the first to rise in defence).” Tulsidas ji says that upon hearing of the boundless love shared between the servant and the master, Shri Bharat and Ram ji, the noble poets praise it.
सेवक हाथ, पैर और नेत्रों के समान और स्वामी मुख के समान होना चाहिए। तुलसीदासजी कहते हैं कि सेवक-स्वामी की ऐसी प्रीति की रीति सुनकर सुकवि उसकी सराहना करते हैं॥306॥
