* सुनहु नील अंगद हनुमाना। जामवंत मतिधीर सुजाना॥
सकल सुभट मिलि दच्छिन जाहू। सीता सुधि पूँछेहु सब काहू॥1॥

भावार्थ : हे धीरबुद्धि और चतुर नील, अंगद, जाम्बवान् और हनुमान! तुम सब श्रेष्ठ योद्धा मिलकर दक्षिण दिशा को जाओ और सब किसी से सीताजी का पता पूछना॥1॥
मन क्रम बचन सो जतन बिचारेहु। रामचंद्र कर काजु सँवारेहु॥
भानु पीठि सेइअ उर आगी। स्वामिहि सर्ब भाव छल त्यागी॥2॥
…With mind, speech, and action, contemplate only the means to find Sita ji, and devote yourself to successfully accomplishing Lord Ramchandra’s task. One may turn one’s back to the Sun and face the fire for warmth, but service to one’s Master must always be rendered with complete sincerity, free from all deceit, and with one’s heart, words, and deeds fully aligned in devotion…
भावार्थ : मन, वचन तथा कर्म से उसी का (सीताजी का पता लगाने का) उपाय सोचना। श्री रामचंद्रजी का कार्य संपन्न (सफल) करना। सूर्य को पीठ से और अग्नि को हृदय से (सामने से) सेवन करना चाहिए, परंतु स्वामी की सेवा तो छल छोड़कर सर्वभाव से (मन, वचन, कर्म से) करनी चाहिए॥2॥
तजि माया सेइअ परलोका। मिटहिं सकल भवसंभव सोका॥
देह धरे कर यह फलु भाई। भजिअ राम सब काम बिहाई॥3॥
….Renouncing attachment to worldly illusion (maya), one should devote oneself to attaining the divine abode of the Lord, for this alone removes all sorrows born of the cycle of birth and death. O’ Brother, the true purpose of having this human body is to abandon all desires and wholeheartedly worship Lord Ram…
भावार्थ : माया (विषयों की ममता-आसक्ति) को छोड़कर परलोक का सेवन (भगवान के दिव्य धाम की प्राप्ति के लिए भगवत्सेवा रूप साधन) करना चाहिए, जिससे भव (जन्म-मरण) से उत्पन्न सारे शोक मिट जाएँ। हे भाई! देह धारण करने का यही फल है कि सब कामों (कामनाओं) को छोड़कर श्री रामजी का भजन ही किया जाए॥3॥
सोइ गुनग्य सोई बड़भागी। जो रघुबीर चरन अनुरागी॥
आयसु मागि चरन सिरु नाई। चले हरषि सुमिरत रघुराई॥4॥
…Only he is truly virtuous and supremely blessed who remains devoted to the feet of Shri Raghuveer.” Bowing at his feet and seeking Sugriv’s permission, they all departed joyfully, keeping Shri Ram in their hearts.
भावार्थ : सद्गुणों को पहचानने वाला (गुणवान) तथा बड़भागी वही है जो श्री रघुनाथजी के चरणों का प्रेमी है। आज्ञा माँगकर और चरणों में फिर सिर नवाकर श्री रघुनाथजी का स्मरण करते हुए सब हर्षित होकर चले॥4॥
पाछें पवन तनय सिरु नावा। जानि काज प्रभु निकट बोलावा॥
परसा सीस सरोरुह पानी। करमुद्रिका दीन्हि जन जानी॥5॥
The Son of the Wind God, Hanuman ji, was the last to bow before Sugriv. Foreseeing that Hanuman ji would be the one to accomplish His mission, Lord Ram called him near and gently placed His lotus-like hand upon his head. Recognizing him as His true devotee, Shri Ram took the ring from His finger and gave it to Hanuman ji as a token of reassurance for Sita ji.
भावार्थ : सबके पीछे पवनसुत श्री हनुमान्जी ने सिर नवाया। कार्य का विचार करके प्रभु ने उन्हें अपने पास बुलाया। उन्होंने अपने करकमल से उनके सिर का स्पर्श किया तथा अपना सेवक जानकर उन्हें अपने हाथ की अँगूठी उतारकर दी॥5॥
बहु प्रकार सीतहि समुझाएहु। कहि बल बिरह बेगि तुम्ह आएहु॥
हनुमत जन्म सुफल करि माना। चलेउ हृदयँ धरि कृपानिधाना॥6॥
Shri Ram said, “Console Sita through various means, reminding Her of my strength and the pain of our separation, and return swiftly.” Feeling that his very birth had found its purpose through this sacred task, Hanuman ji installed the image of the all-merciful Lord Ram within his heart and set forth on his journey.
भावार्थ : (और कहा-) बहुत प्रकार से सीता को समझाना और मेरा बल तथा विरह (प्रेम) कहकर तुम शीघ्र लौट आना। हनुमान्जी ने अपना जन्म सफल समझा और कृपानिधान प्रभु को हृदय में धारण करके वे चले॥6॥
जद्यपि प्रभु जानत सब बाता। राजनीति राखत सुरत्राता॥7॥
Although the Lord is all-knowing, in keeping with the principles of righteous governance, the protector of the Demigods sent forth spies to search for Sita ji.
भावार्थ : यद्यपि देवताओं की रक्षा करने वाले प्रभु सब बात जानते हैं, तो भी वे राजनीति की रक्षा कर रहे हैं (नीति की मर्यादा रखने के लिए सीताजी का पता लगाने को जहाँ-तहाँ वानरों को भेज रहे हैं)॥7॥
* चले सकल बन खोजत सरिता सर गिरि खोह।
राम काज लयलीन मन बिसरा तन कर छोह॥23॥
All the monkeys set out to search every part of the forest, rivers, lakes, mountains, and hidden caves. So deeply were their hearts absorbed in fulfilling the Lord’s mission that they lost all sense of attachment to their own bodies.
भावार्थ : सब वानर वन, नदी, तालाब, पर्वत और पर्वतों की कन्दराओं में खोजते हुए चले जा रहे हैं। मन श्री रामजी के कार्य में लवलीन है। शरीर तक का प्रेम (ममत्व) भूल गया है॥23॥
* कतहुँ होइ निसिचर सैं भेटा। प्रान लेहिं एक एक चपेटा॥
बहु प्रकार गिरि कानन हेरहिं। कोउ मुनि मिलइ ताहि सब घेरहिं॥1॥
If they came across any demons along the way, they would slay them with a single slap. They searched mountains and forests thoroughly, and whenever they encountered a Sage, they would gather around him and inquire about Sita ji.
भावार्थ : कहीं किसी राक्षस से भेंट हो जाती है, तो एक-एक चपत में ही उसके प्राण ले लेते हैं। पर्वतों और वनों को बहुत प्रकार से खोज रहे हैं। कोई मुनि मिल जाता है तो पता पूछने के लिए उसे सब घेर लेते हैं॥1॥
लागि तृषा अतिसय अकुलाने। मिलइ न जल घन गहन भुलाने॥
मन हनुमान् कीन्ह अनुमाना। मरन चहत सब बिनु जल पाना॥2॥
Parched with thirst and weary, they wandered through the dense forest, unable to find water anywhere and losing their way. Hanuman ji reflected to himself that without water, everyone would soon perish.
भावार्थ : इतने में ही सबको अत्यंत प्यास लगी, जिससे सब अत्यंत ही व्याकुल हो गए, किंतु जल कहीं नहीं मिला। घने जंगल में सब भुला गए। हनुमान्जी ने मन में अनुमान किया कि जल पिए बिना सब लोग मरना ही चाहते हैं॥2॥
चढ़ि गिरि सिखर चहूँ दिसि देखा। भूमि बिबर एक कौतुक पेखा॥
चक्रबाक बक हंस उड़ाहीं। बहुतक खग प्रबिसहिं तेहि माहीं॥3॥
He climbed to the top of a hill and looked around in all four directions. There he saw a strange sight, within a hollow in the ground, countless chakwas, herons, swans, and many other birds were circling above, while numerous others were flying into the cave.
भावार्थ : उन्होंने पहाड़ की चोटी पर चढ़कर चारों ओर देखा तो पृथ्वी के अंदर एक गुफा में उन्हें एक कौतुक (आश्चर्य) दिखाई दिया। उसके ऊपर चकवे, बगुले और हंस उड़ रहे हैं और बहुत से पक्षी उसमें प्रवेश कर रहे हैं॥3॥
गिरि ते उतरि पवनसुत आवा। सब कहुँ लै सोइ बिबर देखावा॥
आगें कै हनुमंतहि लीन्हा। पैठे बिबर बिलंबु न कीन्हा॥4॥
Hanuman ji descended the hill, gathered everyone, and showed them the cave. Without delay, they all entered it, with Hanuman ji leading the way.
भावार्थ : पवन कुमार हनुमान्जी पर्वत से उतर आए और सबको ले जाकर उन्होंने वह गुफा दिखलाई। सबने हनुमान्जी को आगे कर लिया और वे गुफा में घुस गए, देर नहीं की॥4॥
* दीख जाइ उपबन बर सर बिगसित बहु कंज।
मंदिर एक रुचिर तहँ बैठि नारि तप पुंज॥24॥
They entered and beheld a beautiful garden with a pond adorned by countless blooming lotuses. Nearby stood a lovely temple, where a woman, the very embodiment of penance, was seated.
भावार्थ : अंदर जाकर उन्होंने एक उत्तम उपवन (बगीचा) और तालाब देखा, जिसमें बहुत से कमल खिले हुए हैं। वहीं एक सुंदर मंदिर है, जिसमें एक तपोमूर्ति स्त्री बैठी है॥24॥
* दूरि ते ताहि सबन्हि सिरु नावा। पूछें निज बृत्तांत सुनावा॥
तेहिं तब कहा करहु जल पाना। खाहु सुरस सुंदर फल नाना॥1॥
From a distance, they all bowed their heads to her, and upon inquiry, narrated the entire story. She then said, “Go, drink water, and partake of the delightful, juicy fruits of many kinds.”
भावार्थ : दूर से ही सबने उसे सिर नवाया और पूछने पर अपना सब वृत्तांत कह सुनाया। तब उसने कहा- जलपान करो और भाँति-भाँति के रसीले सुंदर फल खाओ॥1॥
मज्जनु कीन्ह मधुर फल खाए। तासु निकट पुनि सब चलि आए॥
तेहिं सब आपनि कथा सुनाई। मैं अब जाब जहाँ रघुराई॥2॥
After bathing and savouring the sweet fruits, the monkeys returned to her once more. She then began to share her story with them, saying, “I shall now depart for the abode where Shri Raghuveer resides…
भावार्थ : (आज्ञा पाकर) सबने स्नान किया, मीठे फल खाए और फिर सब उसके पास चले आए। तब उसने अपनी सब कथा कह सुनाई (और कहा-) मैं अब वहाँ जाऊँगी जहाँ श्री रघुनाथजी हैं॥2॥
मूदहु नयन बिबर तजि जाहू। पैहहु सीतहि जनि पछिताहू॥
नयन मूदि पुनि देखहिं बीरा। ठाढ़े सकल सिंधु कें तीरा॥3॥
…Now close your eyes, and you will find yourselves outside this cave. Do not lose heart, you will discover Sita ji.” As soon as they closed their eyes and opened them again, the valiant monkeys found themselves standing on the shore of the sea.
भावार्थ : तुम लोग आँखें मूँद लो और गुफा को छोड़कर बाहर जाओ। तुम सीताजी को पा जाओगे, पछताओ नहीं (निराश न होओ)। आँखें मूँदकर फिर जब आँखें खोलीं तो सब वीर क्या देखते हैं कि सब समुद्र के तीर पर खड़े हैं॥3॥
सो पुनि गई जहाँ रघुनाथा। जाइ कमल पद नाएसि माथा॥
नाना भाँति बिनय तेहिं कीन्हीं। अनपायनी भगति प्रभु दीन्हीं॥4॥
The hermitess then departed for the abode of Shri Raghunath. Bowing her head at the Lord’s lotus feet, she offered her humble prayers in many ways. The Lord, in His grace, bestowed upon her the boon of eternal devotion.
भावार्थ : और वह स्वयं वहाँ गई जहाँ श्री रघुनाथजी थे। उसने जाकर प्रभु के चरण कमलों में मस्तक नवाया और बहुत प्रकार से विनती की। प्रभु ने उसे अपनी अनपायिनी (अचल) भक्ति दी॥4॥
* बदरीबन कहुँ सो गई प्रभु अग्या धरि सीस।
उर धरि राम चरन जुग जे बंदत अज ईस॥25॥
She then journeyed to the Badrinath forest in the Himalayan mountains, reverently carrying out Shri Ram’s command and enshrining in her heart His feet, the very feet worshipped by Lord Brahma and Lord Shiv.
भावार्थ : प्रभु की आज्ञा सिर पर धारण कर और श्री रामजी के युगल चरणों को, जिनकी ब्रह्मा और महेश भी वंदना करते हैं, हृदय में धारण कर वह (स्वयंप्रभा) बदरिकाश्रम को चली गई॥25॥
* इहाँ बिचारहिं कपि मन माहीं। बीती अवधि काज कछु नाहीं॥
सब मिलि कहहिं परस्पर बाता। बिनु सुधि लएँ करब का भ्राता॥1॥
Meanwhile, standing on the seashore, the monkeys pondered in their hearts, “The time given by Sugriv has run out, and we have still not accomplished our task.” They all gathered and said to one another, “What will be the point of returning now, when we have no news of Sita ji?”
भावार्थ : यहाँ वानरगण मन में विचार कर रहे हैं कि अवधि तो बीत गई, पर काम कुछ न हुआ। सब मिलकर आपस में बात करने लगे कि हे भाई! अब तो सीताजी की खबर लिए बिना लौटकर भी क्या करेंगे!॥1॥
कह अंगद लोचन भरि बारी। दुहुँ प्रकार भइ मृत्यु हमारी॥
इहाँ न सुधि सीता कै पाई। उहाँ गएँ मारिहि कपिराई॥2॥
With tears filling his eyes, Angad said, “Death is certain for us either way, here, we have failed to find any trace of Sita ji, and if we return, King Sugriv will surely kill us all…
भावार्थ : अंगद ने नेत्रों में जल भरकर कहा कि दोनों ही प्रकार से हमारी मृत्यु हुई। यहाँ तो सीताजी की सुध नहीं मिली और वहाँ जाने पर वानरराज सुग्रीव मार डालेंगे॥2॥
पिता बधे पर मारत मोही। राखा राम निहोर न ओही॥
पुनि पुनि अंगद कह सब पाहीं। मरन भयउ कछु संसय नाहीं॥3॥
…Sugriv would have killed me at the time of my father’s death had Lord Ram not protected me; therefore, so I owe him no gratitude.” Angad repeatedly told everyone that their death was inevitable and that there was no doubt about it.
भावार्थ : वे तो पिता के वध होने पर ही मुझे मार डालते। श्री रामजी ने ही मेरी रक्षा की, इसमें सुग्रीव का कोई एहसान नहीं है। अंगद बार-बार सबसे कह रहे हैं कि अब मरण हुआ, इसमें कुछ भी संदेह नहीं है॥3॥
अंगद बचन सुन कपि बीरा। बोलि न सकहिं नयन बह नीरा॥
छन एक सोच मगन होइ रहे। पुनि अस बचन कहत सब भए॥4॥
Hearing Angad’s words, all the valiant monkeys fell silent, their eyes brimming with tears. For a moment, they were lost in deep thought, and then they spoke these words…
भावार्थ : वानर वीर अंगद के वचन सुनते हैं, किंतु कुछ बोल नहीं सकते। उनके नेत्रों से जल बह रहा है। एक क्षण के लिए सब सोच में मग्न हो रहे। फिर सब ऐसा वचन कहने लगे-॥4॥
हम सीता कै सुधि लीन्हें बिना। नहिं जैहैं जुबराज प्रबीना॥
अस कहि लवन सिंधु तट जाई। बैठे कपि सब दर्भ डसाई॥5॥
…“O’ Noble and wise Prince, we shall not return until we find some news of Sita ji.” Saying this, they went to the shore of the vast salty ocean and sat down, spreading Kusa grass beneath them.
भावार्थ : हे सुयोग्य युवराज! हम लोग सीताजी की खोज लिए बिना नहीं लौटेंगे। ऐसा कहकर लवणसागर के तट पर जाकर सब वानर कुश बिछाकर बैठ गए॥5॥
जामवंत अंगद दुख देखी। कहीं कथा उपदेस बिसेषी॥
तात राम कहुँ नर जनि मानहु। निर्गुन ब्रह्म अजित अज जानहु॥6॥
Seeing Angad’s sorrow, Jambvant narrated and explained many profound tales from the sacred scriptures. He said, “O’ Son, never regard Shri Ram as an ordinary human. Know Him to be the Supreme Soul; formless, attributeless, invincible, and unborn…
भावार्थ : जाम्बवान् ने अंगद का दुःख देखकर विशेष उपदेश की कथाएँ कहीं। (वे बोले-) हे तात! श्री रामजी को मनुष्य न मानो, उन्हें निर्गुण ब्रह्म, अजेय और अजन्मा समझो॥6॥
हम सब सेवक अति बड़भागी। संतत सगुन ब्रह्म अनुरागी॥7॥
…We, His servants, are truly blessed to remain ever devoted to Him. That same Supreme Being has taken a divine form…
भावार्थ : हम सब सेवक अत्यंत बड़भागी हैं, जो निरंतर सगुण ब्रह्म (श्री रामजी) में प्रीति रखते हैं॥7॥
* निज इच्छाँ प्रभु अवतरइ सुर मह गो द्विज लागि।
सगुन उपासक संग तहँ रहहिं मोच्छ सब त्यागि॥26॥
…of His own free will for the welfare of the Demigods, the Earth, the Cows, and the Brahmins. The devotees who worship His divine form gladly renounce even liberation itself, choosing instead to stay with Him whenever the Lord incarnates.”
भावार्थ : देवता, पृथ्वी, गो और ब्राह्मणों के लिए प्रभु अपनी इच्छा से (किसी कर्मबंधन से नहीं) अवतार लेते हैं। वहाँ सगुणोपासक (भक्तगण सालोक्य, सामीप्य, सारुप्य, सार्ष्टि और सायुज्य) सब प्रकार के मोक्षों को त्यागकर उनकी सेवा में साथ रहते हैं॥26॥
* एहि बिधि कथा कहहिं बहु भाँती। गिरि कंदराँ सुनी संपाती॥
बाहेर होइ देखि बहु कीसा। मोहि अहार दीन्ह जगदीसा॥1॥
In this way, Jambvant delivered many discourses. Nearby, in a cave, sat Sampati (the vulture and elder brother of Jatayu) who overheard their conversation. Emerging from the cave, he beheld the multitude of monkeys and said, “The Lord of the Universe has sent me food…
भावार्थ : इस प्रकार जाम्बवान् बहुत प्रकार से कथाएँ कह रहे हैं। इनकी बातें पर्वत की कन्दरा में सम्पाती ने सुनीं। बाहर निकलकर उसने बहुत से वानर देखे। (तब वह बोला-) जगदीश्वर ने मुझको घर बैठे बहुत सा आहार भेज दिया!॥1॥
आजु सबहि कहँ भच्छन करऊँ। दिन बहु चले अहार बिनु मरऊँ॥
कबहुँ न मिल भरि उदर अहारा। आजु दीन्ह बिधि एकहिं बारा॥2॥
…Today I will devour them all. I have been starving for many days and could find no satisfying meal; the Lord has now blessed me with an abundance of food.”
भावार्थ : आज इन सबको खा जाऊँगा। बहुत दिन बीत गए, भोजन के बिना मर रहा था। पेटभर भोजन कभी नहीं मिलता। आज विधाता ने एक ही बार में बहुत सा भोजन दे दिया॥2॥
डरपे गीध बचन सुनि काना। अब भा मरन सत्य हम जाना॥
कपि सब उठे गीध कहँ देखी। जामवंत मन सोच बिसेषी॥3॥
Upon hearing the vulture’s words, the monkeys trembled with fear, thinking, “Now our death is certain.” Seeing the vulture, they all stood up, while Jambvant felt deeply troubled in his heart.
भावार्थ : गीध के वचन कानों से सुनते ही सब डर गए कि अब सचमुच ही मरना हो गया। यह हमने जान लिया। फिर उस गीध (सम्पाती) को देखकर सब वानर उठ खड़े हुए। जाम्बवान् के मन में विशेष सोच हुआ॥3॥
कह अंगद बिचारि मन माहीं। धन्य जटायू सम कोउ नाहीं॥
राम काज कारन तनु त्यागी। हरि पुर गयउ परम बड़भागी॥4॥
After reflecting in his heart, Angad said, “Ah! There is no one as blessed as Jatayu, who gave up his life in the service of Shri Ram and ascended to the abode of Lord Hari; truly, he was most fortunate.”
भावार्थ : अंगद ने मन में विचार कर कहा- अहा! जटायु के समान धन्य कोई नहीं है। श्री रामजी के कार्य के लिए शरीर छोड़कर वह परम बड़भागी भगवान् के परमधाम को चला गया॥4॥
सुनि खग हरष सोक जुत बानी। आवा निकट कपिन्ह भय मानी॥
तिन्हहि अभय करि पूछेसि जाई। कथा सकल तिन्ह ताहि सुनाई॥5॥
Hearing Angad’s words, joyful in praise of his brother Jatayu yet sorrowful for his passing, Sampati came closer. The monkeys grew fearful at his approach, but he reassured them and gently inquired about his younger brother Jatayu. The monkeys then recounted the entire story to him.
भावार्थ : हर्ष और शोक से युक्त वाणी (समाचार) सुनकर वह पक्षी (सम्पाती) वानरों के पास आया। वानर डर गए। उनको अभय करके (अभय वचन देकर) उसने पास जाकर जटायु का वृत्तांत पूछा, तब उन्होंने सारी कथा उसे कह सुनाई॥5॥
सुनि संपाति बंधु कै करनी। रघुपति महिमा बहुबिधि बरनी॥6॥
Upon hearing of his brother’s noble deeds and how the Lord Himself had performed his last rites, Sampati praised and glorified Lord Ram in many ways.
भावार्थ : भाई जटायु की करनी सुनकर सम्पाती ने बहुत प्रकार से श्री रघुनाथजी की महिमा वर्णन की॥6॥
* मोहि लै जाहु सिंधुतट देउँ तिलांजलि ताहि।
बचन सहाइ करबि मैं पैहहु खोजहु जाहि॥27॥
Sampati said, “Now take me to the seashore so that I may perform the last rites for my brother. In return for this kindness, I shall offer you guidance, through which you will surely find the one you are searching for.”
भावार्थ : (उसने कहा-) मुझे समुद्र के किनारे ले चलो, मैं जटायु को तिलांजलि दे दूँ। इस सेवा के बदले मैं तुम्हारी वचन से सहायता करूँगा (अर्थात् सीताजी कहाँ हैं सो बतला दूँगा), जिसे तुम खोज रहे हो उसे पा जाओगे॥27॥
* अनुज क्रिया करि सागर तीरा। कहि निज कथा सुनहु कपि बीरा॥
हम द्वौ बंधु प्रथम तरुनाई। गगन गए रबि निकट उड़ाई॥1॥
After performing the last rites for his younger brother at the seashore, Sampati began to recount his story. He said, “Listen, O’ Valiant monkey heroes, in the prime of our youth, my brother and I once soared high into the sky and ventured close to the Sun…
भावार्थ : समुद्र के तीर पर छोटे भाई जटायु की क्रिया (श्राद्ध आदि) करके सम्पाती अपनी कथा कहने लगा- हे वीर वानरों! सुनो, हम दोनों भाई उठती जवानी में एक बार आकाश में उड़कर सूर्य के निकट चले गए॥1॥
तेज न सहि सक सो फिरि आवा। मैं अभिमानी रबि निअरावा॥
जरे पंख अति तेज अपारा। परेउँ भूमि करि घोर चिकारा॥2॥
…Jatayu could not endure the blazing heat of the Sun and turned back, but I, driven by pride, continued to move closer. The searing heat burned my wings, and with a cry of agony, I plummeted to the ground…
भावार्थ : वह (जटायु) तेज नहीं सह सका, इससे लौट आया (किंतु), मैं अभिमानी था इसलिए सूर्य के पास चला गया। अत्यंत अपार तेज से मेरे पंख जल गए। मैं बड़े जोर से चीख मारकर जमीन पर गिर पड़ा॥2॥
मुनि एक नाम चंद्रमा ओही। लागी दया देखि करि मोही॥
बहु प्रकार तेहिं ग्यान सुनावा। देहजनित अभिमान छुड़ावा॥3॥

भावार्थ : वहाँ चंद्रमा नाम के एक मुनि थे। मुझे देखकर उन्हें बड़ी दया लगी। उन्होंने बहुत प्रकार से मुझे ज्ञान सुनाया और मेरे देहजनित (देह संबंधी) अभिमान को छुड़ा दिया॥3॥
त्रेताँ ब्रह्म मनुज तनु धरिही। तासु नारि निसिचर पति हरिही॥
तासु खोज पठइहि प्रभु दूता। तिन्हहि मिलें तैं होब पुनीता॥4॥

भावार्थ : (उन्होंने कहा-) त्रेतायुग में साक्षात् परब्रह्म मनुष्य शरीर धारण करेंगे। उनकी स्त्री को राक्षसों का राजा हर ले जाएगा। उसकी खोज में प्रभु दूत भेजेंगे। उनसे मिलने पर तू पवित्र हो जाएगा॥4॥
जमिहहिं पंख करसि जनि चिंता। तिन्हहि देखाइ देहेसु तैं सीता॥
मुनि कइ गिरा सत्य भइ आजू। सुनि मम बचन करहु प्रभु काजू॥5॥

भावार्थ : और तेरे पंख उग आएँगे, चिंता न कर। उन्हें तू सीताजी को दिखा देना। मुनि की वह वाणी आज सत्य हुई। अब मेरे वचन सुनकर तुम प्रभु का कार्य करो॥5॥
गिरि त्रिकूट ऊपर बस लंका। तहँ रह रावन सहज असंका॥
तहँ असोक उपबन जहँ रहई। सीता बैठि सोच रत अहई॥6॥

भावार्थ : त्रिकूट पर्वत पर लंका बसी हुई है। वहाँ स्वभाव से ही निडर रावण रहता है। वहाँ अशोक नाम का उपवन (बगीचा) है, जहाँ सीताजी रहती हैं। (इस समय भी) वे सोच में मग्न बैठी हैं॥6॥
* मैं देखउँ तुम्ह नाहीं गीधहि दृष्टि अपार।
बूढ़ भयउँ न त करतेउँ कछुक सहाय तुम्हार॥28॥
…I can see Her, though you cannot, for the vision of vultures is limitless. I have grown old now; otherwise, I would have surely offered you my help…
भावार्थ : मैं उन्हें देख रहा हूँ, तुम नहीं देख सकते, क्योंकि गीध की दृष्टि अपार होती है (बहुत दूर तक जाती है)। क्या करूँ? मैं बूढ़ा हो गया, नहीं तो तुम्हारी कुछ तो सहायता अवश्य करता॥28॥
* जो नाघइ सत जोजन सागर। करइ सो राम काज मति आगर॥
मोहि बिलोकि धरहु मन धीरा। राम कृपाँ कस भयउ सरीरा॥1॥
…Only one who can leap across twelve hundred kilometres of the ocean and possesses great wisdom can successfully accomplish the divine mission of Shri Ram. Look upon me and let courage arise in your hearts, through the grace of Shri Ram, my wings that were once scorched have now been restored, and I feel renewed once again…
भावार्थ : जो सौ योजन (चार सौ कोस) समुद्र लाँघ सकेगा और बुद्धिनिधान होगा, वही श्री रामजी का कार्य कर सकेगा। (निराश होकर घबराओ मत) मुझे देखकर मन में धीरज धरो। देखो, श्री रामजी की कृपा से (देखते ही देखते) मेरा शरीर कैसा हो गया (बिना पाँख का बेहाल था, पाँख उगने से सुंदर हो गया) !॥1॥
पापिउ जाकर नाम सुमिरहीं। अति अपार भवसागर तरहीं॥
तासु दूत तुम्ह तजि कदराई राम हृदयँ धरि करहु उपाई॥2॥
…Even a sinner who contemplates the name of Lord Ram can cross the boundless ocean of worldly existence. You all are the devoted messengers of Shri Ram, cast away your fears, invoke His name within your hearts, and devise a way to cross the ocean and reach Lanka.”
भावार्थ : पापी भी जिनका नाम स्मरण करके अत्यंत पार भवसागर से तर जाते हैं। तुम उनके दूत हो, अतः कायरता छोड़कर श्री रामजी को हृदय में धारण करके उपाय करो॥2॥
अस कहि गरुड़ गीध जब गयऊ। तिन्ह के मन अति बिसमय भयऊ॥
निज निज बल सब काहूँ भाषा। पार जाइ कर संसय राखा॥3॥
Having spoken these words, Sampati departed, leaving everyone deeply astonished. Each of them spoke of their own strength, yet all harboured doubts about their ability to leap across the ocean.
भावार्थ : (काकभुशुण्डिजी कहते हैं-) हे गरुड़जी! इस प्रकार कहकर जब गीध चला गया, तब उन (वानरों) के मन में अत्यंत विस्मय हुआ। सब किसी ने अपना-अपना बल कहा। पर समुद्र के पार जाने में सभी ने संदेह प्रकट किया॥3॥
जरठ भयउँ अब कहइ रिछेसा। नहिं तन रहा प्रथम बल लेसा॥
जबहिं त्रिबिक्रम भए खरारी। तब मैं तरुन रहेउँ बल भारी॥4॥
The King of the Bears, Jambvant, said, “I have grown old now and no longer possess even a fraction of the strength I once had. In the age when Lord Ram, the slayer of the demon Khar, took the form of Vaman and conquered the three worlds (Heaven, Earth, and the Subterranean region) in just three steps, I was in my youth and endowed with immense strength…
भावार्थ : ऋक्षराज जाम्बवान् कहने लगे- मैं बूढ़ा हो गया। शरीर में पहले वाले बल का लेश भी नहीं रहा। जब खरारि (खर के शत्रु श्री राम) वामन बने थे, तब मैं जवान था और मुझ में बड़ा बल था॥4॥
* बलि बाँधत प्रभु बाढ़ेउ सो तनु बरनि न जाइ।
उभय घरी महँ दीन्हीं सात प्रदच्छिन धाइ॥29॥
…When the Lord expanded His form to capture Bali, His vastness was beyond description. Within the span of forty-eight minutes, I ran and circumambulated the Lord seven times.”
भावार्थ : बलि के बाँधते समय प्रभु इतने बढ़े कि उस शरीर का वर्णन नहीं हो सकता, किंतु मैंने दो ही घड़ी में दौड़कर (उस शरीर की) सात प्रदक्षिणाएँ कर लीं॥29॥
* अंगद कहइ जाउँ मैं पारा। जियँ संसय कछु फिरती बारा॥
जामवंत कह तुम्ह सब लायक। पठइअ किमि सबही कर नायक॥1॥
Angad said, “I can leap across the ocean, but I have doubts in my heart about returning.” Jambvant replied, “You possess the strength to do so, but how can we send our leader himself on this perilous task?”
भावार्थ : अंगद ने कहा- मैं पार तो चला जाऊँगा, परंतु लौटते समय के लिए हृदय में कुछ संदेह है। जाम्बवान् ने कहा- तुम सब प्रकार से योग्य हो, परंतु तुम सबके नेता हो, तुम्हे कैसे भेजा जाए?॥1॥
कहइ रीछपति सुनु हनुमाना। का चुप साधि रहेहु बलवाना॥
पवन तनय बल पवन समाना। बुधि बिबेक बिग्यान निधाना॥2॥

भावार्थ : ऋक्षराज जाम्बवान् ने श्री हनुमानजी से कहा- हे हनुमान्! हे बलवान्! सुनो, तुमने यह क्या चुप साध रखी है? तुम पवन के पुत्र हो और बल में पवन के समान हो। तुम बुद्धि-विवेक और विज्ञान की खान हो॥2॥
कवन सो काज कठिन जग माहीं। जो नहिं होइ तात तुम्ह पाहीं॥
राम काज लगि तव अवतारा। सुनतहिं भयउ पर्बताकारा॥3॥
…What task in this world could ever be difficult for you, O’ Son? You were born solely to accomplish Shri Ram’s divine mission.” The moment Shri Hanuman ji heard these words, his body expanded until it was as vast as a mountain.
भावार्थ : जगत् में कौन सा ऐसा कठिन काम है जो हे तात! तुमसे न हो सके। श्री रामजी के कार्य के लिए ही तो तुम्हारा अवतार हुआ है। यह सुनते ही हनुमान्जी पर्वत के आकार के (अत्यंत विशालकाय) हो गए॥3॥
कनक बरन तन तेज बिराजा। मानहुँ अपर गिरिन्ह कर राजा॥
सिंहनाद करि बारहिं बारा। लीलहिं नाघउँ जलनिधि खारा॥4॥

भावार्थ : उनका सोने का सा रंग है, शरीर पर तेज सुशोभित है, मानो दूसरा पर्वतों का राजा सुमेरु हो। हनुमान्जी ने बार-बार सिंहनाद करके कहा- मैं इस खारे समुद्र को खेल में ही लाँघ सकता हूँ॥4॥
सहित सहाय रावनहि मारी। आनउँ इहाँ त्रिकूट उपारी॥
जामवंत मैं पूँछउँ तोही। उचित सिखावनु दीजहु मोही॥5॥

भावार्थ : और सहायकों सहित रावण को मारकर त्रिकूट पर्वत को उखाड़कर यहाँ ला सकता हूँ। हे जाम्बवान्! मैं तुमसे पूछता हूँ, तुम मुझे उचित सीख देना (कि मुझे क्या करना चाहिए)॥5॥
