* लव निमेष परमानु जुग बरष कलप सर चंड।
भजसि न मन तेहि राम को कालु जासु कोदंड॥
…O’ Heart, why do you not worship Lord Ram, who wields time itself as His bow and commands the various divisions of time, be it a moment, an atom, an era, a year, or the very lifespan of the Universe, as His fierce arrows?”
भावार्थ : लव, निमेष, परमाणु, वर्ष, युग और कल्प जिनके प्रचण्ड बाण हैं और काल जिनका धनुष है, हे मन! तू उन श्री रामजी को क्यों नहीं भजता?
* सिंधु बचन सुनि राम सचिव बोलि प्रभु अस कहेउ।
अब बिलंबु केहि काम करहु सेतु उतरै कटकु॥
Upon hearing the ocean’s words, Shri Ram called for His Ministers and said, “What cause is there for delay now? Begin building the bridge so that the army may cross over.”
भावार्थ : समुद्र के वचन सुनकर प्रभु श्री रामजी ने मंत्रियों को बुलाकर ऐसा कहा- अब विलंब किसलिए हो रहा है? सेतु (पुल) तैयार करो, जिसमें सेना उतरे।॥
* सुनहु भानुकुल केतु जामवंत कर जोरि कह।
नाथ नाम तव सेतु नर चढ़ि भव सागर तरहिं॥
With folded hands, Jambvant said, “O’ Glory of the Solar Race, Your very name, my Lord, is the bridge upon which beings may tread to cross the vast ocean of worldly existence…
भावार्थ : जाम्बवान् ने हाथ जोड़कर कहा- हे सूर्यकुल के ध्वजास्वरूप (कीर्ति को बढ़ाने वाले) श्री रामजी! सुनिए। हे नाथ! (सबसे बड़ा) सेतु तो आपका नाम ही है, जिस पर चढ़कर (जिसका आश्रय लेकर) मनुष्य संसार रूपी समुद्र से पार हो जाते हैं।
* यह लघु जलधि तरत कति बारा। अस सुनि पुनि कह पवनकुमारा॥
प्रभु प्रताप बड़वानल भारी। सोषेउ प्रथम पयोनिधि बारी॥1॥
…Then surely, crossing this small ocean will not take much time.” Hanuman ji, the Son of the Wind God, said, “O’ Lord, Your glory is like the mighty fire that burns beneath the ocean’s depths. It had earlier dried up the waters completely,…
भावार्थ : फिर यह छोटा सा समुद्र पार करने में कितनी देर लगेगी? ऐसा सुनकर फिर पवनकुमार श्री हनुमान्जी ने कहा- प्रभु का प्रताप भारी बड़वानल (समुद्र की आग) के समान है। इसने पहले समुद्र के जल को सोख लिया था,॥1॥
* तव रिपु नारि रुदन जल धारा। भरेउ बहोरि भयउ तेहिं खारा॥
सुनि अति उकुति पवनसुत केरी। हरषे कपि रघुपति तन हेरी॥2॥
…but the tears shed by the wives of Your enemies has refilled the ocean, making it salty once again.” Hearing this poetic exaggeration from Hanuman ji, the monkeys rejoiced and looked towards Shri Raghunath ji with delight.
भावार्थ : परन्तु आपके शत्रुओं की स्त्रियों के आँसुओं की धारा से यह फिर भर गया और उसी से खारा भी हो गया। हनुमान्जी की यह अत्युक्ति (अलंकारपूर्ण युक्ति) सुनकर वानर श्री रघुनाथजी की ओर देखकर हर्षित हो गए॥2॥
* जामवंत बोले दोउ भाई। नल नीलहि सब कथा सुनाई॥
राम प्रताप सुमिरि मन माहीं। करहु सेतु प्रयास कछु नाहीं॥3॥
Jambvant then summoned the two brothers, Nal and Neel, and recounted the entire matter to them. He said, “Invoke the glory of Shri Ram within your hearts and begin constructing the bridge, you will face no difficulty in doing so.”
भावार्थ : जाम्बवान् ने नल-नील दोनों भाइयों को बुलाकर उन्हें सारी कथा कह सुनाई (और कहा-) मन में श्री रामजी के प्रताप को स्मरण करके सेतु तैयार करो, (रामप्रताप से) कुछ भी परिश्रम नहीं होगा॥3॥
* बोलि लिए कपि निकर बहोरी। सकल सुनहु बिनती कछु मोरी॥
राम चरन पंकज उर धरहू। कौतुक एक भालु कपि करहू॥4॥
Then he summoned the groups of monkeys and said, “Listen to my words, enshrine the feet of Lord Ram within your hearts, and let every monkey and bear take part in this joyous task…
भावार्थ : फिर वानरों के समूह को बुला लिया (और कहा-) आप सब लोग मेरी कुछ विनती सुनिए। अपने हृदय में श्री रामजी के चरण-कमलों को धारण कर लीजिए और सब भालू और वानर एक खेल कीजिए॥4॥
* धावहु मर्कट बिकट बरूथा। आनहु बिटप गिरिन्ह के जूथा॥
सुनि कपि भालु चले करि हूहा। जय रघुबीर प्रताप समूहा॥5॥
…Go forth, O’ Mighty troops of monkeys, and bring back countless trees and mountains.” Hearing his command, the monkeys and bears enthusiastically set out, shouting in unison, “Glory to the Almighty Raghuveer, the repository of valour!”
भावार्थ : विकट वानरों के समूह (आप) दौड़ जाइए और वृक्षों तथा पर्वतों के समूहों को उखाड़ लाइए। यह सुनकर वानर और भालू हूह (हुँकार) करके और श्री रघुनाथजी के प्रताप समूह की (अथवा प्रताप के पुंज श्री रामजी की) जय पुकारते हुए चले॥5॥
* अति उतंग गिरि पादप लीलहिं लेहिं उठाइ।
आनि देहिं नल नीलहि रचहिं ते सेतु बनाइ॥1॥
The monkeys and bears uprooted enormous mountains and trees and brought them to Nal and Neel, who skillfully used them to build the bridge.
भावार्थ : बहुत ऊँचे-ऊँचे पर्वतों और वृक्षों को खेल की तरह ही (उखाड़कर) उठा लेते हैं और ला-लाकर नल-नील को देते हैं। वे अच्छी तरह गढ़कर (सुंदर) सेतु बनाते हैं॥
* सैल बिसाल आनि कपि देहीं। कंदुक इव नल नील ते लेहीं॥
देखि सेतु अति सुंदर रचना। बिहसि कृपानिधि बोले बचना॥1॥
The monkeys lifted massive mountains and tossed them toward Nal and Neel, who caught them effortlessly, as if catching a ball. Watching the splendid bridge take shape, Lord Ram, the ocean of mercy, smiled heartily and said,…
भावार्थ : वानर बड़े-बड़े पहाड़ ला-लाकर देते हैं और नल-नील उन्हें गेंद की तरह ले लेते हैं। सेतु की अत्यंत सुंदर रचना देखकर कृपासिन्धु श्री रामजी हँसकर वचन बोले-॥1॥
परम रम्य उत्तम यह धरनी। महिमा अमित जाइ नहिं बरनी॥
करिहउँ इहाँ संभु थापना। मोरे हृदयँ परम कलपना॥2॥
…”This place is supremely marvellous and flawless in every way. Its boundless glory is beyond description. Here, I shall consecrate an emblem (Shivling) of Lord Shambhu, for my heart cherishes this firm resolve.”
भावार्थ : यह (यहाँ की) भूमि परम रमणीय और उत्तम है। इसकी असीम महिमा वर्णन नहीं की जा सकती। मैं यहाँ शिवजी की स्थापना करूँगा। मेरे हृदय में यह महान् संकल्प है॥2॥
सुनि कपीस बहु दूत पठाए। मुनिबर सकल बोलि लै आए॥
लिंग थापि बिधिवत करि पूजा। सिव समान प्रिय मोहि न दूजा॥3॥
…Upon hearing Shri Ram’s words, the King of the Monkeys, Sugriv, sent forth many messengers who invited and brought all the eminent Sages to the site. There, a Shivling was ceremoniously installed and worshipped with utmost reverence. Lord Ram said, “There is no one as dear to me as Lord Shiv…
भावार्थ : श्री रामजी के वचन सुनकर वानरराज सुग्रीव ने बहुत से दूत भेजे, जो सब श्रेष्ठ मुनियों को बुलाकर ले आए। शिवलिंग की स्थापना करके विधिपूर्वक उसका पूजन किया (फिर भगवान बोले-) शिवजी के समान मुझको दूसरा कोई प्रिय नहीं है॥3॥
सिव द्रोही मम भगत कहावा। सो नर सपनेहुँ मोहि न पावा॥
संकर बिमुख भगति चह मोरी। सो नारकी मूढ़ मति थोरी॥4॥
…An enemy of Lord Shiv who claims to be my devotee cannot reach me, not even in a dream. One who bears enmity toward Lord Shankar and yet seeks devotion to me is destined for hell, deluded and devoid of wisdom….
भावार्थ : जो शिव से द्रोह रखता है और मेरा भक्त कहलाता है, वह मनुष्य स्वप्न में भी मुझे नहीं पाता। शंकरजी से विमुख होकर (विरोध करके) जो मेरी भक्ति चाहता है, वह नरकगामी, मूर्ख और अल्पबुद्धि है॥4॥
* संकरप्रिय मम द्रोही सिव द्रोही मम दास।
ते नर करहिं कलप भरि घोर नरक महुँ बास॥2॥
…Those who are devoted to Lord Shankar but hostile to me, or those who worship me yet bear hatred toward Lord Shankar, such individuals shall dwell in the most dreadful hell until the end of creation…
भावार्थ : जिनको शंकरजी प्रिय हैं, परन्तु जो मेरे द्रोही हैं एवं जो शिवजी के द्रोही हैं और मेरे दास (बनना चाहते) हैं, वे मनुष्य कल्पभर घोर नरक में निवास करते हैं॥2॥
* जे रामेस्वर दरसनु करिहहिं। ते तनु तजि मम लोक सिधरिहहिं॥
जो गंगाजलु आनि चढ़ाइहि। सो साजुज्य मुक्ति नर पाइहि॥1॥
…Those who behold Lord Rameshwar (the Shivling) shall, upon leaving their mortal bodies, find their way to my eternal abode. And those who come and offer the sacred waters of the celestial river Ganga to Lord Rameshwar shall attain the highest liberation, merging with me in divine union…
भावार्थ : जो मनुष्य (मेरे स्थापित किए हुए इन) रामेश्वरजी का दर्शन करेंगे, वे शरीर छोड़कर मेरे लोक को जाएँगे और जो गंगाजल लाकर इन पर चढ़ावेगा, वह मनुष्य सायुज्य मुक्ति पावेगा (अर्थात् मेरे साथ एक हो जाएगा)॥1॥
होइ अकाम जो छल तजि सेइहि। भगति मोरि तेहि संकर देइहि॥
मम कृत सेतु जो दरसनु करिही। सो बिनु श्रम भवसागर तरिही॥2॥
…One who worships Lord Rameshwar with a heart free of worldly desires and devoid of deceit shall be blessed with my devotion through the grace of Lord Shankar. And whoever beholds the bridge built by me shall easily cross the ocean of worldly existence.”
भावार्थ : जो छल छोड़कर और निष्काम होकर श्री रामेश्वरजी की सेवा करेंगे, उन्हें शंकरजी मेरी भक्ति देंगे और जो मेरे बनाए सेतु का दर्शन करेगा, वह बिना ही परिश्रम संसार रूपी समुद्र से तर जाएगा॥2॥
राम बचन सब के जिय भाए। मुनिबर निज निज आश्रम आए॥
गिरिजा रघुपति कै यह रीती। संतत करहिं प्रनत पर प्रीती॥3॥
Shri Ram’s words filled everyone’s hearts with joy, and soon after, all the great Sages returned to their respective hermitages. Lord Shankar then said to Parvati ji, “O’ Girija, it is the compassionate nature of Shri Ram that He is ever loving toward those who surrender to Him.”
भावार्थ : श्री रामजी के वचन सबके मन को अच्छे लगे। तदनन्तर वे श्रेष्ठ मुनि अपने-अपने आश्रमों को लौट आए। (शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे पार्वती! श्री रघुनाथजी की यह रीति है कि वे शरणागत पर सदा प्रीति करते हैं॥3॥
बाँधा सेतु नील नल नागर। राम कृपाँ जसु भयउ उजागर॥
बूड़हिं आनहि बोरहिं जेई। भए उपल बोहित सम तेई॥4॥
Meanwhile, the wise Nal and Neel completed the construction of the bridge, and by the grace of Lord Ram, their fame spread in all directions. The very rocks that would ordinarily sink, dragging everything else down with them, now floated upon the water like countless rafts.
भावार्थ : चतुर नल और नील ने सेतु बाँधा। श्री रामजी की कृपा से उनका यह (उज्ज्वल) यश सर्वत्र फैल गया। जो पत्थर आप डूबते हैं और दूसरों को डुबा देते हैं, वे ही जहाज के समान (स्वयं तैरने वाले और दूसरों को पार ले जाने वाले) हो गए॥4॥
महिमा यह न जलधि कइ बरनी। पाहन गुन न कपिन्ह कइ करनी॥5॥
This was neither due to any miraculous power of the ocean, nor the porous nature of the rocks, nor the skill of the monkeys.
भावार्थ : यह न तो समुद्र की महिमा वर्णन की गई है, न पत्थरों का गुण है और न वानरों की ही कोई करामात है॥5॥
* श्री रघुबीर प्रताप ते सिंधु तरे पाषान।
ते मतिमंद जे राम तजि भजहिं जाइ प्रभु आन॥3॥
It was solely through the divine greatness of Shri Raghuveer that the rocks floated upon the sea. Those who abandon such a glorious Lord as Shri Ram to worship others are truly foolish of mind.
भावार्थ : श्री रघुवीर के प्रताप से पत्थर भी समुद्र पर तैर गए। ऐसे श्री रामजी को छोड़कर जो किसी दूसरे स्वामी को जाकर भजते हैं वे (निश्चय ही) मंदबुद्धि हैं॥3॥
* बाँधि सेतु अति सुदृढ़ बनावा। देखि कृपानिधि के मन भावा॥
चली सेन कछु बरनि न जाई। गर्जहिं मर्कट भट समुदाई॥1॥
Nal and Neel built a bridge that was extremely strong and sturdy. When the compassionate Shri Ram beheld it, His heart was filled with joy. Then the great army began to march forward with its splendour beyond description, as the valiant monkey warriors roared mightily in unison.
भावार्थ : नल-नील ने सेतु बाँधकर उसे बहुत मजबूत बनाया। देखने पर वह कृपानिधान श्री रामजी के मन को (बहुत ही) अच्छा लगा। सेना चली, जिसका कुछ वर्णन नहीं हो सकता। योद्धा वानरों के समुदाय गरज रहे हैं॥1॥
सेतुबंध ढिग चढ़ि रघुराई। चितव कृपाल सिंधु बहुताई॥
देखन कहुँ प्रभु करुना कंदा। प्रगट भए सब जलचर बृंदा॥2॥
Shri Ram stepped near the edge of the bridge and gazed upon the vast expanse of the ocean. Multitudes of aquatic beings rose from the waters to behold the reservoir of mercy, Lord Ram.
भावार्थ : कृपालु श्री रघुनाथजी सेतुबन्ध के तट पर चढ़कर समुद्र का विस्तार देखने लगे। करुणाकन्द (करुणा के मूल) प्रभु के दर्शन के लिए सब जलचरों के समूह प्रकट हो गए (जल के ऊपर निकल आए)॥2॥
मकर नक्र नाना झष ब्याला। सत जोजन तन परम बिसाला॥
अइसेउ एक तिन्हहि जे खाहीं। एकन्ह कें डर तेपि डेराहीं॥3॥
There were countless crocodiles, alligators, fish, and serpents, displaying their immense forms, some stretching as long as twelve hundred kilometres. Yet, there were others still who could swallow even these gigantic beings. Indeed, within the vast ocean, every creature lived in fear of another.
भावार्थ : बहुत तरह के मगर, नाक (घड़ियाल), मच्छ और सर्प थे, जिनके सौ-सौ योजन के बहुत बड़े विशाल शरीर थे। कुछ ऐसे भी जन्तु थे, जो उनको भी खा जाएँ। किसी-किसी के डर से तो वे भी डर रहे थे॥3॥
प्रभुहि बिलोकहिं टरहिं न टारे। मन हरषित सब भए सुखारे॥
तिन्ह कीं ओट न देखिअ बारी। मगन भए हरि रूप निहारी॥4॥
They all gazed upon the Lord, unwilling to depart even when urged to move away. Their hearts overflowed with joy, feeling utterly fulfilled at the sight of the Lord. So numerous were they that the waters of the ocean were no longer visible. All were immersed in divine ecstasy, enchanted by the beauty of Lord Hari.
भावार्थ : वे सब (वैर-विरोध भूलकर) प्रभु के दर्शन कर रहे हैं, हटाने से भी नहीं हटते। सबके मन हर्षित हैं, सब सुखी हो गए। उनकी आड़ के कारण जल नहीं दिखाई पड़ता। वे सब भगवान् का रूप देखकर (आनंद और प्रेम में) मग्न हो गए॥4॥
चला कटकु प्रभु आयसु पाई। को कहि सक कपि दल बिपुलाई॥5॥
At the Lord’s command, the army advanced. Who could possibly describe the immense vastness of the monkey army?
भावार्थ : प्रभु श्री रामचंद्रजी की आज्ञा पाकर सेना चली। वानर सेना की विपुलता (अत्यधिक संख्या) को कौन कह सकता है?॥5॥
* सेतुबंध भइ भीर अति कपि नभ पंथ उड़ाहिं।
अपर जलचरन्हि ऊपर चढ़ि चढ़ि पारहि जाहिं॥4॥
As the bridge grew very crowded, some of the monkeys, adept at soaring through the air, leapt skyward, while others mounted sea creatures to make their way across the ocean.
भावार्थ : सेतुबन्ध पर बड़ी भीड़ हो गई, इससे कुछ वानर आकाश मार्ग से उड़ने लगे और दूसरे (कितने ही) जलचर जीवों पर चढ़-चढ़कर पार जा रहे हैं॥4॥
* अस कौतुक बिलोकि द्वौ भाई। बिहँसि चले कृपाल रघुराई॥
सेन सहित उतरे रघुबीरा। कहि न जाइ कपि जूथप भीरा॥1॥
Beholding their playful antics, the gracious Lord Raghuveer and Shri Lakshman laughed with joy as they advanced on their way. Thus, Lord Raghuveer, accompanied by His mighty army, reached the shores of Lanka. The countless monkey commanders assembled there defied all description.
भावार्थ : कृपालु रघुनाथजी (तथा लक्ष्मणजी) दोनों भाई ऐसा कौतुक देखकर हँसते हुए चले। श्री रघुवीर सेना सहित समुद्र के पार हो गए। वानरों और उनके सेनापतियों की भीड़ कही नहीं जा सकती॥1॥
सिंधु पार प्रभु डेरा कीन्हा। सकल कपिन्ह कहुँ आयसु दीन्हा॥
खाहु जाइ फल मूल सुहाए। सुनत भालू कपि जहँ तहँ धाए॥2॥
After crossing the ocean, Lord Ram set up camp and said to the monkeys, “Go and enjoy the sweet fruits and roots.” At His command, the bears and monkeys cheerfully scattered in all directions to gather their meal.
भावार्थ : प्रभु ने समुद्र के पार डेरा डाला और सब वानरों को आज्ञा दी कि तुम जाकर सुंदर फल-मूल खाओ। यह सुनते ही रीछ-वानर जहाँ-तहाँ दौड़ पड़े॥2॥
सब तरु फरे राम हित लागी। रितु अरु कुरितु काल गति त्यागी॥
खाहिं मधुर फल बिटप हलावहिं। लंका सन्मुख सिखर चलावहिं॥3॥
For the sake of Shri Ram, all the trees bore fruit, transcending the laws of seasons and time. The monkeys and bears joyfully ate the sweet fruits, shook the trees, and hurled the mountain peaks toward Lanka.
भावार्थ : श्री रामजी के हित (सेवा) के लिए सब वृक्ष ऋतु-कुऋतु- समय की गति को छोड़कर फल उठे। वानर-भालू मीठे फल खा रहे हैं, वृक्षों को हिला रहे हैं और पर्वतों के शिखरों को लंका की ओर फेंक रहे हैं॥3॥
जहँ कहुँ फिरत निसाचर पावहिं। घेरि सकल बहु नाच नचावहिं॥
दसनन्हि काटि नासिका काना। कहि प्रभु सुजसु देहिं तब जाना॥4॥
Whenever they came across any demons while roaming about, they seized them and made them dance in mockery. With their sharp teeth, they bit off the demons’ ears and noses, releasing them only after they sang praises of the Lord’s glory.
भावार्थ : घूमते-घूमते जहाँ कहीं किसी राक्षस को पा जाते हैं तो सब उसे घेरकर खूब नाच नचाते हैं और दाँतों से उसके नाक-कान काटकर, प्रभु का सुयश कहकर (अथवा कहलाकर) तब उसे जाने देते हैं॥4॥
जिन्ह कर नासा कान निपाता। तिन्ह रावनहि कही सब बाता॥
सुनत श्रवन बारिधि बंधाना। दस मुख बोलि उठा अकुलाना॥5॥
The demons, their noses and ears mutilated, went before Ravan and described their dreadful ordeal. When Ravan learned that a bridge had been built across the ocean, he was struck with astonishment and began to speak with all his ten mouths.
भावार्थ : जिन राक्षसों के नाक और कान काट डाले गए, उन्होंने रावण से सब समाचार कहा। समुद्र (पर सेतु) का बाँधा जाना कानों से सुनते ही रावण घबड़ाकर दसों मुखों से बोल उठा-॥5॥
* बाँध्यो बननिधि नीरनिधि जलधि सिंधु बारीस।
सत्य तोयनिधि कंपति उदधि पयोधि नदीस॥5॥
He exclaimed, “What! Has He truly bridged the ocean, the sea, the brine, the main, the blue, the waves, the vast expanse, the abyss, the depths, and the very Lord of rivers?”
भावार्थ : वननिधि, नीरनिधि, जलधि, सिंधु, वारीश, तोयनिधि, कंपति, उदधि, पयोधि, नदीश को क्या सचमुच ही बाँध लिया?॥5॥
* निज बिकलता बिचारि बहोरी॥ बिहँसि गयउ गृह करि भय भोरी॥
मंदोदरीं सुन्यो प्रभु आयो। कौतुकहीं पाथोधि बँधायो॥1॥

भावार्थ : फिर अपनी व्याकुलता को समझकर (ऊपर से) हँसता हुआ, भय को भुलाकर, रावण महल को गया। (जब) मंदोदरी ने सुना कि प्रभु श्री रामजी आ गए हैं और उन्होंने खेल में ही समुद्र को बँधवा लिया है,॥1॥
कर गहि पतिहि भवन निज आनी। बोली परम मनोहर बानी॥
चरन नाइ सिरु अंचलु रोपा। सुनहु बचन पिय परिहरि कोपा॥2॥

भावार्थ : (तब) वह हाथ पकड़कर, पति को अपने महल में लाकर परम मनोहर वाणी बोली। चरणों में सिर नवाकर उसने अपना आँचल पसारा और कहा- हे प्रियतम! क्रोध त्याग कर मेरा वचन सुनिए॥2॥
नाथ बयरु कीजे ताही सों। बुधि बल सकिअ जीति जाही सों॥
तुम्हहि रघुपतिहि अंतर कैसा। खलु खद्योत दिनकरहि जैसा॥3॥
…O’ Lord! One should wage enmity only against those who can be overcome by wisdom or strength. The difference between you and Shri Raghupati is as vast as that between a firefly and the radiant Sun…
भावार्थ : हे नाथ! वैर उसी के साथ करना चाहिए, जिससे बुद्धि और बल के द्वारा जीत सकें। आप में और श्री रघुनाथजी में निश्चय ही कैसा अंतर है, जैसा जुगनू और सूर्य में!॥3॥
अति बल मधु कैटभ जेहिं मारे। महाबीर दितिसुत संघारे॥
जेहिं बलि बाँधि सहस भुज मारा। सोइ अवतरेउ हरन महि भारा॥4॥

भावार्थ : जिन्होंने (विष्णु रूप से) अत्यन्त बलवान् मधु और कैटभ (दैत्य) मारे और (वराह और नृसिंह रूप से) महान् शूरवीर दिति के पुत्रों (हिरण्याक्ष और हिरण्यकशिपु) का संहार किया, जिन्होंने (वामन रूप से) बलि को बाँधा और (परशुराम रूप से) सहस्रबाहु को मारा, वे ही (भगवान्) पृथ्वी का भार हरण करने के लिए (रामरूप में) अवतीर्ण (प्रकट) हुए हैं!॥4॥
तासु बिरोध न कीजिअ नाथा। काल करम जिव जाकें हाथा॥5॥

भावार्थ : हे नाथ! उनका विरोध न कीजिए, जिनके हाथ में काल, कर्म और जीव सभी हैं॥5॥

संत कहहिं असि नीति दसानन। चौथेंपन जाइहि नृप कानन॥
तासु भजनु कीजिअ तहँ भर्ता। जो कर्ता पालक संहर्ता॥2॥

भावार्थ : हे दशमुख! संतजन ऐसी नीति कहते हैं कि चौथेपन (बुढ़ापे) में राजा को वन में चला जाना चाहिए। हे स्वामी! वहाँ (वन में) आप उनका भजन कीजिए जो सृष्टि के रचने वाले, पालने वाले और संहार करने वाले हैं॥2॥
सोइ रघुबीर प्रनत अनुरागी। भजहु नाथ ममता सब त्यागी॥
मुनिबर जतनु करहिं जेहि लागी। भूप राजु तजि होहिं बिरागी॥3॥

भावार्थ : हे नाथ! आप विषयों की सारी ममता छोड़कर उन्हीं शरणागत पर प्रेम करने वाले भगवान् का भजन कीजिए। जिनके लिए श्रेष्ठ मुनि साधन करते हैं और राजा राज्य छोड़कर वैरागी हो जाते हैं-॥3॥
सोइ कोसलाधीस रघुराया। आयउ करन तोहि पर दाया॥
जौं पिय मानहु मोर सिखावन। सुजसु होइ तिहुँ पुर अति पावन॥4॥
…He is none other than the Lord of the Koshal Kingdom, Shri Raghunath Himself, who has come to bless you with His boundless grace. My dear, if you heed my counsel, your glorious and virtuous fame shall shine throughout the three worlds.”
भावार्थ : वही कोसलाधीश श्री रघुनाथजी आप पर दया करने आए हैं। हे प्रियतम! यदि आप मेरी सीख मान लेंगे, तो आपका अत्यंत पवित्र और सुंदर यश तीनों लोकों में फैल जाएगा॥4॥
* अस कहि नयन नीर भरि गहि पद कंपित गात।
नाथ भजहु रघुनाथहि अचल होइ अहिवात॥7॥
With these words, tears filled Mandodari’s eyes, and her body quivered as she clasped Ravan’s feet. She pleaded, “My Lord, worship Shri Raghunath, so that our sacred bond of marriage may endure for all eternity.”
भावार्थ : ऐसा कहकर, नेत्रों में (करुणा का) जल भरकर और पति के चरण पकड़कर, काँपते हुए शरीर से मंदोदरी ने कहा- हे नाथ! श्री रघुनाथजी का भजन कीजिए, जिससे मेरा सुहाग अचल हो जाए॥7॥
* तब रावन मयसुता उठाई। कहै लाग खल निज प्रभुताई॥
सुनु तैं प्रिया बृथा भय माना। जग जोधा को मोहि समाना॥1॥
Ravan then lifted Mandodari, the daughter of the Maya demon, and began to boast of his own might, saying, “Listen, my dear, there is no need for such fear. Tell me, is there any warrior in the whole world who can equal my strength?…
भावार्थ : तब रावण ने मंदोदरी को उठाया और वह दुष्ट उससे अपनी प्रभुता कहने लगा- हे प्रिये! सुन, तूने व्यर्थ ही भय मान रखा है। बता तो जगत् में मेरे समान योद्धा है कौन?॥1॥
बरुन कुबेर पवन जम काला। भुज बल जितेउँ सकल दिगपाला॥
देव दनुज नर सब बस मोरें। कवन हेतु उपजा भय तोरें॥2॥
…With the strength of my arms, I have subdued the Demigods, Varun (Water), Kuber, (Wealth), Pawan (Wind), Yamraj (Death) and all the Guardians of the ten directions. The Demigods, demons, and humans alike are under my command. Why then, my dear, has fear taken hold of you?”
भावार्थ : वरुण, कुबेर, पवन, यमराज आदि सभी दिक्पालों को तथा काल को भी मैंने अपनी भुजाओं के बल से जीत रखा है। देवता, दानव और मनुष्य सभी मेरे वश में हैं। फिर तुझको यह भय किस कारण उत्पन्न हो गया?॥2॥
नाना बिधि तेहि कहेसि बुझाई। सभाँ बहोरि बैठ सो जाई॥
मंदोदरीं हृदयँ अस जाना। काल बस्य उपजा अभिमाना॥3॥
After consoling Mandodari in many ways, Ravan returned to his court and took his royal throne. Deep within her heart, Mandodari understood that Ravan was now ruled by the shadow of his destined death, which had clouded his wisdom and filled him with false pride.
भावार्थ : मंदोदरी ने उसे बहुत तरह से समझाकर कहा (किन्तु रावण ने उसकी एक भी बात न सुनी) और वह फिर सभा में जाकर बैठ गया। मंदोदरी ने हृदय में ऐसा जान लिया कि काल के वश होने से पति को अभिमान हो गया है॥3॥
सभाँ आइ मंत्रिन्ह तेहिं बूझा। करब कवन बिधि रिपु सैं जूझा॥
कहहिं सचिव सुनु निसिचर नाहा। बार बार प्रभु पूछहु काहा॥4॥
Upon returning to his court, Ravan once again sought counsel from his Ministers, asking, “How shall we act against the approaching enemy?” The Ministers replied, “Listen, O’ Lord of the Demons, why do you ask about this matter again and again?…
भावार्थ : सभा में आकर उसने मंत्रियों से पूछा कि शत्रु के साथ किस प्रकार से युद्ध करना होगा? मंत्री कहने लगे- हे राक्षसों के नाथ! हे प्रभु! सुनिए, आप बार-बार क्या पूछते हैं?॥4॥
कहहु कवन भय करिअ बिचारा। नर कपि भालु अहार हमारा॥5॥
…What is there to fear that requires deliberation? Humans, monkeys, and bears are but our food, merely meant to be devoured.”
भावार्थ : कहिए तो (ऐसा) कौन-सा बड़ा भय है, जिसका विचार किया जाए? (भय की बात ही क्या है?) मनुष्य और वानर-भालू तो हमारे भोजन (की सामग्री) हैं॥5॥
* सब के बचन श्रवन सुनि कह प्रहस्त कर जोरि।
नीति बिरोध न करिअ प्रभु मंत्रिन्ह मति अति थोरि॥8॥
After hearing the words of the Ministers, Ravan’s son, Prahast, spoke with folded hands, “My Lord, I beseech you not to act against the path of righteousness, for the counsel of these Ministers is shallow and lacks true wisdom…
भावार्थ : कानों से सबके वचन सुनकर (रावण का पुत्र) प्रहस्त हाथ जोड़कर कहने लगा- हे प्रभु! नीति के विरुद्ध कुछ भी नहीं करना चाहिए, मन्त्रियों में बहुत ही थोड़ी बुद्धि है॥8॥
कहहिं सचिव सठ ठकुर सोहाती। नाथ न पूर आव एहि भाँती॥
बारिधि नाघि एक कपि आवा। तासु चरित मन महुँ सबु गावा॥॥1॥
…These foolish Ministers merely flatter you, speaking only what they think will please your ears. My Lord, their words will bring you no good. A single monkey leapt across the vast ocean and reached Lanka, and to this day, people everywhere recall and sing of his heroic deeds in their hearts…
भावार्थ : ये सभी मूर्ख (खुशामदी) मन्त्र ठकुरसुहाती (मुँहदेखी) कह रहे हैं। हे नाथ! इस प्रकार की बातों से पूरा नहीं पड़ेगा। एक ही बंदर समुद्र लाँघकर आया था। उसका चरित्र सब लोग अब भी मन-ही-मन गाया करते हैं (स्मरण किया करते हैं) ॥1॥
