सुभट सकल चारिहुँ दिसि जाहू। धरि धरि भालु कीस सब खाहू॥
उमा रावनहि अस अभिमाना। जिमि टिट्टिभ खग सूत उताना॥3॥
…Brave warriors, go in all four directions, and wherever you find monkeys and bears, seize them and devour them all.” Lord Shiv said to Goddess Parvati, “Uma, Ravan’s false pride was like that of a sandpiper bird that sleeps with its legs raised toward the sky, imagining it will hold up the sky if it falls.”
(और बोला-) हे वीरों! सब लोग चारों दिशाओं में जाओ और रीछ-वानर सबको पकड़-पकड़कर खाओ। (शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे उमा! रावण को ऐसा अभिमान था जैसा टिटिहिरी पक्षी पैर ऊपर की ओर करके सोता है (मानो आकाश को थाम लेगा)॥3॥
चले निसाचर आयसु मागी। गहि कर भिंडिपाल बर साँगी॥
तोमर मुद्गर परसु प्रचंडा। सूल कृपान परिघ गिरिखंडा॥4॥
Taking Ravan’s permission, the demons surged forth, armed with powerful slings, spears, iron clubs, maces, fierce axes, tridents, swords, and great masses of rocks in their hands.
आज्ञा माँगकर और हाथों में उत्तम भिंदिपाल, साँगी (बरछी), तोमर, मुद्गर, प्रचण्ड फरसे, शूल, दोधारी तलवार, परिघ और पहाड़ों के टुकड़े लेकर राक्षस चले॥4॥
जिमि अरुनोपल निकर निहारी। धावहिं सठ खग मांस अहारी॥
चोंच भंग दुख तिन्हहि न सूझा। तिमि धाए मनुजाद अबूझा॥5॥
The demons rushed forward like foolish carnivorous birds that swoop down upon red stones, mistaking them for flesh, unaware of the pain that awaits them when their beaks shatter against the hard gems, just as they would against the formidable monkey army.
जैसे मूर्ख मांसाहारी पक्षी लाल पत्थरों का समूह देखकर उस पर टूट पड़ते हैं, (पत्थरों पर लगने से) चोंच टूटने का दुःख उन्हें नहीं सूझता, वैसे ही ये बेसमझ राक्षस दौड़े॥5॥
* नानायुध सर चाप धर जातुधान बल बीर।
कोट कँगूरन्हि चढ़ि गए कोटि कोटि रनधीर॥40॥
Carrying countless kinds of weapons and bows and arrows, millions of powerful and battle-hardened demon warriors climbed up the parapets of the fort.
अनेकों प्रकार के अस्त्र-शस्त्र और धनुष-बाण धारण किए करोड़ों बलवान् और रणधीर राक्षस वीर परकोटे के कँगूरों पर चढ़ गए॥40॥
* कोट कँगूरन्हि सोहहिं कैसे। मेरु के सृंगनि जनु घन बैसे॥
बाजहिं ढोल निसान जुझाऊ। सुनि धुनि होइ भटन्हि मन चाऊ॥1॥
On the golden bastions and parapets of Lanka’s fort, they appeared like a cluster of dark clouds gathered upon the peak of Mount Meru. The thunderous clash of kettledrums and tabors filled the hearts of the warriors with fierce enthusiasm for battle.
वे परकोटे के कँगूरों पर कैसे शोभित हो रहे हैं, मानो सुमेरु के शिखरों पर बादल बैठे हों। जुझाऊ ढोल और डंके आदि बज रहे हैं, (जिनकी) ध्वनि सुनकर योद्धाओं के मन में (लड़ने का) चाव होता है॥1॥
बाजहिं भेरि नफीरि अपारा। सुनि कादर उर जाहिं दरारा॥
देखिन्ह जाइ कपिन्ह के ठट्टा। अति बिसाल तनु भालु सुभट्टा॥2॥
Innumerable bugles and clarinets sounded, and at their blast, faint hearts shattered. The demons advanced and beheld the monkey and bear troops, towering in size and fearsome in form.
अगणित नफीरी और भेरी बज रही है, (जिन्हें) सुनकर कायरों के हृदय में दरारें पड़ जाती हैं। उन्होंने जाकर अत्यन्त विशाल शरीर वाले महान् योद्धा वानर और भालुओं के ठट्ट (समूह) देखे॥2॥
धावहिं गनहिं न अवघट घाटा। पर्बत फोरि करहिं गहि बाटा॥
कटकटाहिं कोटिन्ह भट गर्जहिं। दसन ओठ काटहिं अति तर्जहिं॥3॥
The monkey army advanced fearlessly, undeterred by the formidable terrain before them. Gripping mountains in their hands, they smashed them to clear their path. Millions of brave warriors roared and let out piercing cries from their mouths, biting their lips as they issued fierce challenges to the enemy.
(देखा कि) वे रीछ-वानर दौड़ते हैं, औघट (ऊँची-नीची, विकट) घाटियों को कुछ नहीं गिनते। पकड़कर पहाड़ों को फोड़कर रास्ता बना लेते हैं। करोड़ों योद्धा कटकटाते और गर्जते हैं। दाँतों से होठ काटते और खूब डपटते हैं॥3॥
उत रावन इत राम ई। जयति जयति जय परी लराई॥
निसिचर सिखर समूह ढहावहिं। कूदि धरहिं कपि फेरि चलावहिं॥4॥
On one side, Shri Ram’s monkey army shouted for Shri Ram’s triumph with resounding cries of “Victory, victory, victory,” and on the other side, Ravan’s demons hailed for his victory. The two armies clashed, as the demons hurled volleys of mountain peaks at the monkeys, who caught them mid-air and hurled them back with equal force.
उधर रावण की और इधर श्री रामजी की दुहाई बोली जा रही है। ‘जय’ ‘जय’ ‘जय’ की ध्वनि होते ही लड़ाई छिड़ गई। राक्षस पहाड़ों के ढेर के ढेर शिखरों को फेंकते हैं। वानर कूदकर उन्हें पकड़ लेते हैं और वापस उन्हीं की ओर चलाते हैं॥4॥
छंद :
* धरि कुधर खंड प्रचंड मर्कट भालु गढ़ पर डारहीं।
झपटहिं चरन गहि पटकि महि भजि चलत बहुरि पचारहीं॥
अति तरल तरुन प्रताप तरपहिं तमकि गढ़ चढ़ि चढ़ि गए।
कपि भालु चढ़ि मंदिरन्ह जहँ तहँ राम जसु गावत भए॥
Carrying massive mountains, the mighty monkeys and bears hurled them at the fort. They pounced and seized the demons by their feet, smashing them to the ground before rushing forward again to challenge them in battle. Agile, fiery, and charged with valour, the monkeys and bears leapt swiftly onto the fort walls, entering many palaces, and proclaiming the glory of Lord Ram wherever they pleased.
प्रचण्ड वानर और भालू पर्वतों के टुकड़े ले-लेकर किले पर डालते हैं। वे झपटते हैं और राक्षसों के पैर पकड़कर उन्हें पृथ्वी पर पटककर भाग चलते हैं और फिर ललकारते हैं। बहुत ही चंचल और बड़े तेजस्वी वानर-भालू बड़ी फुर्ती से उछलकर किले पर चढ़-चढ़कर गए और जहाँ-तहाँ महलों में घुसकर श्री रामजी का यश गाने लगे।
* एकु एकु निसिचर गहि पुनि कपि चले पराइ।
ऊपर आपु हेठ भट गिरहिं धरनि पर आइ॥41॥
Then, clutching a demon in each hand, the monkeys and bears ran and leapt from the top of the fort; with themselves above and the demons below, they crashed to the ground in that very manner.
फिर एक-एक राक्षस को पकड़कर वे वानर भाग चले। ऊपर आप और नीचे (राक्षस) योद्धा- इस प्रकार वे (किले से) धरती पर आ गिरते हैं॥41॥
* राम प्रताप प्रबल कपिजूथा। मर्दहिं निसिचर सुभट बरूथा॥
चढ़े दुर्ग पुनि जहँ तहँ बानर। जय रघुबीर प्रताप दिवाकर॥1॥
With the glory of Shri Ram’s name, the mighty monkey troops crushed the demon warrior army, and then climbed the fort from all sides, chanting praises of the Sun-like radiance of Shri Raghuveer.
श्री रामजी के प्रताप से प्रबल वानरों के झुंड राक्षस योद्धाओं के समूह के समूह मसल रहे हैं। वानर फिर जहाँ-तहाँ किले पर चढ़ गए और प्रताप में सूर्य के समान श्री रघुवीर की जय बोलने लगे॥1॥
चले निसाचर निकर पराई। प्रबल पवन जिमि घन समुदाई॥
हाहाकार भयउ पुर भारी। रोवहिं बालक आतुर नारी॥2॥
The armies of demons began to flee, just as clusters of clouds scatter before strong winds. A great outcry rose throughout the city of Lanka, with children, the sick, and women weeping in every direction.
राक्षसों के झुंड वैसे ही भाग चले जैसे जोर की हवा चलने पर बादलों के समूह तितर-बितर हो जाते हैं। लंका नगरी में बड़ा भारी हाहाकार मच गया। बालक, स्त्रियाँ और रोगी (असमर्थता के कारण) रोने लगे॥2॥
सब मिलि देहिं रावनहि गारी। राज करत एहिं मृत्यु हँकारी॥
निज दल बिचल सुनी तेहिं काना। फेरि सुभट लंकेस रिसाना॥3॥
Everyone began hurling abuses at Ravan, saying he had invited his own death while enjoying his sovereignty. When Ravan heard that his demon army had lost ground and the warriors had fled, he was consumed with fury.
सब मिलकर रावण को गालियाँ देने लगे कि राज्य करते हुए इसने मृत्यु को बुला लिया। रावण ने जब अपनी सेना का विचलित होना कानों से सुना, तब (भागते हुए) योद्धाओं को लौटाकर वह क्रोधित होकर बोला-॥3॥
जो रन बिमुख सुना मैं काना। सो मैं हतब कराल कृपाना॥
सर्बसु खाइ भोग करि नाना। समर भूमि भए बल्लभ प्राना॥4॥
He shouted, “If I hear again that anyone has turned his back on the battlefield, I will cut him down with my formidable sword. You have consumed everything of mine and enjoyed every kind of luxury until now, and suddenly your lives have become so precious to you on the battlefield.”
मैं जिसे रण से पीठ देकर भागा हुआ अपने कानों सुनूँगा, उसे स्वयं भयानक दोधारी तलवार से मारूँगा। मेरा सब कुछ खाया, भाँति-भाँति के भोग किए और अब रणभूमि में प्राण प्यारे हो गए!॥4॥
उग्र बचन सुनि सकल डेराने। चले क्रोध करि सुभट लजाने॥
सन्मुख मरन बीर कै सोभा। तब तिन्ह तजा प्रान कर लोभा॥5॥
Hearing Ravan’s harsh words, all the demons grew fearful and ashamed and turned back to face the enemy. They reasoned that it was glorious to die confronting the foe on the battlefield, and in this way, they cast aside their attachment to their own lives.
रावण के उग्र (कठोर) वचन सुनकर सब वीर डर गए और लज्जित होकर क्रोध करके युद्ध के लिए लौट चले। रण में (शत्रु के) सम्मुख (युद्ध करते हुए) मरने में ही वीर की शोभा है। (यह सोचकर) तब उन्होंने प्राणों का लोभ छोड़ दिया॥5॥
* बहु आयुध धर सुभट सब भिरहिं पचारि पचारि।
ब्याकुल किए भालु कपि परिघ त्रिसूलन्हि मारि॥42॥
The demon warriors, wielding many weapons, repeatedly challenged the monkey army and clashed with them, striking with spears and tridents and causing great pain and distress to the monkeys and bears.
बहुत से अस्त्र-शस्त्र धारण किए, सब वीर ललकार-ललकारकर भिड़ने लगे। उन्होंने परिघों और त्रिशूलों से मार-मारकर सब रीछ-वानरों को व्याकुल कर दिया॥42॥
* भय आतुर कपि भागत लागे। जद्यपि उमा जीतिहहिं आगे॥
कोउ कह कहँ अंगद हनुमंता। कहँ नल नील दुबिद बलवंता॥1॥
Lord Shiv said to Goddess Parvati, “Though the monkeys will triumph in the end, at that moment they were fleeing in fear.” Someone cried out, “Where are Angad and Hanuman? Where are the brave Nal, Neel, and Dvivid?”
(शिवजी कहते हैं-) वानर भयातुर होकर (डर के मारे घबड़ाकर) भागने लगे, यद्यपि हे उमा! आगे चलकर (वे ही) जीतेंगे। कोई कहता है- अंगद-हनुमान् कहाँ हैं? बलवान् नल, नील और द्विविद कहाँ हैं?॥1॥
निज दल बिकल सुना हनुमाना। पच्छिम द्वार रहा बलवाना॥
मेघनाद तहँ करइ लराई। टूट न द्वार परम कठिनाई॥2॥
When the mighty Hanuman ji heard that his troops were in distress, he was at Lanka’s western gate, engaged in battle with Meghnad. The gate would not break, causing great hardship and slowing the advance.
हनुमान्जी ने जब अपने दल को विकल (भयभीत) हुआ सुना, उस समय वे बलवान् पश्चिम द्वार पर थे। वहाँ उनसे मेघनाद युद्ध कर रहा था। वह द्वार टूटता न था, बड़ी भारी कठिनाई हो रही थी॥2॥
पवनतनय मन भा अति क्रोधा। गर्जेउ प्रबल काल सम जोधा॥
कूदि लंक गढ़ ऊपर आवा। गहि गिरि मेघनाद कहुँ धावा॥3॥
The son of the Wind God, Hanuman ji, grew deeply agitated in his heart. Roaring like a warrior as fearsome as the God of Death, he leapt and landed upon the top of Lanka’s fort. Seizing a mountain in his hands, he charged after Meghnad with unstoppable force.
तब पवनपुत्र हनुमान्जी के मन में बड़ा भारी क्रोध हुआ। वे काल के समान योद्धा बड़े जोर से गरजे और कूदकर लंका के किले पर आ गए और पहाड़ लेकर मेघनाद की ओर दौड़े॥3॥
भंजेउ रथ सारथी निपाता। ताहि हृदय महुँ मारेसि लाता॥
दुसरें सूत बिकल तेहि जाना। स्यंदन घालि तुरत गृह आना॥4॥
Hanuman ji then smashed Meghnad’s chariot, slew his charioteer, and struck Meghnad’s chest with a powerful kick. Seeing Meghnad in such a dire state, another charioteer hurried to the spot, lifted him up, and carried him away from the battlefield to his palace.
रथ तोड़ डाला, सारथी को मार गिराया और मेघनाद की छाती में लात मारी। दूसरा सारथी मेघनाद को व्याकुल जानकर, उसे रथ में डालकर, तुरंत घर ले आया॥4॥
* अंगद सुना पवनसुत गढ़ पर गयउ अकेल।
रन बाँकुरा बालिसुत तरकि चढ़ेउ कपि खेल॥43॥
When Angad heard that the son of the Wind God had gone alone onto the fort, the stalwart hero of the battlefield, the son of Bali, leapt and reached the top of the fort with a swift and playful jump.
इधर अंगद ने सुना कि पवनपुत्र हनुमान् किले पर अकेले ही गए हैं, तो रण में बाँके बालि पुत्र वानर के खेल की तरह उछलकर किले पर चढ़ गए॥43॥
कलस सहित गहि भवनु ढहावा। देखि निसाचरपति भय पावा॥
नारि बृंद कर पीटहिं छाती। अब दुइ कपि आए उतपाती॥2॥
They destroyed Ravan’s entire palace along with its pinnacle, and the King of demons himself was shaken by this bold assault. The women inside were terrified, and beating their chests, they cried out, “This time, two fierce and troublesome monkeys have come.”
उन्होंने कलश सहित महल को पकड़कर ढहा दिया। यह देखकर राक्षस राज रावण डर गया। सब स्त्रियाँ हाथों से छाती पीटने लगीं (और कहने लगीं-) अब की बार दो उत्पाती वानर (एक साथ) आ गए हैं॥2॥
कपिलीला करि तिन्हहि डेरावहिं। रामचंद्र कर सुजसु सुनावहिं॥
पुनि कर गहि कंचन के खंभा। कहेन्हि करिअ उतपात अरंभा॥3॥
With their playful yet fearsome monkey pranks, they struck terror in the hearts of the residents while proclaiming the glories of Shri Ramchandra. Then, each seizing a golden pillar in hand, they said to one another, “Come, let us begin our rampage!”
वानरलीला करके (घुड़की देकर) दोनों उनको डराते हैं और श्री रामचंद्रजी का सुंदर यश सुनाते हैं। फिर सोने के खंभों को हाथों से पकड़कर उन्होंने (परस्पर) कहा कि अब उत्पात आरंभ किया जाए॥3॥
गर्जि परे रिपु कटक मझारी। लागे मर्दै भुज बल भारी॥
काहुहि लात चपेटन्हि केहू। भजहु न रामहि सो फल लेहू॥4॥
With a thunderous roar, they leapt into the midst of the demon army and began crushing them with their powerful arms. They slapped some and kicked others, declaring, “Face the consequences of not worshipping Lord Ram.”
वे गर्जकर शत्रु की सेना के बीच में कूद पड़े और अपने भारी भुजबल से उसका मर्दन करने लगे। किसी की लात से और किसी की थप्पड़ से खबर लेते हैं (और कहते हैं कि) तुम श्री रामजी को नहीं भजते, उसका यह फल लो॥4॥
* एक एक सों मर्दहिं तोरि चलावहिं मुंड।
रावन आगें परहिं ते जनु फूटहिं दधि कुंड॥44॥
Hanuman ji and Angad crushed the demons by smashing them against one another and severing their heads. They hurled those heads with such precision that they landed before Ravan and burst apart like earthen pots filled with curd.
एक को दूसरे से (रगड़कर) मसल डालते हैं और सिरों को तोड़कर फेंकते हैं। वे सिर जाकर रावण के सामने गिरते हैं और ऐसे फूटते हैं, मानो दही के कूंडे फूट रहे हों॥4॥
* महा महा मुखिआ जे पावहिं। ते पद गहि प्रभु पास चलावहिं॥
कहइ बिभीषनु तिन्ह के नामा। देहिं राम तिन्हहू निज धामा॥1॥
If they found a chief commander among the demons, they seized him by the legs and hurled him toward Lord Ram. Vibhishan announced their names to the Lord, and Shri Ram granted them His own abode as their resting place after death.
जिन बड़े-बड़े मुखियों (प्रधान सेनापतियों) को पकड़ पाते हैं, उनके पैर पकड़कर उन्हें प्रभु के पास फेंक देते हैं। विभीषणजी उनके नाम बतलाते हैं और श्री रामजी उन्हें भी अपना धाम (परम पद) दे देते हैं॥1॥
खल मनुजाद द्विजामिष भोगी। पावहिं गति जो जाचत जोगी॥
उमा राम मृदुचित करुनाकर। बयर भाव सुमिरत मोहि निसिचर॥2॥
The vile demons who once devoured Brahmins and lived as man-eaters thus attained a fate that even the most realized Saints long for. Lord Shiv said, “Uma, Lord Ram is exceedingly tender-hearted and a treasure of compassion, and He thought that even if the demons remembered Him with feelings of enmity, they still kept Him in their minds…
ब्राह्मणों का मांस खाने वाले वे नरभोजी दुष्ट राक्षस भी वह परम गति पाते हैं, जिसकी योगी भी याचना किया करते हैं, (परन्तु सहज में नहीं पाते)। (शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे उमा! श्री रामजी बड़े ही कोमल हृदय और करुणा की खान हैं। (वे सोचते हैं कि) राक्षस मुझे वैरभाव से ही सही, स्मरण तो करते ही हैं॥2॥
देहिं परम गति सो जियँ जानी। अस कृपाल को कहहु भवानी॥
अस प्रभु सुनि न भजहिं भ्रम त्यागी। नर मतिमंद ते परम अभागी॥3॥
…Thinking this way, Shri Ram granted them the highest state of liberation. Who can be as kind as Him, O’ Bhawani? If someone hears of such a Lord and still does not give up worldly infatuation to worship Shri Ram, there is no one more dull-witted or more unfortunate than that person.”
ऐसा हृदय में जानकर वे उन्हें परमगति (मोक्ष) देते हैं। हे भवानी! कहो तो ऐसे कृपालु (और) कौन हैं? प्रभु का ऐसा स्वभाव सुनकर भी जो मनुष्य भ्रम त्याग कर उनका भजन नहीं करते, वे अत्यंत मंदबुद्धि और परम भाग्यहीन हैं॥3॥
अंगद अरु हनुमंत प्रबेसा। कीन्ह दुर्ग अस कह अवधेसा॥
लंकाँ द्वौ कपि सोहहिं कैसें। मथहिं सिंधु दुइ मंदर जैसें॥4॥
The Lord of Ayodhya, Shri Ram, said, “Angad and Hanuman have entered the fort, and in their mighty rampage they shine like two Mandrachal mountains churning the ocean.”
श्री रामजी ने कहा कि अंगद और हनुमान किले में घुस गए हैं। दोनों वानर लंका में (विध्वंस करते) कैसे शोभा देते हैं, जैसे दो मन्दराचल समुद्र को मथ रहे हों॥4॥
* भुज बल रिपु दल दलमलि देखि दिवस कर अंत।
कूदे जुगल बिगत श्रम आए जहँ भगवंत॥45॥
With the strength of their arms, Angad and Hanuman ji crushed and battered the enemy troops. As the day drew to a close, the two leapt down from the fort with effortless ease and returned to where Lord Shri Ram was.
भुजाओं के बल से शत्रु की सेना को कुचलकर और मसलकर, फिर दिन का अंत होता देखकर हनुमान् और अंगद दोनों कूद पड़े और श्रम थकावट रहित होकर वहाँ आ गए, जहाँ भगवान् श्री रामजी थे॥45॥
* प्रभु पद कमल सीस तिन्ह नाए। देखि सुभट रघुपति मन भाए॥
राम कृपा करि जुगल निहारे। भए बिगतश्रम परम सुखारे॥1॥
They bowed their heads at the Lord’s lotus feet, and seeing the two warriors, Shri Raghupati felt great joy in His heart. Shri Ram cast a gracious glance upon them, and all their weariness vanished, leaving them filled with deep happiness.
उन्होंने प्रभु के चरण कमलों में सिर नवाए। उत्तम योद्धाओं को देखकर श्री रघुनाथजी मन में बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। श्री रामजी ने कृपा करके दोनों को देखा, जिससे वे श्रमरहित और परम सुखी हो गए॥1॥
गए जानि अंगद हनुमाना। फिरे भालु मर्कट भट नाना॥
जातुधान प्रदोष बल पाई। धाए करि दससीस ई॥2॥
Seeing that Angad and Hanuman ji had left the battlefield, many monkey warriors also began returning to their camp. Meanwhile, with dusk setting in, the demons regained strength and chased after the monkey army, shouting praises of the ten-headed Ravan’s victory.
अंगद और हनुमान् को गए जानकर सभी भालू और वानर वीर लौट पड़े। राक्षसों ने प्रदोष (सायं) काल का बल पाकर रावण की दुहाई देते हुए वानरों पर धावा किया॥2॥
निसिचर अनी देखि कपि फिरे। जहँ तहँ कटकटाइ भट भिरे॥
द्वौ दल प्रबल पचारि पचारी। लरत सुभट नहिं मानहिं हारी॥3॥
Seeing the demon army advancing, the monkeys turned back from all sides, letting out fierce, shrill noises through their teeth. Warriors from both sides clashed with full force. Each army was formidable, challenging the other with equal might, and no one was willing to accept defeat.
राक्षसों की सेना आती देखकर वानर लौट पड़े और वे योद्धा जहाँ-तहाँ कटकटाकर भिड़ गए। दोनों ही दल बड़े बलवान् हैं। योद्धा ललकार-ललकारकर ल़ड़ते हैं, कोई हार नहीं मानते॥3॥
महाबीर निसिचर सब कारे। नाना बरन बलीमुख भारे॥
सबल जुगल दल समबल जोधा। कौतुक करत लरत करि क्रोधा॥4॥
The demons were powerful warriors with dark complexions, while the monkeys were massive in size and appeared in many colours. Both armies were equally formidable, and their warriors matched one another in strength. Displaying their martial skill, they fought with intense fury.
सभी राक्षस महान् वीर और अत्यंत काले हैं और वानर विशालकाय तथा अनेकों रंगों के हैं। दोनों ही दल बलवान् हैं और समान बल वाले योद्धा हैं। वे क्रोध करके लड़ते हैं और खेल करते (वीरता दिखलाते) हैं॥4॥
प्राबिट सरद पयोद घनेरे। लरत मनहुँ मारुत के प्रेरे॥
अनिप अकंपन अरु अतिकाया। बिचलत सेन कीन्हि इन्ह माया॥5॥
It looked as though masses of rain clouds and autumn clouds were crashing into one another, driven by powerful winds. Seeing their armies lose ground, the demon commanders Akampan and Atikay unleashed their illusionary powers.
(राक्षस और वानर युद्ध करते हुए ऐसे जान पड़ते हैं) मानो क्रमशः वर्षा और शरद् ऋतु में बहुत से बादल पवन से प्रेरित होकर लड़ रहे हों। अकंपन और अतिकाय इन सेनापतियों ने अपनी सेना को विचलित होते देखकर माया की॥5॥
भयउ निमिष महँ अति अँधिआरा। बृष्टि होइ रुधिरोपल छारा॥6॥
Within moments, darkness covered everything, and blood, stones, and ashes began to rain down from the sky.
पलभर में अत्यंत अंधकार हो गया। खून, पत्थर और राख की वर्षा होने लगी॥6॥
* देखि निबिड़ तम दसहुँ दिसि कपिदल भयउ खभार।
एकहि एक न देखई जहँ तहँ करहिं पुकार॥46॥
Seeing thick darkness spread in all directions, the monkey army became anxious. It was so dark that they could not even see one another, and cries of fear rose from every side.
दसों दिशाओं में अत्यंत घना अंधकार देखकर वानरों की सेना में खलबली पड़ गई। एक को एक (दूसरा) नहीं देख सकता और सब जहाँ-तहाँ पुकार रहे हैं॥46॥
* सकल मरमु रघुनायक जाना। लिए बोलि अंगद हनुमाना॥
समाचार सब कहि समुझाए। सुनत कोपि कपिकुंजर धाए॥1॥
Lord Raghunayak understood the demons’ ploy and summoned Angad and Hanuman ji. He explained that the demon commanders had created this scene through sorcery and gave them His instructions. Hearing this, the two elephants among monkeys rushed to aid their army.
श्री रघुनाथजी सब रहस्य जान गए। उन्होंने अंगद और हनुमान् को बुला लिया और सब समाचार कहकर समझाया। सुनते ही वे दोनों कपिश्रेष्ठ क्रोध करके दौड़े॥1॥
पुनि कृपाल हँसि चाप चढ़ावा। पावक सायक सपदि चलावा॥
भयउ प्रकास कतहुँ तम नाहीं। ग्यान उदयँ जिमि संसय जाहीं॥2॥
Then the merciful Lord laughed and swiftly strung His bow, releasing a fire arrow. At once, brightness spread everywhere, and not a trace of darkness remained, just as, when the light of wisdom arises, every doubt is dispelled.
फिर कृपालु श्री रामजी ने हँसकर धनुष चलाया और तुरंत ही अग्निबाण चलाया, जिससे प्रकाश हो गया, कहीं अँधेरा नहीं रह गया। जैसे ज्ञान के उदय होने पर (सब प्रकार के) संदेह दूर हो जाते हैं॥2॥
भालु बलीमुख पाई प्रकासा। धाए हरष बिगत श्रम त्रासा॥
हनूमान अंगद रन गाजे। हाँक सुनत रजनीचर भाजे॥3॥
Seeing the brightness, the monkeys and bears ran forward in joy, and all their fatigue disappeared. Hanuman ji and Angad thundered across the battlefield, and at the sound of their mighty roars, the demons fled.
भालू और वानर प्रकाश पाकर श्रम और भय से रहित तथा प्रसन्न होकर दौड़े। हनुमान् और अंगद रण में गरज उठे। उनकी हाँक सुनते ही राक्षस भाग छूटे॥3॥
भागत भट पटकहिं धरि धरनी। करहिं भालु कपि अद्भुत करनी॥
गहि पद डारहिं सागर माहीं। मकर उरग झष धरि धरि खाहीं॥4॥
The monkeys and bears displayed their fierce strength and skill by grabbing the fleeing demon warriors and smashing them down. Then, holding them by their feet, they hurled them into the ocean, where crocodiles, serpents, and fish caught and devoured them.
भागते हुए राक्षस योद्धाओं को वानर और भालू पकड़कर पृथ्वी पर दे मारते हैं और अद्भुत (आश्चर्यजनक) करनी करते हैं (युद्धकौशल दिखलाते हैं)। पैर पकड़कर उन्हें समुद्र में डाल देते हैं। वहाँ मगर, साँप और मच्छ उन्हें पकड़-पकड़कर खा डालते हैं॥4॥
* कछु मारे कछु घायल कछु गढ़ चढ़े पराइ।
गर्जहिं भालु बलीमुख रिपु दल बल बिचलाइ॥47॥
Some demons were killed, others were wounded, and many fled by scrambling back onto the fort. With their immense strength, the monkeys and bears overpowered the demon army, driving them back and roaring loudly in triumph.
कुछ मारे गए, कुछ घायल हुए, कुछ भागकर गढ़ पर चढ़ गए। अपने बल से शत्रुदल को विचलित करके रीछ और वानर (वीर) गरज रहे हैं॥47॥
* निसा जानि कपि चारिउ अनी। आए जहाँ कोसला धनी॥
राम कृपा करि चितवा सबही। भए बिगतश्रम बानर तबही॥1॥
Knowing night had fallen, the four divisions of the army returned to where the Lord of Koshal was. Lord Ram cast a merciful glance upon them, and at once all the monkeys and bears were freed from their fatigue.
रात हुई जानकर वानरों की चारों सेनाएँ (टुकड़ियाँ) वहाँ आईं, जहाँ कोसलपति श्री रामजी थे। श्री रामजी ने ज्यों ही सबको कृपा करके देखा त्यों ही ये वानर श्रमरहित हो गए॥1॥
उहाँ दसानन सचिव हँकारे। सब सन कहेसि सुभट जे मारे॥
आधा कटकु कपिन्ह संघारा। कहहु बेगि का करिअ बिचारा॥2॥
In Lanka, the ten-headed Ravan called all his Ministers together. He informed them of the brave warriors who had been slain and said, “The monkeys have killed half of our army. Now tell me quickly, what plan should we undertake?”
वहाँ (लंका में) रावण ने मंत्रियों को बुलाया और जो योद्धा मारे गए थे, उन सबको सबसे बताया। (उसने कहा-) वानरों ने आधी सेना का संहार कर दिया! अब शीघ्र बताओ, क्या विचार (उपाय) करना चाहिए?॥2॥
