तिर्यक् योनि (पशु-पक्षी), देवता या मनुष्य का, जो भी शरीर धारण करता, वहाँ-वहाँ (उस-उस शरीर में) मैं श्री रामजी का भजन जारी रखता। (इस प्रकार मैं सुखी हो गया), परंतु एक शूल मुझे बना रहा। गुरुजी का कोमल, सुशील स्वभाव मुझे कभी नहीं भूलता (अर्थात् मैंने ऐसे कोमल स्वभाव दयालु गुरु का अपमान किया, यह दुःख मुझे सदा बना रहा)॥1॥
चरम देह द्विज कै मैं पाई। सुर दुर्लभ पुरान श्रुति गाई॥
खेलउँ तहूँ बालकन्ह मीला। करउँ सकल रघुनायक लीला॥2॥

प्रौढ़ भएँ मोहि पिता पढ़ावा। समझउँ सुनउँ गुनउँ नहिं भावा॥
मन ते सकल बासना भागी। केवल राम चरन लय लागी॥3॥

I listened with care, sought to understand, and reflected deeply upon his teachings; yet none could truly engage my mind. सयाना होने पर पिताजी मुझे पढ़ाने लगे। मैं समझता, सुनता और विचारता, पर मुझे पढ़ना अच्छा नहीं लगता था। मेरे मन से सारी वासनाएँ भाग गईं। केवल श्री रामजी के चरणों में लव लग गई॥3॥
कहु खगेस अस कवन अभागी। खरी सेव सुरधेनुहि त्यागी॥
प्रेम मगन मोहि कछु न सोहाई। हारेउ पिता पढ़ाइ पढ़ाई॥4॥
…Tell me, O’ King of Birds, who could be so wretched as to forsake Kamdhenu, the wish-fulfilling celestial cow, and choose instead to serve a donkey? Immersed in boundless love for Lord Ram, nothing else could delight my heart, and my father, wearied by instructing me again and again, grew disheartened…
हे गरुड़जी! कहिए, ऐसा कौन अभागा होगा जो कामधेनु को छोड़कर गदही की सेवा करेगा? प्रेम में मग्न रहने के कारण मुझे कुछ भी नहीं सुहाता। पिताजी पढ़ा-पढ़ाकर हार गए॥4॥
भय कालबस जब पितु माता। मैं बन गयउँ भजन जनत्राता॥
जहँ जहँ बिपिन मुनीस्वर पावउँ। आश्रम जाइ जाइ सिरु नावउँ॥5॥

बूझउँ तिन्हहि राम गुन गाहा। कहहिं सुनउँ हरषित खगनाहा॥
सुनत फिरउँ हरि गुन अनुबादा। अब्याहत गति संभु प्रसादा॥6॥

हे गरुड़जी ! उनसे मैं श्री रामजी के गुणों की कथाएँ पूछता। वे कहते और मैं हर्षित होकर सुनता। इस प्रकार मैं सदा-सर्वदा श्री हरि के गुणानुवाद सुनता फिरता। शिवजी की कृपा से मेरी सर्वत्र अबाधित गति थी (अर्थात् मैं जहाँ चाहता वहीं जा सकता था)॥6॥
छूटी त्रिबिधि ईषना गाढ़ी। एक लालसा उर अति बाढ़ी॥
राम चरन बारिज जब देखौं। तब निज जन्म सफल करि लेखौं॥7॥
…My three deepest worldly longings (for progeny, for wealth, and for renown) had completely dissolved; yet my heart yearned ever more intensely to behold the lotus feet of Lord Ram. Only then would I deem the true purpose of my life fulfilled…
मेरी तीनों प्रकार की (पुत्र की, धन की और मान की) गहरी प्रबल वासनाएँ छूट गईं और हृदय में एक यही लालसा अत्यंत बढ़ गई कि जब श्री रामजी के चरणकमलों के दर्शन करूँ तब अपना जन्म सफल हुआ समझूँ॥7॥
जेहि पूँछउँ सोइ मुनि अस कहई। ईस्वर सर्ब भूतमय अहई॥
निर्गुन मत नहिं मोहि सोहाई। सगुन ब्रह्म रति उर अधिकाई॥8॥

* गुर के बचन सुरति करि राम चरन मनु लाग।
रघुपति जस गावत फिरउँ छन छन नव अनुराग॥110क॥

गुरुजी के वचनों का स्मरण करके मेरा मन श्री रामजी के चरणों में लग गया। मैं क्षण-क्षण नया-नया प्रेम प्राप्त करता हुआ श्री रघुनाथजी का यश गाता फिरता था॥110क॥
मेरु सिखर बट छायाँ मुनि लोमस आसीन।
देखि चरन सिरु नायउँ बचन कहेउँ अति दीन॥110ख॥

सुनि मम बचन बिनीत मृदु मुनि कृपाल खगराज।
मोहि सादर पूँछत भए द्विज आयहु केहि काज॥110ग॥

हे पक्षीराज! मेरे अत्यंत नम्र और कोमल वचन सुनकर कृपालु मुनि मुझसे आदर के साथ पूछने लगे- हे ब्राह्मण! आप किस कार्य से यहाँ आए हैं॥110ग॥
तब मैं कहा कृपानिधि तुम्ह सर्बग्य सुजान।
सगुन ब्रह्म अवराधन मोहि कहहु भगवान॥110घ॥
…Thereupon I replied, “O’ Ocean of Mercy, You are all-knowing and supremely wise. O’ Lord, I pray that You instruct me in the proper method of worshipping the Supreme Lord in His embodied form.”…
तब मैंने कहा- हे कृपा निधि! आप सर्वज्ञ हैं और सुजान हैं। हे भगवान् मुझे सगुण ब्रह्म की आराधना (की प्रक्रिया) कहिए। 110घ॥
* तब मुनीस रघुपति गुन गाथा। कहे कछुक सादर खगनाथा॥
ब्रह्मग्यान रत मुनि बिग्यानी। मोहि परम अधिकारी जानी॥1॥
…O’ King of Birds, the venerable Sage first reverently narrated the sacred exploits of Shri Raghupati. Yet, being himself deeply absorbed in the realization of Supreme Brahm, the enlightened Sage regarded me as a worthy recipient of higher wisdom…
तब हे पक्षीराज! मुनीश्वर ने श्री रघुनाथजी के गुणों की कुछ कथाएँ आदर सहित कहीं। फिर वे ब्रह्मज्ञान परायण विज्ञानवान् मुनि मुझे परम अधिकारी जानकर-॥1॥
लागे करन ब्रह्म उपदेसा। अज अद्वैत अगुन हृदयेसा॥
अकल अनीह अनाम अरूपा। अनुभव गम्य अखंड अनूपा॥2॥
…and began to expound upon the nature of Absolute, saying that He is unborn, non-dual, without material attributes, and the indwelling Lord, the knower of every heart. No intellect can measure Him; He is desireless, without name and without form, knowable only through direct spiritual experience, indivisible, and beyond all comparison…
ब्रह्म का उपदेश करने लगे कि वह अजन्मा है, अद्वैत है, निर्गुण है और हृदय का स्वामी (अंतर्यामी) है। उसे कोई बुद्धि के द्वारा माप नहीं सकता, वह इच्छारहित, नामरहित, रूपरहित, अनुभव से जानने योग्य, अखण्ड और उपमारहित है॥2॥
मन गोतीत अमल अबिनासी। निर्बिकार निरवधि सुख रासी॥
सो तैं ताहि तोहि नहिं भेदा। बारि बीचि इव गावहिं बेदा॥3॥
…He is beyond the reach of the mind and senses, ever pure, indestructible, immutable, infinite, and the very embodiment of eternal bliss. Then the Sage declared, “All that I have thus described is none other than your own true Self, for there exists no distinction between you and the Lord, just as there is no separation between water and its wave, so proclaim the Vedas.”…
वह मन और इंद्रियों से परे, निर्मल, विनाशरहित, निर्विकार, सीमारहित और सुख की राशि है। वेद ऐसा गाते हैं कि वही तू है, (तत्वमसि), जल और जल की लहर की भाँति उसमें और तुझमें कोई भेद नहीं है॥3॥
बिबिधि भाँति मोहि मुनि समुझावा। निर्गुन मत मम हृदयँ न आवा॥
पुनि मैं कहेउँ नाइ पद सीसा। सगुन उपासन कहहु मुनीसा॥4॥
…The Sage instructed me in many ways; yet the doctrine that the individual soul is identical with the Absolute, devoid of all material form, found no acceptance in my heart. Bowing at his sacred feet, I once more entreated him with humility, “O’ Great Sage, kindly teach me the path of worshipping the Lord in His embodied form…
मुनि ने मुझे अनेकों प्रकार से समझाया, पर निर्गुण मत मेरे हृदय में नहीं बैठा। मैंने फिर मुनि के चरणों में सिर नवाकर कहा- हे मुनीश्वर! मुझे सगुण ब्रह्म की उपासना कहिए॥4॥
राम भगति जल मम मन मीना। किमि बिलगाइ मुनीस प्रबीना॥
सोइ उपदेस कहहु करि दाया। निज नयनन्हि देखौं रघुराया॥5॥
…My heart is like a fish dwelling in the waters of Lord Ram’s devotion; how can it survive apart from them, O’ Wisest among Sages? Be gracious, therefore, and instruct me in the means by which I may behold Shri Raghuveer with my own eyes…
मेरा मन रामभक्ति रूपी जल में मछली हो रहा है (उसी में रम रहा है)। हे चतुर मुनीश्वर ऐसी दशा में वह उससे अलग कैसे हो सकता है? आप दया करके मुझे वही उपदेश (उपाय) कहिए जिससे मैं श्री रघुनाथजी को अपनी आँखों से देख सकूँ॥5॥
भरि लोचन बिलोकि अवधेसा। तब सुनिहउँ निर्गुन उपदेसा॥
मुनि पुनि कहि हरिकथा अनूपा। खंडि सगुन मत अगुन निरूपा॥6॥
…Only after I have feasted my eyes upon the Lord of Ayodhya shall I listen to your discourse on the attributeless Absolute.” Thereupon, the Sage once again narrated the incomparable exploits of Lord Hari; yet, setting aside the vision of the Lord’s manifest form, he continued to expound upon the formless essence of the Supreme Being…
(पहले) नेत्र भरकर श्री अयोध्यानाथ को देखकर, तब निर्गुण का उपदेश सुनूँगा। मुनि ने फिर अनुपम हरिकथा कहकर, सगुण मत का खण्डन करके निर्गुण का निरूपण किया॥6॥
तब मैं निर्गुन मत कर दूरी। सगुन निरूपउँ करि हठ भूरी॥
उत्तर प्रतिउत्तर मैं कीन्हा। मुनि तन भए क्रोध के चीन्हा॥7॥
…Thereupon, I firmly redirected the discourse from the attributeless Absolute to the Lord’s embodied form. I responded to each of the Sage’s arguments with reasoned replies of my own. At that moment, visible signs of displeasure began to appear upon the Sage’s countenance…
तब मैं निर्गुण मत को हटाकर (काटकर) बहुत हठ करके सगुण का निरूपण करने लगा। मैंने उत्तर-प्रत्युत्तर किया, इससे मुनि के शरीर में क्रोध के चिह्न उत्पन्न हो गए॥7॥
सुनु प्रभु बहुत अवग्या किएँ। उपज क्रोध ग्यानिन्ह के हिएँ॥
अति संघरषन जौं कर कोई। अनल प्रगट चंदन ते होई॥8॥
…Listen, O’ Lord, persistent defiance can awaken anger even within the heart of the enlightened. Excessive friction can kindle fire, even from the cool and fragrant wood of sandalwood…
हे प्रभो! सुनिए, बहुत अपमान करने पर ज्ञानी के भी हृदय में क्रोध उत्पन्न हो जाता है। यदि कोई चंदन की लकड़ी को बहुत अधिक रग़ड़े, तो उससे भी अग्नि प्रकट हो जाएगी॥8॥
*बारंबार सकोप मुनि करइ निरूपन ग्यान।
मैं अपनें मन बैठ तब करउँ बिबिधि अनुमान॥111क॥

मुनि बार-बार क्रोध सहित ज्ञान का निरूपण करने लगे। तब मैं बैठा-बैठा अपने मन में अनेकों प्रकार के अनुमान करने लगा॥111क॥
क्रोध कि द्वैतबुद्धि बिनु द्वैत कि बिनु अग्यान।
मायाबस परिछिन्न जड़ जीव कि ईस समान॥111ख॥
…Can anger arise where no sense of duality abides in the mind? And can duality exist without ignorance? How then can the deluded, independent living entity, bound by the spell of Maya, ever be deemed equal to the Lord?…
बिना द्वैतबुद्धि के क्रोध कैसा और बिना अज्ञान के क्या द्वैतबुद्धि हो सकती है? माया के वश रहने वाला परिच्छिन्न जड़ जीव क्या ईश्वर के समान हो सकता है?॥111ख॥
कबहुँ कि दुःख सब कर हित ताकें। तेहि कि दरिद्र परस मनि जाकें॥
परद्रोही की होहिं निसंका। कामी पुनि कि रहहिं अकलंका॥1॥
…Can there be any sorrow in sincerely desiring the welfare of all beings? Can one remain poor while holding the philosopher’s stone that turns iron into gold at a mere touch? Can a person who harbours hostility toward others ever be free from fear? And can one given to lust ever remain truly unblemished?…
सबका हित चाहने से क्या कभी दुःख हो सकता है? जिसके पास पारसमणि है, उसके पास क्या दरिद्रता रह सकती है? दूसरे से द्रोह करने वाले क्या निर्भय हो सकते हैं और कामी क्या कलंकरहित (बेदाग) रह सकते हैं?॥1॥
बंस कि रह द्विज अनहित कीन्हें। कर्म की होहिं स्वरूपहि चीन्हें॥
काहू सुमति कि खल सँग जामी। सुभ गति पाव कि परत्रिय गामी॥2॥
…Can a clan survive after causing harm to Brahmins? Can one continue performing actions with attachment even after attaining self-realization? Has anyone ever developed a good intellect by associating with the vile? Can a person indulging in adultery attain a noble destiny?…
ब्राह्मण का बुरा करने से क्या वंश रह सकता है? स्वरूप की पहिचान (आत्मज्ञान) होने पर क्या (आसक्तिपूर्वक) कर्म हो सकते हैं? दुष्टों के संग से क्या किसी के सुबुद्धि उत्पन्न हुई है? परस्त्रीगामी क्या उत्तम गति पा सकता है?॥2॥
भव कि परहिं परमात्मा बिंदक। सुखी कि होहिं कबहुँ हरि निंदक॥
राजु कि रहइ नीति बिनु जानें। अघ कि रहहिं हरि चरित बखानें॥3॥
…Can one who has realized the Supreme Lord ever fall back into the ocean of mundane existence? Can a person who insults Lord Hari ever find true happiness? Can a Kingdom endure without the wisdom of righteous statecraft? Can sins remain after recounting the glorious exploits of Lord Hari?…
परमात्मा को जानने वाले कहीं जन्म-मरण (के चक्कर) में पड़ सकते हैं? भगवान् की निंदा करने वाले कभी सुखी हो सकते हैं? नीति बिना जाने क्या राज्य रह सकता है? श्री हरि के चरित्र वर्णन करने पर क्या पाप रह सकते हैं?॥3॥
पावन जस कि पुन्य बिनु होई। बिनु अघ अजस कि पावइ कोई॥
लाभु कि किछु हरि भगति समाना। जेहि गावहिं श्रुति संत पुराना॥4॥
…Can anyone attain pious fame without performing good deeds? Can one incur ill repute without committing sin? Is there any treasure as precious as devotion to Lord Hari, who is glorified by the Vedas, the Sages, and the Puranas?…
बिना पुण्य के क्या पवित्र यश (प्राप्त) हो सकता है? बिना पाप के भी क्या कोई अपयश पा सकता है? जिसकी महिमा वेद, संत और पुराण गाते हैं और उस हरि भक्ति के समान क्या कोई दूसरा लाभ भी है?॥4॥
हानि कि जग एहि सम किछु भाई। भजिअ न रामहि नर तनु पाई॥
अघ कि पिसुनता सम कछु आना। धर्म कि दया सरिस हरिजाना॥5॥
…O’ Brother, is there any greater loss in this world than failing to worship Lord Ram even after attaining a human birth? Can there be a sin greater than slander, or a virtue higher than compassion, O’ Mount of Lord Hari?…
हे भाई! जगत् में क्या इसके समान दूसरी भी कोई हानि है कि मनुष्य का शरीर पाकर भी श्री रामजी का भजन न किया जाए? चुगलखोरी के समान क्या कोई दूसरा पाप है? और हे गरुड़जी! दया के समान क्या कोई दूसरा धर्म है?॥5॥
एहि बिधि अमिति जुगुति मन गुनऊँ। मुनि उपदेस न सादर सुनउँ॥
पुनि पुनि सगुन पच्छ मैं रोपा। तब मुनि बोलेउ बचन सकोपा॥6॥
…In this way, I considered countless arguments within my heart, without listening to the Sage’s teachings with due reverence. Again and again, I upheld the embodied form of the Supreme Lord, until at last the Sage, stirred to anger, spoke these words,…
इस प्रकार मैं अनगिनत युक्तियाँ मन में विचारता था और आदर के साथ मुनि का उपदेश नहीं सुनता था। जब मैंने बार-बार सगुण का पक्ष स्थापित किया, तब मुनि क्रोधयुक्त वचन बोले- ॥6॥
मूढ़ परम सिख देउँ न मानसि। उत्तर प्रतिउत्तर बहु आनसि॥
सत्य बचन बिस्वास न करही। बायस इव सबही ते डरही॥7॥
…“O’ Fool, even after imparting to you the supreme knowledge, you have not embraced it. Instead, you persist in endless arguments and counterarguments. Bereft of faith in the Truth, you behold everything with suspicion, like a crow…
अरे मूढ़! मैं तुझे सर्वोत्तम शिक्षा देता हूँ, तो भी तू उसे नहीं मानता और बहुत से उत्तर-प्रत्युत्तर (दलीलें) लाकर रखता है। मेरे सत्य वचन पर विश्वास नहीं करता। कौए की भाँति सभी से डरता है॥7॥
सठ स्वपच्छ तव हृदयँ बिसाला। सपदि होहि पच्छी चंडाला॥
लीन्ह श्राप मैं सीस चढ़ाई। नहिं कछु भय न दीनता आई॥8॥
…Fool, you are excessively stubborn and self-opinionated; therefore, you shall at once become a flesh-eating bird, a crow.” I accepted the Sage’s curse with humility, feeling neither fear nor remorse over my fate…
अरे मूर्ख! तेरे हृदय में अपने पक्ष का बड़ा भारी हठ है, अतः तू शीघ्र चाण्डाल पक्षी (कौआ) हो जा। मैंने आनंद के साथ मुनि के शाप को सिर पर चढ़ा लिया। उससे मुझे न कुछ भय हुआ, न दीनता ही आई॥8॥
* तुरत भयउँ मैं काग तब पुनि मुनि पद सिरु नाइ।
सुमिरि राम रघुबंस मनि हरषित चलेउँ उड़ाइ॥112क॥
…In that very instant, I was transformed into a crow. Bowing once more at the Sage’s feet, I fixed my mind upon Shri Ram, the crown jewel of Raghu’s lineage, and filled with joy, I took flight…
तब मैं तुरंत ही कौआ हो गया। फिर मुनि के चरणों में सिर नवाकर और रघुकुल शिरोमणि श्री रामजी का स्मरण करके मैं हर्षित होकर उड़ चला॥112क॥
उमा जे राम चरन रत बिगत काम मद क्रोध।
निज प्रभुमय देखहिं जगत केहि सन करहिं बिरोध॥112ख॥
Lord Shiv said to Parvati ji, “O’ Uma, those who are devoted to the lotus feet of Lord Ram, and are free from worldly desires, false pride, and anger, behold their Lord pervading all creation. How then could they harbour hostility toward anyone?”
(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे उमा! जो श्री रामजी के चरणों के प्रेमी हैं और काम, अभिमान तथा क्रोध से रहित हैं, वे जगत् को अपने प्रभु से भरा हुआ देखते हैं, फिर वे किससे वैर करें॥112ख॥
* सुनु खगेस नहिं कछु रिषि दूषन। उर प्रेरक रघुबंस बिभूषन॥
कृपासिंधु मुनि मति करि भोरी। लीन्ही प्रेम परिच्छा मोरी॥1॥
