*एहि प्रकार बल मनहि देखाई। करिहउँ रघुपति कथा सुहाई॥
ब्यास आदि कबि पुंगव नाना। जिन्ह सादर हरि सुजस बखाना॥1॥
Reflecting on this strength, I reassure my heart and set forth to narrate the beautiful tale of Shri Ram, Shri Ram. Rishi Vyas and many exalted poets have reverently sung of the glorious fame of Lord Hari, paving the way for this humble endeavour.
इस प्रकार मन को बल दिखलाकर मैं श्री रघुनाथजी की सुहावनी कथा की रचना करूँगा। व्यास आदि जो अनेकों श्रेष्ठ कवि हो गए हैं, जिन्होंने बड़े आदर से श्री हरि का सुयश वर्णन किया है॥1॥
चरन कमल बंदउँ तिन्ह केरे। पुरवहुँ सकल मनोरथ मेरे॥
कलि के कबिन्ह करउँ परनामा। जिन्ह बरने रघुपति गुन ग्रामा॥2॥
I humbly bow to these supreme poets and beseech them to grant the fulfilment of all my heart’s desires. I also offer bow to the poets of Kaliyug who have narrated the divine qualities of Shri Ram, Shri Ram, with devotion and reverence.
मैं उन सब (श्रेष्ठ कवियों) के चरणकमलों में प्रणाम करता हूँ, वे मेरे सब मनोरथों को पूरा करें। कलियुग के भी उन कवियों को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिन्होंने श्री रघुनाथजी के गुण समूहों का वर्णन किया है॥2॥
जे प्राकृत कबि परम सयाने। भाषाँ जिन्ह हरि चरित बखाने॥
भए जे अहहिं जे होइहहिं आगें। प्रनवउँ सबहि कपट सब त्यागें॥3॥
I humbly bow, with a sincere and pure heart, to all the wise poets of the present who have narrated the character of Lord Ram in local languages. I also offer my regards to the poets of the past and to those who will be born in the future, honouring their devotion and contributions to glorifying Shri Ram.
जो बड़े बुद्धिमान प्राकृत कवि हैं, जिन्होंने भाषा में हरि चरित्रों का वर्णन किया है, जो ऐसे कवि पहले हो चुके हैं, जो इस समय वर्तमान हैं और जो आगे होंगे, उन सबको मैं सारा कपट त्यागकर प्रणाम करता हूँ॥3॥
होहु प्रसन्न देहु बरदानू। साधु समाज भनिति सनमानू॥
जो प्रबंध बुध नहिं आदरहीं। सो श्रम बादि बाल कबि करहीं॥4॥
May all of you be pleased with me and bestow upon me the boon that my poetry finds honour in the assembly of saints. For if the wise and learned scholars do not value the work, it becomes a futile endeavour, the effort of an unrefined poet without merit.
आप सब प्रसन्न होकर यह वरदान दीजिए कि साधु समाज में मेरी कविता का सम्मान हो, क्योंकि बुद्धिमान लोग जिस कविता का आदर नहीं करते, मूर्ख कवि ही उसकी रचना का व्यर्थ परिश्रम करते हैं॥4॥
कीरति भनिति भूति भलि सोई। सुरसरि सम सब कहँ हित होई॥
राम सुकीरति भनिति भदेसा। असमंजस अस मोहि अँदेसा॥5॥
Fame, composition, and wealth are only meaningful when they bring benefit to others, just like the sacred river Ganga. The fame of Shri Ram is both beautiful and uplifting, but I fear my composition lacks such beauty. This dilemma weighs heavily on my heart and fills me with anxiety.
कीर्ति, कविता और सम्पत्ति वही उत्तम है, जो गंगाजी की तरह सबका हित करने वाली हो। श्री रामचन्द्रजी की कीर्ति तो बड़ी सुंदर (सबका अनन्त कल्याण करने वाली ही) है, परन्तु मेरी कविता भद्दी है। यह असामंजस्य है (अर्थात इन दोनों का मेल नहीं मिलता), इसी की मुझे चिन्ता है॥5॥
तुम्हरी कृपाँ सुलभ सोउ मोरे। सिअनि सुहावनि टाट पटोरे॥6॥
Yet, with your grace, O’ Great poets, this composition will come to life with ease. Just as intricate embroidery with silk threads enhances even coarse cloth, your blessings can make my humble efforts appear beautiful and meaningful.
परन्तु हे कवियों! आपकी कृपा से यह बात भी मेरे लिए सुलभ हो सकती है। रेशम की सिलाई टाट पर भी सुहावनी लगती है॥6॥
* सरल कबित कीरति बिमल सोइ आदरहिं सुजान।
सहज बयर बिसराइ रिपु जो सुनि करहिं बखान॥14क॥
Wise individuals value a composition that is simple, dignified, and expressed in pure, noble words. Such a work, when heard, has the power to dissolve even the deepest animosity, inspiring praise and admiration from foes themselves.
चतुर पुरुष उसी कविता का आदर करते हैं, जो सरल हो और जिसमें निर्मल चरित्र का वर्णन हो तथा जिसे सुनकर शत्रु भी स्वाभाविक बैर को भूलकर सराहना करने लगें॥14क॥
सो न होई बिनु बिमल मति मोहि मति बल अति थोर।
करहु कृपा हरि जस कहउँ पुनि पुनि करउँ निहोर॥14ख॥
Such a feat is impossible without the strength of a pure and focused mind, and my mind lacks that strength. Therefore, I humbly and repeatedly beseech the great poets to show their mercy upon me, blessing me with the grace to narrate the glories of Lord Hari.
ऐसी कविता बिना निर्मल बुद्धि के होती नहीं और मेरी बुद्धि का बल बहुत ही थोड़ा है, इसलिए बार-बार निहोरा करता हूँ कि हे कवियों! आप कृपा करें, जिससे मैं हरि यश का वर्णन कर सकूँ॥14ख॥
कबि कोबिद रघुबर चरित मानस मंजु मराल।
बालबिनय सुनि सुरुचि लखि मो पर होहु कृपाल॥14ग॥
The poets and pundits are like graceful swans in the serene lake of Lord Ram’s divine deeds. I humbly appeal to you, like a child, and with sincere devotion in my heart, I ask you to understand my pure love and shower your mercy upon me.
कवि और पण्डितगण! आप जो रामचरित्र रूपी मानसरोवर के सुंदर हंस हैं, मुझ बालक की विनती सुनकर और सुंदर रुचि देखकर मुझ पर कृपा करें॥14ग॥
* बंदउँ मुनि पद कंजु रामायन जेहिं निरमयउ।
सखर सुकोमल मंजु दोष रहित दूषन सहित॥14 घ॥
I bow to the lotus feet of Sage Valmiki, the revered author of the Ramayan. Though there is a mention of a demon named Khar, symbolizing harshness, the Ramayan itself remains gentle and beautiful. It also speaks of another demon, Dushan, whose name signifies faults, yet the Ramayan is entirely devoid of flaws.
मैं उन वाल्मीकि मुनि के चरण कमलों की वंदना करता हूँ, जिन्होंने रामायण की रचना की है, जो खर (राक्षस) सहित होने पर भी (खर (कठोर) से विपरीत) बड़ी कोमल और सुंदर है तथा जो दूषण (राक्षस) सहित होने पर भी दूषण अर्थात् दोष से रहित है॥14 (घ)॥
बंदउँ चारिउ बेद भव बारिधि बोहित सरिस।
जिन्हहि न सपनेहुँ खेद बरनत रघुबर बिसद जसु॥14 ङ॥
I bow to the four Vedas, the sacred Scriptures that act as a boat to navigate the vast ocean of worldly existence and the endless cycles of birth and death. Even in dreams, the Vedas without any fatigue, tirelessly sing the pure and eternal glory of Shri Ram, the noblest among the Raghus.
मैं चारों वेदों की वन्दना करता हूँ, जो संसार समुद्र के पार होने के लिए जहाज के समान हैं तथा जिन्हें श्री रघुनाथजी का निर्मल यश वर्णन करते स्वप्न में भी खेद (थकावट) नहीं होता॥14 (ङ)॥
बंदउँ बिधि पद रेनु भव सागर जेहिं कीन्ह जहँ।
संत सुधा ससि धेनु प्रगटे खल बिष बारुनी॥14च॥
I bow to the dust of Lord Brahma’s feet, the Creator of the material world through the churning of the Milky Ocean. This churning yielded saintly treasures such as nectar, the Moon, and Kamdhenu (the celestial cow), while also bringing forth wickedness in the form of poison and alcohol.
मैं ब्रह्माजी के चरण रज की वन्दना करता हूँ, जिन्होंने भवसागर बनाया है, जहाँ से एक ओर संतरूपी अमृत, चन्द्रमा और कामधेनु निकले और दूसरी ओर दुष्ट मनुष्य रूपी विष और मदिरा उत्पन्न हुए॥14 (च)॥
* बिबुध बिप्र बुध ग्रह चरन बंदि कहउँ कर जोरि।
होइ प्रसन्न पुरवहु सकल मंजु मनोरथ मोरि॥14 छ॥
I bow to all the Demigods, Brahmins, priests and the deities presiding over the planets. With folded hands, I humbly offer my reverence at their feet and earnestly pray for their grace and blessings so that all the noble desires of my heart may be fulfilled.
देवता, ब्राह्मण, पंडित, ग्रह- इन सबके चरणों की वंदना करके हाथ जोड़कर कहता हूँ कि आप प्रसन्न होकर मेरे सारे सुंदर मनोरथों को पूरा करें॥14 (छ)॥
* पुनि बंदउँ सारद सुरसरिता। जुगल पुनीत मनोहर चरिता॥
मज्जन पान पाप हर एका। कहत सुनत एक हर अबिबेका॥1॥
I offer my prayers to Goddess Saraswati and the celestial river Ganga, both revered for their sanctity and gracious nature. Ganga ji washes away the sins of those who bathe in or drink Her sacred waters, while Saraswati ji dispels the ignorance of those who invoke Her name or sing Her praises.
फिर मैं सरस्वती और देवनदी गंगाजी की वंदना करता हूँ। दोनों पवित्र और मनोहर चरित्र वाली हैं। एक (गंगाजी) स्नान करने और जल पीने से पापों को हरती है और दूसरी (सरस्वतीजी) गुण और यश कहने और सुनने से अज्ञान का नाश कर देती है॥1॥
गुर पितु मातु महेस भवानी। प्रनवउँ दीनबंधु दिन दानी॥
सेवक स्वामि सखा सिय पी के। हित निरुपधि सब बिधि तुलसी के॥2॥
I bow to Lord Mahesh (Shiv ji) and Goddess Parvati, who are my revered Gurus and divine parents, and embody compassion for the distressed and perform daily acts of charity. Lord Shiv serves as the attendant, master, and friend of Sita ji’s husband, Lord Ram. With boundless grace, Lord Mahesh and Goddess Parvati constantly watch over me (Tulsidas ji), ensuring my well-being in every possible way.
श्री महेश और पार्वती को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो मेरे गुरु और माता-पिता हैं, जो दीनबन्धु और नित्य दान करने वाले हैं, जो सीतापति श्री रामचन्द्रजी के सेवक, स्वामी और सखा हैं तथा मुझ तुलसीदास का सब प्रकार से कपटरहित (सच्चा) हित करने वाले हैं॥2॥
कलि बिलोकि जग हित हर गिरिजा। साबर मंत्र जाल जिन्ह सिरिजा॥
अनमिल आखर अरथ न जापू। प्रगट प्रभाउ महेस प्रतापू॥3॥
Observing the sinful nature of the age of Kaliyug and for the welfare of humanity, Lord Shiv and Goddess Parvati composed a series of mantras known as “Saabar Mantras”. These mantras, formed from unrhythmic and enigmatic words, are challenging to interpret and recite. However, their effects are immediate and profound, owing to the boundless glory and divine power of Lord Shiv.
जिन शिव-पार्वती ने कलियुग को देखकर, जगत के हित के लिए, शाबर मन्त्र समूह की रचना की, जिन मंत्रों के अक्षर बेमेल हैं, जिनका न कोई ठीक अर्थ होता है और न जप ही होता है, तथापि श्री शिवजी के प्रताप से जिनका प्रभाव प्रत्यक्ष है॥3॥
सो उमेस मोहि पर अनुकूला। करिहिं कथा मुद मंगल मूला॥
सुमिरि सिवा सिव पाइ पसाऊ। बरनउँ रामचरित चित चाऊ॥4॥
Shiv ji, the Lord of Goddess Parvati, will be pleased with me and bless my composition of Lord Ram to become a source of joy and auspiciousness for all. Having meditated upon Lord Shiv and Goddess Parvati and having received their divine grace, I now begin the recitation of Shri Ramcharitmanas with a heart full of joy and devotion.
वे उमापति शिवजी मुझ पर प्रसन्न होकर (श्री रामजी की) इस कथा को आनन्द और मंगल की मूल (उत्पन्न करने वाली) बनाएँगे। इस प्रकार पार्वतीजी और शिवजी दोनों का स्मरण करके और उनका प्रसाद पाकर मैं चाव भरे चित्त से श्री रामचरित्र का वर्णन करता हूँ॥4॥
भनिति मोरि सिव कृपाँ बिभाती। ससि समाज मिलि मनहुँ सुराती॥
जे एहि कथहि सनेह समेता। कहिहहिं सुनिहहिं समुझि सचेता॥5॥
होइहहिं राम चरन अनुरागी। कलि मल रहित सुमंगल भागी॥6॥
By the grace of Lord Shiv, my composition will radiate its beauty, just as the waxing Moon, adorned by a constellation of stars, enhances the splendour of the night sky. Those who lovingly recite, attentively listen to, and deeply understand this sacred work will attain devotion at the feet of Lord Ram. They will be freed from all the sins of Kaliyug and will become recipients of all virtues and divine blessings.
मेरी कविता श्री शिवजी की कृपा से ऐसी सुशोभित होगी, जैसी तारागणों के सहित चन्द्रमा के साथ रात्रि शोभित होती है, जो इस कथा को प्रेम सहित एवं सावधानी के साथ समझ-बूझकर कहें-सुनेंगे, वे कलियुग के पापों से रहित और सुंदर कल्याण के भागी होकर श्री रामचन्द्रजी के चरणों के प्रेमी बन जाएँगे॥5-6॥
* सपनेहुँ साचेहुँ मोहि पर जौं हर गौरि पसाउ।
तौ फुर होउ जो कहेउँ सब भाषा भनिति प्रभाउ॥15॥
If Lord Har and Goddess Gauri (Shiv ji and Parvati ji) are pleased with me, even in a dream, then all the glory I have expressed in my composition, written in the local Awadhi language, may it all prove to be true.
यदि मुझ पर श्री शिवजी और पार्वतीजी की स्वप्न में भी सचमुच प्रसन्नता हो, तो मैंने इस भाषा कविता का जो प्रभाव कहा है, वह सब सच हो॥15॥
* बंदउँ अवध पुरी अति पावनि। सरजू सरि कलि कलुष नसावनि॥
प्रनवउँ पुर नर नारि बहोरी। ममता जिन्ह पर प्रभुहि न थोरी॥1॥
I bow to Ayodhya, the extremely sacred birthplace of Lord Shri Ram, and to the holy river Sarayu, which washes away the sins of the Kaliyug era. I also bow to all the men and women of Awadh, whose hearts are filled with deep affection and devotion for Lord Ram.
मैं अति पवित्र श्री अयोध्यापुरी और कलियुग के पापों का नाश करने वाली श्री सरयू नदी की वन्दना करता हूँ। फिर अवधपुरी के उन नर-नारियों को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिन पर प्रभु श्री रामचन्द्रजी की ममता थोड़ी नहीं है (अर्थात् बहुत है)॥1॥
सिय निंदक अघ ओघ नसाए। लोक बिसोक बनाइ बसाए॥
बंदउँ कौसल्या दिसि प्राची। कीरति जासु सकल जग माची॥2॥
Lord Ram, in His boundless compassion, even forgave the washerman who had cast aspersions on Sita ji. Not only did Ram ji absolve him of his sins, but He also freed him from guilt and granted him a place in His heavenly abode. I then bow to Mother Kaushalya, whose glory is likened to the radiant eastern horizon from where the Sun rises, spreading her fame far and wide across the world.
उन्होंने (अपनी पुरी में रहने वाले) सीताजी की निंदा करने वाले (धोबी और उसके समर्थक पुर-नर-नारियों) के पाप समूह को नाश कर उनको शोकरहित बनाकर अपने लोक (धाम) में बसा दिया। मैं कौशल्या रूपी पूर्व दिशा की वन्दना करता हूँ, जिसकी कीर्ति समस्त संसार में फैल रही है॥2॥
प्रगटेउ जहँ रघुपति ससि चारू। बिस्व सुखद खल कमल तुसारू॥
दसरथ राउ सहित सब रानी। सुकृत सुमंगल मूरति मानी॥3॥
करउँ प्रनाम करम मन बानी। करहु कृपा सुत सेवक जानी॥
जिन्हहि बिरचि बड़ भयउ बिधाता। महिमा अवधि राम पितु माता॥4॥
Where the beautiful, Moon-like Lord of the Raghu dynasty, Shri Ram, appeared, bringing joy to the entire world, and who is likened to frost for the wicked people in the form of lotuses, I bow in thought, word, and deed to King Dashrath and his queens, who embody all piety and auspiciousness. I humbly seek their grace, knowing that I am a servant of their divine child, Lord Ram. By creating the parents of Lord Ram, even the Creator, Lord Brahma, earned eternal fame, and as the parents of Lord Ram, their glory knows no bounds.
जहाँ (कौशल्या रूपी पूर्व दिशा) से विश्व को सुख देने वाले और दुष्ट रूपी कमलों के लिए पाले के समान श्री रामचन्द्रजी रूपी सुंदर चंद्रमा प्रकट हुए। सब रानियों सहित राजा दशरथजी को पुण्य और सुंदर कल्याण की मूर्ति मानकर मैं मन, वचन और कर्म से प्रणाम करता हूँ। अपने पुत्र का सेवक जानकर वे मुझ पर कृपा करें, जिनको रचकर ब्रह्माजी ने भी बड़ाई पाई तथा जो श्री रामजी के माता और पिता होने के कारण महिमा की सीमा हैं॥3-4॥
* बंदउँ अवध भुआल सत्य प्रेम जेहि राम पद।
बिछुरत दीनदयाल प्रिय तनु तृन इव परिहरेउ॥16॥
I bow to the King of Awadh, Dashrath ji, who possessed unwavering love for the lotus feet of Lord Ram. He willingly gave up his life as effortlessly as discarding a straw of grass when separated from his beloved son, Lord Ram, who is ever compassionate towards the sorrowful and distressed.
मैं अवध के राजा श्री दशरथजी की वन्दना करता हूँ, जिनका श्री रामजी के चरणों में सच्चा प्रेम था, जिन्होंने दीनदयालु प्रभु के बिछुड़ते ही अपने प्यारे शरीर को मामूली तिनके की तरह त्याग दिया॥16॥
* प्रनवउँ परिजन सहित बिदेहू। जाहि राम पद गूढ़ सनेहू॥
जोग भोग महँ राखेउ गोई। राम बिलोकत प्रगटेउ सोई॥1॥
I bow to all family members and relatives, as well as Sita ji’s father, King Videh Raj Janak, who possessed profound devotion to the feet of Lord Ram. Janak ji, whose name “Videh” signifies detachment from the self, was deeply immersed in meditating on the “Nirgun” (formless) aspect of the Lord through the strength of yoga and renunciation of worldly pleasures. Yet, upon beholding Lord Ram, his long-hidden devotion for the “Sagun” (manifested) form of the divine naturally surfaced, revealing his boundless love for the Lord.
मैं परिवार सहित राजा जनकजी को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिनका श्री रामजी के चरणों में गूढ़ प्रेम था, जिसको उन्होंने योग और भोग में छिपा रखा था, परन्तु श्री रामचन्द्रजी को देखते ही वह प्रकट हो गया॥1॥
प्रनवउँ प्रथम भरत के चरना। जासु नेम ब्रत जाइ न बरना॥
राम चरन पंकज मन जासू। लुबुध मधुप इव तजइ न पासू॥2॥
Among the Brothers of Lord Ram, I bow first to the feet of Shri Bharat, whose unparalleled austerity is beyond description. His mind remains steadfast, unwaveringly fixed on the lotus feet of Lord Ram, much like a bumblebee that clings devotedly to a lotus.
(भाइयों में) सबसे पहले मैं श्री भरतजी के चरणों को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जिनका नियम और व्रत वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता तथा जिनका मन श्री रामजी के चरणकमलों में भौंरे की तरह लुभाया हुआ है, कभी उनका पास नहीं छोड़ता॥2॥
बंदउँ लछिमन पद जल जाता। सीतल सुभग भगत सुख दाता॥
रघुपति कीरति बिमल पताका। दंड समान भयउ जस जाका॥3॥
Next, I bow to the lotus feet of Shri Lakshman, who is serene, radiant, and a source of joy to all devotees. His glory stands tall like a flagstaff, upholding and magnifying the sacred flag of Lord Ram’s divine fame.
मैं श्री लक्ष्मणजी के चरण कमलों को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो शीतल सुंदर और भक्तों को सुख देने वाले हैं। श्री रघुनाथजी की कीर्ति रूपी विमल पताका में जिनका (लक्ष्मणजी का) यश (पताका को ऊँचा करके फहराने वाले) दंड के समान हुआ॥3॥
सेष सहस्रसीस जग कारन। जो अवतरेउ भूमि भय टारन॥
सदा सो सानुकूल रह मो पर। कृपासिन्धु सौमित्रि गुनाकर॥4॥
Shri Lakshman is none other than the Serpent-God Sheshnag, the divine being who supports the Universe on his thousand mighty heads and serves as the foundation of creation. He incarnated to alleviate the burden and fears of Mother Earth. O’ Ocean of mercy, beloved son of Sumitra ji, and a treasure trove of virtues, may you always remain gracious and favourably inclined towards me.
जो हजार सिर वाले और जगत के कारण (हजार सिरों पर जगत को धारण कर रखने वाले) शेषजी हैं, जिन्होंने पृथ्वी का भय दूर करने के लिए अवतार लिया, वे गुणों की खान कृपासिन्धु सुमित्रानंदन श्री लक्ष्मणजी मुझ पर सदा प्रसन्न रहें॥4॥
रिपुसूदन पद कमल नमामी। सूर सुसील भरत अनुगामी॥
महाबीर बिनवउँ हनुमाना। राम जासु जस आप बखाना॥5॥
I bow to the lotus feet of Shri Shatrughan, whose name signifies the slayer of enemies. Despite his immense bravery, he is profoundly humble and always follows Bharat ji with utmost devotion. Next, I bow to the valiant Hanuman ji, whose unparalleled glory has been praised by Lord Ram Himself.
मैं श्री शत्रुघ्नजी के चरणकमलों को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो बड़े वीर, सुशील और श्री भरतजी के पीछे चलने वाले हैं। मैं महावीर श्री हनुमानजी की विनती करता हूँ, जिनके यश का श्री रामचन्द्रजी ने स्वयं (अपने श्रीमुख से) वर्णन किया है॥5॥
* प्रनवउँ पवनकुमार खल बन पावक ग्यान घन।
जासु हृदय आगार बसहिं राम सर चाप धर॥17॥
I bow to Hanuman ji, the son of the Wind God, who is like a blazing fire consuming the forest of the wicked. He is the embodiment of wisdom and devotion, and within his heart resides Lord Ram, adorned with His bow and arrow.
मैं पवनकुमार श्री हनुमान्जी को प्रणाम करता हूँ, जो दुष्ट रूपी वन को भस्म करने के लिए अग्निरूप हैं, जो ज्ञान की घनमूर्ति हैं और जिनके हृदय रूपी भवन में धनुष-बाण धारण किए श्री रामजी निवास करते हैं॥17॥
* कपिपति रीछ निसाचर राजा। अंगदादि जे कीस समाजा॥
बंदउँ सब के चरन सुहाए। अधम सरीर राम जिन्ह पाए॥1॥
Next, I bow to the beautiful feet of the Monkey King Sugriv the noble Chief of the Bears Jambvant ji, the righteous Demon King Vibhishan, and the Monkey Prince Shri Angad. I also bow to the countless groups of monkeys and bears in King Sugriv’s army, who, despite being born in lower species of animals and demons, attained the boundless blessings of Shri Ram through their devotion and service.
वानरों के राजा सुग्रीवजी, रीछों के राजा जाम्बवानजी, राक्षसों के राजा विभीषणजी और अंगदजी आदि जितना वानरों का समाज है, सबके सुंदर चरणों की मैं वदना करता हूँ, जिन्होंने अधम (पशु और राक्षस आदि) शरीर में भी श्री रामचन्द्रजी को प्राप्त कर लिया॥1॥
रघुपति चरन उपासक जेते। खग मृग सुर नर असुर समेते॥
बंदउँ पद सरोज सब केरे। जे बिनु काम राम के चेरे॥2॥
I bow to the lotus feet of all beings including animals, birds, Demigods, humans, demons, and others, who are devoted to the feet of Lord Ram, the King of the Raghu dynasty. Their unconditional love and selfless service to Shri Ram, free from any worldly desires, is truly worthy of reverence.
पशु, पक्षी, देवता, मनुष्य, असुर समेत जितने श्री रामजी के चरणों के उपासक हैं, मैं उन सबके चरणकमलों की वंदना करता हूँ, जो श्री रामजी के निष्काम सेवक हैं॥2॥
सुक सनकादि भगत मुनि नारद। जे मुनिबर बिग्यान बिसारद॥
प्रनवउँ सबहि धरनि धरि सीसा। करहु कृपा जन जानि मुनीसा॥3॥
I offer my humble obeisance, with my head bowed to the ground, to all sages along with the devoted scholars of science and spirituality, such as Sukdev ji, Sanak ji, Sanandan ji, Sanatan ji, Sanat Kumar ji, and Narad ji. O’ Revered sages, please accept me as your humble devotee and bestow your mercy upon me.
शुकदेवजी, सनकादि, नारदमुनि आदि जितने भक्त और परम ज्ञानी श्रेष्ठ मुनि हैं, मैं धरती पर सिर टेककर उन सबको प्रणाम करता हूँ, हे मुनीश्वरों! आप सब मुझको अपना दास जानकर कृपा कीजिए॥3॥
जनकसुता जग जननि जानकी। अतिसय प्रिय करुनानिधान की॥
ताके जुग पद कमल मनावउँ। जासु कृपाँ निरमल मति पावउँ॥4॥
I worship the two lotus feet of Mata Janaki ji, the daughter of King Janak, who is the Mother of the Universe and the dearest beloved of Lord Shri Ram, the embodiment of mercy. By Her boundless grace, may I be blessed with a pure and pious mind.
राजा जनक की पुत्री, जगत की माता और करुणा निधान श्री रामचन्द्रजी की प्रियतमा श्री जानकीजी के दोनों चरण कमलों को मैं मनाता हूँ, जिनकी कृपा से निर्मल बुद्धि पाऊँ॥4॥
पुनि मन बचन कर्म रघुनायक। चरन कमल बंदउँ सब लायक॥
राजीवनयन धरें धनु सायक। भगत बिपति भंजन सुखदायक॥5॥
Next, with my mind, words and deeds, I bow to the all-powerful lotus feet of Lord Ram, the King of the Raghu dynasty. His eyes are as beautiful as lotuses, and He holds a bow and arrow in His hands. By worshipping His sacred lotus feet, devotees are freed from all miseries and are blessed with eternal happiness.
फिर मैं मन, वचन और कर्म से कमलनयन, धनुष-बाणधारी, भक्तों की विपत्ति का नाश करने और उन्हें सुख देने वाले भगवान् श्री रघुनाथजी के सर्व समर्थ चरण कमलों की वन्दना करता हूँ॥5॥
* गिरा अरथ जल बीचि सम कहिअत भिन्न न भिन्न।
बंदउँ सीता राम पद जिन्हहि परम प्रिय खिन्न॥18॥
Just as words and their meanings, or water and its waves, appear distinct but are inherently the same, so too are Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. Though they seem separate, they are one in essence. I bow to their lotus feet, to whom the humble and pitiful are most dear.
जो वाणी और उसके अर्थ तथा जल और जल की लहर के समान कहने में अलग-अलग हैं, परन्तु वास्तव में अभिन्न (एक) हैं, उन श्री सीतारामजी के चरणों की मैं वंदना करता हूँ, जिन्हें दीन-दुःखी बहुत ही प्रिय हैं॥18॥
* बंदउँ नाम राम रघुबर को। हेतु कृसानु भानु हिमकर को॥
बिधि हरि हरमय बेद प्रान सो। अगुन अनूपम गुन निधान सो॥1॥
I worship Lord Ram’s name, the supreme among the Raghu clan. Each letter in Lord Ram’s name is the originator of an essential element of life: R is the source of Krushanu (Fire), embodying positive thoughts; A is the source of Bhanu (Sun), representing light; and M is the source of Himkar (Moon), signifying inspiration. Lord Ram embodies the Trinity – Lord Brahma (the Creator), Lord Vishnu (the Preserver), and Lord Shiv (the Destroyer) – and is the very life force of the Vedas. The name “Ram” is without attributes, incomparable, and a treasure trove of all virtues, representing the eternal and boundless divinity.
मैं श्री रघुनाथजी के नाम ‘राम’ की वंदना करता हूँ, जो कृशानु (अग्नि), भानु (सूर्य) और हिमकर (चन्द्रमा) का हेतु अर्थात् ‘र’ ‘आ’ और ‘म’ रूप से बीज है। वह ‘राम’ नाम ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और शिवरूप है। वह वेदों का प्राण है, निर्गुण, उपमारहित और गुणों का भंडार है॥1॥
महामंत्र जोइ जपत महेसू। कासीं मुकुति हेतु उपदेसू॥
महिमा जासु जान गनराऊ। प्रथम पूजिअत नाम प्रभाऊ॥2॥
The “Maha Mantra” (Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram…), chanted by Lord Shiv, is the ultimate chant for salvation. In the sacred city of Kashi, Lord Shiv whispers this divine mantra into the ears of the dying, freeing them from the endless cycles of birth and death. Lord Ganesh, too, recognizes the unparalleled glory of this mantra. It is through the immense power of chanting this sacred mantra that Lord Ganesh has earned the revered position of being worshipped before all other deities.
जो महामंत्र है, जिसे महेश्वर श्री शिवजी जपते हैं और उनके द्वारा जिसका उपदेश काशी में मुक्ति का कारण है तथा जिसकी महिमा को गणेशजी जानते हैं, जो इस ‘राम’ नाम के प्रभाव से ही सबसे पहले पूजे जाते हैं॥2॥
जान आदिकबि नाम प्रतापू। भयउ सुद्ध करि उलटा जापू॥
सहस नाम सम सुनि सिव बानी। जपि जेईं पिय संग भवानी॥3॥
The ancient poet Valmiki ji, one of the most revered sages, experienced the profound transformative power of Lord Ram’s name. Initially, he unknowingly chanted the name in reverse (MRA meaning “death”), but even this reversed utterance carried the divine potency of Lord Ram’s name and purified his soul, transforming him into a pious and enlightened being. Lord Shiv once revealed to Parvati ji the incomparable greatness of Lord Ram’s name, explaining that chanting it just once is equivalent to reciting a thousand names of Lord Vishnu. Deeply moved, Parvati ji joined Shiv ji in continuously chanting Lord Ram’s name, immersing Herself in its boundless divine grace.
आदिकवि श्री वाल्मीकिजी रामनाम के प्रताप को जानते हैं, जो उल्टा नाम (‘मरा’, ‘मरा’) जपकर पवित्र हो गए। श्री शिवजी के इस वचन को सुनकर कि एक राम-नाम सहस्र नाम के समान है, पार्वतीजी सदा अपने पति (श्री शिवजी) के साथ राम-नाम का जप करती रहती हैं॥3॥
हरषे हेतु हेरि हर ही को। किय भूषन तिय भूषन ती को॥
नाम प्रभाउ जान सिव नीको। कालकूट फलु दीन्ह अमी को॥4॥
Seeing Goddess Parvati’s unwavering love and devotion for the name of Lord Ram, Lord Shiv was immensely pleased. In His boundless grace, He honoured Her as the finest chaste woman in the Universe and bestowed upon Her the unique position of being an inseparable part of Himself, assigning the left half of His body to Her (thus together taking the form of Ardhanarishwar), the divine union of Lord Shiv and Parvati ji. Lord Shiv, fully aware of the unparalleled power of Lord Ram’s name, consumed the deadly poison Kalkoot during the churning of the ocean. Transformed by His divine grace, the poison had the effect of nectar, earning Him the name Neelkanth (the Blue-Throated One). By bearing the poison Himself, Lord Shiv became the saviour of the cosmos, demonstrating the infinite strength drawn from Lord Ram’s name.
नाम के प्रति पार्वतीजी के हृदय की ऐसी प्रीति देखकर श्री शिवजी हर्षित हो गए और उन्होंने स्त्रियों में भूषण रूप (पतिव्रताओं में शिरोमणि) पार्वतीजी को अपना भूषण बना लिया। (अर्थात् उन्हें अपने अंग में धारण करके अर्धांगिनी बना लिया)। नाम के प्रभाव को श्री शिवजी भलीभाँति जानते हैं, जिस (प्रभाव) के कारण कालकूट जहर ने उनको अमृत का फल दिया॥4॥
* बरषा रितु रघुपति भगति तुलसी सालि सुदास।
राम नाम बर बरन जुग सावन भादव मास॥19॥
Devotion to Shri Ram is like the nourishing Monsoon season, and Tulsidas ji says that noble devotees are akin to crops. The two syllables, “Ra” and “M”, from Lord Ram’s name symbolize the two vital months (July and August) of the Monsoon season.
श्री रघुनाथजी की भक्ति वर्षा ऋतु है, तुलसीदासजी कहते हैं कि उत्तम सेवकगण धान हैं और ‘राम’ नाम के दो सुंदर अक्षर सावन-भादो के महीने हैं॥19॥
* आखर मधुर मनोहर दोऊ। बरन बिलोचन जन जिय जोऊ॥
ससुमिरत सुलभ सुखद सब काहू। लोक लाहु परलोक निबाहू॥1॥
Both syllables, “Ra” and “M”, are sweet and deeply pleasing to the heart. If the alphabet were likened to a body, “Ra” and “M” would be its eyes—the very essence of life for devotees. By meditating on these two sacred syllables, devotees effortlessly attain all joys and benefits in this world, ultimately achieving liberation or an eternal relationship with the Lord in His divine abode.
दोनों अक्षर मधुर और मनोहर हैं, जो वर्णमाला रूपी शरीर के नेत्र हैं, भक्तों के जीवन हैं तथा स्मरण करने में सबके लिए सुलभ और सुख देने वाले हैं और जो इस लोक में लाभ और परलोक में निर्वाह करते हैं (अर्थात् भगवान के दिव्य धाम में दिव्य देह से सदा भगवत्सेवा में नियुक्त रखते हैं।)॥1॥
कहत सुनत सुमिरत सुठि नीके। राम लखन सम प्रिय तुलसी के॥
बरनत बरन प्रीति बिलगाती। ब्रह्म जीव सम सहज सँघाती॥2॥
Reciting, hearing, or remembering the two syllables “Ra” and “M” is as sweet and beautiful to Tulsidas ji as the presence of the two Brothers, Ram ji and Lakshman ji. When spoken separately, these syllables differ in sound and effect, yet together, they symbolize the perfect union of Brahm (the Supreme Being) and Jiva (the individual soul), eternal companions by their very nature.
ये कहने, सुनने और स्मरण करने में बहुत ही अच्छे (सुंदर और मधुर) हैं, तुलसीदास को तो श्री राम-लक्ष्मण के समान प्यारे हैं। इनका (‘र’ और ‘म’ का) अलग-अलग वर्णन करने में प्रीति बिलगाती है (अर्थात बीज मंत्र की दृष्टि से इनके उच्चारण, अर्थ और फल में भिन्नता दिख पड़ती है), परन्तु हैं ये जीव और ब्रह्म के समान स्वभाव से ही साथ रहने वाले (सदा एक रूप और एक रस),॥2॥
नर नारायन सरिस सुभ्राता। जग पालक बिसेषि जन त्राता॥
भगति सुतिय कल करन बिभूषन। जग हित हेतु बिमल बिधु पूषन॥3॥
The two syllables, “Ra” and “M”, are akin to the divine Rishi brothers, Nar and Narayan, who sustain the world and offer special protection to devotees. If bhakti (devotion) were likened to a graceful woman, these syllables would be her exquisite earrings, enhancing her beauty. For the welfare of the world, “Ra” and “M” shine like the sacred Moon and Sun.
ये दोनों अक्षर नर-नारायण के समान सुंदर भाई हैं, ये जगत का पालन और विशेष रूप से भक्तों की रक्षा करने वाले हैं। ये भक्ति रूपिणी सुंदर स्त्री के कानों के सुंदर आभूषण (कर्णफूल) हैं और जगत के हित के लिए निर्मल चन्द्रमा और सूर्य हैं॥3॥
स्वाद तोष सम सुगति सुधा के। कमठ सेष सम धर बसुधा के॥
जन मन मंजु कंज मधुकर से। जीह जसोमति हरि हलधर से॥4॥
To attain the bliss of liberation, the two syllables “Ra” and “M” are like divine nectar—sweet, satisfying, and fulfilling. They are akin to the celestial Tortoise and the Serpent God Shesha, steadfastly supporting the Earth. These sacred syllables are like bumblebees, delightfully hovering around the lotus-like hearts of devotees. If the tongue were compared to mother Yashoda, then “Ra” and “M” would be her beloved sons, Lord Krishna and Lord Balram, embodying divine joy and love.
ये सुंदर गति (मोक्ष) रूपी अमृत के स्वाद और तृप्ति के समान हैं, कच्छप और शेषजी के समान पृथ्वी के धारण करने वाले हैं, भक्तों के मन रूपी सुंदर कमल में विहार करने वाले भौंरे के समान हैं और जीभ रूपी यशोदाजी (श्री कृष्ण की माता) के लिए श्री कृष्ण और बलरामजी के समान (आनंद देने वाले) हैं॥4॥
* एकु छत्रु एकु मुकुटमनि सब बरननि पर जोउ।
तुलसी रघुबर नाम के बरन बिराजत दोउ॥20॥
Tulsidas ji proclaims that the two syllables, “Ra” and “M”, which form the name of the Chief of the Raghus, Lord Ram, reign supreme over all letters of the alphabet, one extending like a protective umbrella and the other adorning it as a crest jewel.
तुलसीदासजी कहते हैं- श्री रघुनाथजी के नाम के दोनों अक्षर बड़ी शोभा देते हैं, जिनमें से एक (रकार) छत्ररूप (रेफ र्) से और दूसरा (मकार) मुकुटमणि (अनुस्वार) रूप से सब अक्षरों के ऊपर है॥20॥
* समुझत सरिस नाम अरु नामी। प्रीति परसपर प्रभु अनुगामी॥
नाम रूप दुइ ईस उपाधी। अकथ अनादि सुसामुझि साधी॥1॥
The name “Ram” and Shri Ram are one and the same, intricately intertwined such that the Lord follows His name, whenever His name is chanted, Lord Ram manifests. Both the name and the form are titles of the same divine Lord, transcending simple expression, without beginning or end. Their profound essence can only be understood by a pure and pious heart.
समझने में नाम और नामी दोनों एक से हैं, किन्तु दोनों में परस्पर स्वामी और सेवक के समान प्रीति है (अर्थात् नाम और नामी में पूर्ण एकता होने पर भी जैसे स्वामी के पीछे सेवक चलता है, उसी प्रकार नाम के पीछे नामी चलते हैं। प्रभु श्री रामजी अपने ‘राम’ नाम का ही अनुगमन करते हैं (नाम लेते ही वहाँ आ जाते हैं)। नाम और रूप दोनों ईश्वर की उपाधि हैं, ये (भगवान के नाम और रूप) दोनों अनिर्वचनीय हैं, अनादि हैं और सुंदर (शुद्ध भक्तियुक्त) बुद्धि से ही इनका (दिव्य अविनाशी) स्वरूप जानने में आता है॥1॥
को बड़ छोट कहत अपराधू। सुनि गुन भेदु समुझिहहिं साधू॥
देखिअहिं रूप नाम आधीना। रूप ग्यान नहिं नाम बिहीना॥2॥
It is improper to declare one as superior or inferior or to draw any comparison between the name and the form of Lord Ram. Upon hearing the unique merits of both, pious souls can reflect and discern their significance. The form of Lord Ram is, in a way, subordinate to His name, as one cannot envision His divine form without invoking His sacred name.
इन (नाम और रूप) में कौन बड़ा है, कौन छोटा, यह कहना तो अपराध है। इनके गुणों का तारतम्य (कमी-बेशी) सुनकर साधु पुरुष स्वयं ही समझ लेंगे। रूप नाम के अधीन देखे जाते हैं, नाम के बिना रूप का ज्ञान नहीं हो सकता॥2॥
रूप बिसेष नाम बिनु जानें। करतल गत न परहिं पहिचानें॥
सुमिरिअ नाम रूप बिनु देखें। आवत हृदयँ सनेह बिसेषें॥3॥
A form placed on one’s palm cannot be fully understood without knowing its name. Conversely, by meditating solely on the name, even without seeing the form, the form lovingly manifests within one’s heart.
कोई सा विशेष रूप बिना उसका नाम जाने हथेली पर रखा हुआ भी पहचाना नहीं जा सकता और रूप के बिना देखे भी नाम का स्मरण किया जाए तो विशेष प्रेम के साथ वह रूप हृदय में आ जाता है॥3॥
नाम रूप गति अकथ कहानी। समुझत सुखद न परति बखानी॥
अगुन सगुन बिच नाम सुसाखी। उभय प्रबोधक चतुर दुभाषी॥4॥
The tales of the glory of the name and the form are beyond expression, though delightful to grasp, they transcend verbal description. The name serves as a beautiful mediator between the form (God’s manifestation in a human form) and the formless (Brahm, the unmanifested divine). It acts as an insightful interpreter, revealing the essence of both the tangible form and the infinite formless.
नाम और रूप की गति की कहानी (विशेषता की कथा) अकथनीय है। वह समझने में सुखदायक है, परन्तु उसका वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता। निर्गुण और सगुण के बीच में नाम सुंदर साक्षी है और दोनों का यथार्थ ज्ञान कराने वाला चतुर दुभाषिया है॥4॥
* राम नाम मनिदीप धरु जीह देहरीं द्वार।
तुलसी भीतर बाहेरहुँ जौं चाहसि उजिआर॥21॥
If the body is likened to a house, the mouth to its gate, and the tongue to its entrance, Tulsidas ji advises placing a radiant lamp made of precious gems at this threshold, the gem being the name of Lord Ram. This divine lamp, glowing with its own brilliance, illuminates both the inner self and the outer world, filling one with boundless spiritual bliss and enlightenment.
तुलसीदासजी कहते हैं, यदि तू भीतर और बाहर दोनों ओर उजाला चाहता है, तो मुख रूपी द्वार की जीभ रूपी देहली पर रामनाम रूपी मणि-दीपक को रख॥21॥
